Attention did not fade after Hosu. It changed direction. That was worse. At first, Ren had thought visibility behaved like a crowd. Loud, immediate, hungry, but eventually distracted by something brighter. The Sports Festival had taught him that being seen could become a cage with better lighting. Stain had taught him something else. Attention could survive without looking directly.
It could move through quotes, comparisons, clips, references, careless headlines, ethical debates, villain manifestos, agency memos, teacher warnings, class discussions, and whispered phrases near vending machines. It could turn a person into a symbol without ever asking the person to stand still. By Monday, the phrase had mutated again. Not Stain's full sentence. People rarely kept full sentences when fragments were easier to weaponize. The fallen over victory.
Ren saw it first on a printed media analysis sheet Kurose placed face down on her desk. Not because he had searched. Because the sheet existed in the room and his eyes had learned to read danger through paper grain. Kurose turned it over only after he gave consent. The article did not name him directly. That made it worse. A STUDENT WHO CHOSE THE FALLEN OVER VICTORY: WHAT HOSU REVEALS ABOUT TRUE HEROISM Under the title, the writer had blended Stain's words, Sports Festival footage, commentary about U. A.'
s transfer structures, and a photograph of Ren being carried from the arena after his match with Todoroki. His face was half-obscured. His body was not. The angle caught his limp arm, the medical team, the white of the sleeve where the scar-lines had been hidden too late, and Todoroki standing in the distance as if the entire scene had been staged by someone who thought tragedy needed composition. Ren stared at the photograph. No scar heat. No thread. Anger, yes. Disgust.
A strange embarrassment, as if the public had walked into a room where his body had been undressed for treatment and decided the shape of his injuries meant philosophy. Kurose sat across from him.
"Status""Yellow-red. No heat. Anger. Shame. Objectification. No activation""Good report" He looked at the headline again.
"Do not call the article good""I did not" Small mercy. He read the first paragraph. Then stopped. The writer called his match a living rebuke to spectacle-based hero selection. That was almost a good criticism. Almost. Then the writer called his collapse the kind of authentic sacrifice modern hero society had forgotten how to honor. Ren pushed the paper away.
"Stop" Kurose turned the page face down immediately. Recovery Girl, standing near the wall with the air of someone waiting for permission to destroy journalism as a profession, made a sharp sound. Nezu watched from the monitor. His expression was not playful today. Ren placed both hands flat on the desk.
"I did not consent to my medical extraction becoming rhetoric" Kurose wrote.
"No" Nezu folded his paws.
"We are issuing a privacy objection through official channels. Because the photograph was captured from a public broadcast, legal removal is uncertain. We can restrict reproduction by school-affiliated outlets and deny commentary" Ren laughed once. Dry.
"Public broadcast means public body" Recovery Girl said "No. It means legally complicated violation" That helped. Not enough. Still. Kurose leaned forward.
"This is why we review exposure instead of pretending it does not exist. Do you want to continue the media review?"
"No""Good" She put the article into a folder.
"Then we move to action" Ren looked up.
"What action?"
"Refusal statement practice. Not for publication. For internal stability" Recovery Girl pulled a chair out and sat. That meant longer session. Ren disliked correct predictions. Kurose placed a blank page before him.
"Write three sentences. First, what they are saying. Second, what is true inside it. Third, what they are doing wrong" Ren picked up the pen. This was emotional paperwork wearing media literacy's coat. He wrote: They are saying my choice proves true heroism because I chose a fallen person over victory. He stopped. What was true? He hated that there was an answer. He wrote: It is true that choosing a person over victory mattered. Third. He pressed the pen harder.
They are wrong because they turn the cost into the point and make my body the evidence. Kurose read the page. Recovery Girl read over her shoulder. Nezu said "Good distinction" Ren closed his eyes.
"I hate all three sentences""That does not make them less useful" Kurose said"Unfortunately" Recovery Girl tapped the third line.
"This is the one you keep" Ren looked at it. They make my body the evidence. The sentence had weight. He added beneath it: I am the witness, not the exhibit. Kurose's pen paused. Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed in approval she would deny later. Nezu's ears lifted slightly. Ren stared at the line. A witness could speak. An exhibit was used. He did not know if he believed the distinction fully. That was why it mattered. The school adjusted again. More restrictions. Not dramatic ones. Ren's routes changed subtly.
Kurose walked him past fewer public windows. Aizawa's Hero Course mixed sessions moved deeper into Gym Gamma. Recovery Girl added a new category to his chart: exposure trigger. Nezu sent a privacy reminder to staff that used no names and somehow made every teacher sit straighter. Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings. Class 1-C noticed. Of course they did. Sano noticed first because his attention was chaotic but not shallow.
During lunch, he placed a green card beside Ren's tray. Ren looked at it. The card read: SIGNAL: MEDIA WEATHER BAD. FOOD FIRST. Ren stared. Sano sat across from him, trying to look casual and achieving the exact opposite.
"I developed nonverbal logistics" Shinso picked up the card.
"This is ridiculous" Arai leaned over.
"The color contrast is poor but the structure is useful" Sano deflated.
"I will accept half praise" Kenta placed his water bottle beside Ren's food.
"No dehydration" Ren looked at all of them. This was becoming a system. A strange, embarrassing, useful system.
"I am not a public safety zone" Shinso said "You are currently under small-scale logistics support""That sounds worse""Accurate terms often do" Arai said "You can refuse" Ren looked at the green card again. Could he? Yes. Would refusing make him feel less like an exhibit? Maybe. Would accepting make lunch easier? Also yes. He picked up his chopsticks.
"I accept this instance" Sano pumped one fist once, silently. Kurose, passing behind them, looked at the card and then at Sano.
"Submit the format after lunch" Sano's face went pale.
"For evaluation?"
"Yes" He whispered "My bits keep becoming homework" Kenta said "Growth" Sano looked betrayed.
"The word did not even appear and I felt it" Ren almost smiled. Safe. Almost. Mixed training resumed that afternoon with smaller teams and stricter exposure controls. No media. No observation beyond cleared staff. No public-facing footage. No hero name discussions. No Stain references unless staff initiated the topic. That last rule lasted twelve minutes. Not because anyone said Stain. Because Bakugo said "fallen over victory" with enough contempt to make the room stop.
He said it during a scenario reset, after Ren called a halt because a mock rescue path placed the dummy under a hazard angle too similar to the Sports Festival footage. Ren had reported mild scar heat and asked for a thirty-second reset. Recovery Girl approved. Aizawa paused the timer. Kurose wrote. Bakugo, apparently allergic to waiting, snapped "So now every damn hazard waits because the fallen over victory kid needs a reset?" The silence was immediate. Kirishima froze. Midoriya went white.
Uraraka looked horrified. Todoroki's left side warmed enough to shimmer the air. Shinso's face went empty. Ren did not move. No heat spike. Strange. His body had heard worse. Or maybe the sentence was so wrong it struck the mind first. Aizawa's scarf shifted.
"Bakugo" Bakugo's jaw tightened. He had heard himself after saying it. Good. Too late. Kurose stepped forward.
"No. Akiyama answers first if he chooses" Everyone looked at her. Ren did too. She held his gaze. Choice. Not performance. Not forced courage. Ren breathed. In. Hold. Out.
"Status" Recovery Girl's voice came from the medical station.
"Yours first" Ren answered.
"Yellow-red. Anger. No heat. No activation. Able to speak" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Proceed if chosen" Ren looked at Bakugo. Bakugo stared back, shoulders tense, hands at his sides, explosions not sparking. That mattered. Not enough. Ren said "That phrase is not yours to use" Bakugo's eyes narrowed. Ren continued "It is not mine either. It is Stain's framing attached to my body. If you use it to mock caution, you are helping him make the frame useful" Bakugo's face darkened.
"I am not helping that bastard""Then do not borrow his language because you are impatient" The room held its breath. Bakugo took one step forward. Kirishima shifted. Aizawa did not move yet. Bakugo stopped himself. Good. Infuriatingly good. His hands clenched. Then opened. He looked away first.
"Tch. Fine" Kurose said "Not enough" Bakugo's head snapped back.
"What?" Aizawa's voice was low.
"She said not enough" Bakugo looked furious enough to bite a wall. Then his eyes cut to Ren again.
"I used a murderer's words because I was pissed off" The room remained silent. Bakugo forced the next part through his teeth.
"That was bad field language" Ren looked at him. Bakugo's jaw worked.
"And I will not use it again" Recovery Girl said "Better" Bakugo looked like he might explode from being morally corrected by medical staff. Ren nodded once.
"Accepted for this instance" Bakugo glared.
"This instance?"
"Yes" Kirishima whispered "That is fair man" Bakugo rounded on him.
"Shut up" But the heat had left. Mostly. Kurose wrote on the board. FIELD LANGUAGE CAN CARRY ENEMY STRUCTURE Aizawa looked at the line and then at Bakugo.
"Everyone copies that after training" Bakugo muttered something that was probably not printable. Kurose said "Louder if you want extra reflection" He shut up. Progress. Painful. The reset continued. Ren completed the scenario behind the safe line. Bakugo used quieter blasts. Midoriya overcompensated by not speaking until Aizawa told him silence was not consent-based strategy if the team needed information. Todoroki used one narrow line of ice and no dramatic wall. Shinso moved before the target spoke.
Uraraka corrected a lift angle. Yaoyorozu compressed a three-step plan into one sentence and looked startled by her own success. Training ended with everyone angry and improved. Aizawa called that acceptable. Kurose called it expected. Recovery Girl called it not yet a medical disaster. This counted as success at U. A. That evening, Ren had a secure fragment review. He had not had a new fragment. That did not matter. The review was about threat association. Nezu appeared on screen. Kurose sat beside Ren.
Recovery Girl watched the monitor. All Might was present as Toshinori this time because the room was secure and the topic involved the Symbol's shadow more than his smile. The folder on the table was labeled PUBLIC VISIBILITY RISK. Inside were printed excerpts. Stain forums. Hero society debate transcripts. Scar Hero references. Clips of Ren's match. Edited images of his fall beside Stain's quote.
One forum thread had circled his scarred hand in a zoomed image from the Sports Festival and written: EVOLUTION UNDER PRESSURE? Ren's stomach turned. Recovery Girl removed the page before he finished reading.
"Too much" Ren nodded.
"Status""Yellow-red. Nausea. No heat. Lab association possible. No clear image" Nezu sharpened.
"Lab association?" Ren closed his eyes. A file. A gloved hand. A screen. Not Stain. Not public. Something colder.
"Partial. Not actionable. Public image being analyzed by someone with medical or experimental interest. Could be fear-based inference. No name. No location" Kurose wrote. Toshinori's face changed. He knew enough to fear laboratories in ways he rarely said aloud. Nezu's voice remained calm.
"Noted as low-confidence threat association" Ren opened his eyes.
"Low confidence does not mean false""No" Nezu said "It means we do not let fear write policy alone" Recovery Girl said "But we do not ignore it either" Kurose added "Protections continue" Ren looked at the folder.
"Am I making myself more dangerous by being visible?" No one answered quickly. Good. Toshinori spoke first.
"You are not making yourself dangerous. Attention from unsafe people is not your fault" Ren looked at him.
"That was not my question" Toshinori's mouth tightened.
"No. Visibility can increase risk. That does not make the visible person responsible for the watcher" Ren absorbed that. Slowly. Nezu said "There are two practical responses. Reduce unnecessary exposure. Increase controlled development. We do both" Kurose placed another page on the table. CONTROLLED DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES Scar Tension release control. Hazard communication compression. Psychological exposure boundaries. Mixed team role clarity. Emergency protocol compliance under trigger. Public language refusal.
Ren read the list. Not glamorous. Good. Maybe. Recovery Girl said "Notice what is not on there" Ren looked again. No pain tolerance. No durability training. No extreme environment. No forced activation. No field deployment.
"No using my body as proof""Correct" Toshinori looked at him.
"Also no disappearing to avoid being seen" Ren looked up. That one hit differently. Toshinori continued "Hiding completely can become another way to let unsafe attention define your life" Kurose did not object. So it was true enough to be annoying. Ren said "Visible under control" Nezu smiled faintly.
"Precisely" Ren wrote it down. Visible under control. It sounded impossible. A lot of useful things did at first. The villain watched the same footage without disgust. That was the difference. In a room where the light came mostly from screens, Garaki replayed the Sports Festival clip again. Not the full match. Not the rescue. Not the crowd. Only the moment the boy's palm caught on ice. The hand should have slipped. It did not. The image zoomed. Grainy. Public footage. Poor angle. Compression artifacts.
Useless for formal analysis by any decent standard. Fascinating anyway. Garaki smiled.
"Look at the ridging" All For One sat in shadow, one hand resting over the other. The sound of Stain's circulating manifesto played on a muted secondary screen. A child who chose the fallen over victory. Public fascination had done what infiltration had not yet needed to do. It had gathered angles. Clips. Commentary. Amateur enhancement. Speculation. Every idiot with an editing program had become a small unwilling assistant. Garaki did not respect the public. He did appreciate their volume.
"Not painproof" Garaki murmured "Not regeneration. Not conventional adhesion either. Temporary tissue behavior, perhaps triggered by stress and prior damage mapping. Beautifully inefficient. Living systems are so wasteful when they are interesting" All For One's voice was calm.
"You are fond of the boy" Garaki chuckled.
"Fond? No. Curious. Fondness is imprecise""Curiosity can also become imprecise" Garaki paused the clip. The boy's hand, half-visible, braced against ice.
"Stain helped""Inadvertently""Most useful people do" All For One seemed amused. Garaki opened another file. AKIYAMA_REN_STRUCTURAL_RESPONSE_02 PUBLIC FOOTAGE UPDATE POST-HOSU VISIBILITY He added tags. SCAR ANCHORING? STRESS-INDUCED CONNECTIVE RESPONSE NO HEALING OBSERVED PUBLIC PRIVACY CONTAINMENT BY U. A. HIGH SUPERVISION PSYCHOLOGICAL ANCHORS STRONG He disliked the last one. Strong anchors made extraction messy. Messy did not mean impossible. It meant timing mattered.
"U. A. is protecting him better now" Garaki said All For One leaned back.
"Nezu learns quickly""And the medical woman bites""Recovery Girl has always disliked waste" Garaki smiled wider.
"How rude of her" On another screen, the boy's public image stood beside words he had not chosen. Scar Hero. Fallen over victory. True hero. Painproof. Victim. Candidate. Garaki studied the terms.
"Public language is unstable around him""Useful?"
"Potentially. But not for persuasion yet. Too many family and school anchors. He is not isolated" All For One's fingers moved once.
"The boy who wanted to be seen is learning to choose who may look" Garaki turned.
"You say that as if it is not a complication""It is a refinement" Garaki considered. On the secondary screen, another clip played. Not Ren. Hosu. Stain collapsing. Endeavor in flame. Students blurred out by news filters. Public narrative moving faster than truth. All For One listened to the muted world for a moment.
"Let society argue about purity. Let U. A. argue about consent. Let the children learn boundaries" Garaki waited. The shadow smiled without needing to show it.
"Boundaries are most informative when pressure tests them" Garaki's fingers hovered over the file.
"Not yet?"
"Not yet" The disappointment was mild. Scientific patience wore many masks. Garaki added one final note. MONITOR DURING NEXT LARGE-SCALE STUDENT EVENT. Public eyes liked student events. So did other eyes. At U. A., Ren sneezed during dinner. Hana looked up immediately.
"Status" Ren stared.
"I sneezed""Status""Green. Nasal irritation. No existential implication" Daichi lowered his chopsticks.
"That we know of" Shinso, across the table because the dinner pattern had stopped pretending, nodded solemnly.
"Could be ideology exposure" Ren closed his eyes.
"You are all impossible" Hana placed another serving in his bowl.
"Eat before diagnosing us" Ren ate. The day had been too long. Bakugo's borrowed phrase. Media rhetoric. Garaki's unseen attention, though Ren did not know the name of the feeling. Secure review. Mixed training. Visible under control. A family table that treated soup as counterintelligence. After dinner, Ren opened his notebook under normal conditions. He wrote: They make my body the evidence. Then: I am the witness, not the exhibit. He paused. The second sentence felt important. Not complete. Important.
He added: A witness can speak. An exhibit is used. Then, after thinking of Bakugo, he wrote: Do not borrow enemy language because it is convenient. After thinking of the media, he wrote: A true criticism can still become a false altar. After thinking of the cold threat association that smelled like files and screens, he wrote: Being watched is not my fault. It is still my problem. That last line sat on the page like a stone. He did not like it. He did not cross it out.
Shinso, doing homework at the other end of the table, looked up.
"Bad line?" Ren turned the notebook. Shinso read. His face changed. Then he said "Accurate. Ugly. Needs second line" Ren waited. Shinso tapped the page beside it.
"Being watched is not consent" Ren breathed. Then wrote it down. Being watched is not consent. Hana read over his shoulder on her way past with plates.
"Good" Ren and Shinso both groaned. Daichi looked proud.
"The word remains load-bearing" Ren almost smiled. Almost. Later, after Shinso left with Bentaro and a container of leftovers he claimed he had been forced to accept despite overwhelming evidence of voluntary hand position, Ren placed the notebook beside the Anchor card. Outside, attention moved. Through screens. Through forums. Through agencies. Through classrooms. Through places Ren could not see. Some of it was harmless. Some of it wanted to use him.
Some of it wanted to believe in him badly enough to misunderstand him. Some of it was colder than belief. Ren could not stop every gaze. He could choose what he gave it. Not everything. Not his body as evidence. Not his pain as proof. Not his name as an altar. He turned off the light. In the dark, the scars under his sleeve stayed cool. For tonight, that was enough. Somewhere far away, on a screen he would never consent to, his hand caught on ice again and again.
Somewhere closer, in a notebook he owned, the answer waited. Being watched is not consent.
