Chương 56: The Wrong Witness

Ren woke with the name still broken. Not spoken. Not whole. Not enough to become evidence. Just a sound caught between heat and smoke. To— Then nothing. He opened his eyes before the alarm and stared at the ceiling while the room around him slowly assembled itself into safe objects. Window. Desk. Chair. Bag. Notebook zipped shut. Food schedule taped near the door by Hana because she had decided walls were underused as medical infrastructure. His left forearm was cool under the sleeve. No scar heat.
No thread beneath the skin. No lattice. No emergency. Only the afterimage of blue fire against snow, and the sensation that somewhere inside someone else's history, a child had wanted to be seen so badly that the wanting had become flammable. Ren breathed. In. Hold. Out. Status. Yellow. Stable. Residual fragment echo. No physical activation. Shame present. The last category was not official. It should have been. He sat up slowly, checked ribs, shoulder, wrist, and fingers, then reached for the notebook. Stopped.
No solitary notebook work after classified fragment. Kurose's rule. Recovery Girl's threat. Hana's underlined copy. Ren's own consent. He did not open the notebook. That was not strength. That was obedience to a structure designed for the version of him that would call compulsion discipline. He stood instead and went to the kitchen. Hana was already awake. Of course she was.
She stood at the stove with her hair tied back and a cup of tea near her elbow, turning breakfast with the calm precision of someone who had not slept enough and had chosen not to make that anyone else's problem yet. She looked at him once.
"Status?" Ren sat at the table.
"Yellow. Stable. Residual echo. No heat. No notebook" Hana's shoulders lowered by a fraction.
"Good" The word was warm here. That made it harder. Daichi entered from the hallway with two mismatched socks and the expression of a man who had lost a negotiation with morning. He looked at Ren.
"No notebook?"
"No notebook" Daichi nodded solemnly.
"Historic day" Hana placed breakfast in front of Ren.
"Eat before becoming morally burdened" Ren looked at the plate.
"I think the burden is already present""Then it can wait in line behind rice" Daichi sat across from him.
"A very competitive line" Ren took the chopsticks. The food helped. Not because it solved anything. Because bodies liked being reminded that they were more than containers for impossible knowledge. Hana did not ask what he had seen. Daichi did not ask either. Their restraint had become a shape in the apartment, present and heavy and kinder than questions would have been. After breakfast, Hana placed a sealed envelope beside Ren's school bag.
"Parent welfare note. For Kurose. We are not asking content. We are confirming home stability and requesting aftercare continuation" Ren looked at it.
"Thank you" Hana touched his hair once. Quickly. Not enough to trap him under comfort.
"Accepted" Daichi lifted the repaired umbrella from the chair near the door.
"Bentaro has survived field testing" Ren closed his eyes.
"Not today" Daichi looked at Hana.
"He is rejecting umbrella morale" Hana picked up her tea.
"He is allowed. Once" Ren took his bag and the envelope. At the door, Hana said "Ren" He turned. She held his gaze.
"Not telling is not the same as lying when the truth is not yours" The sentence entered without permission. Ren swallowed.
"I know""Do you?"
"Mostly" Hana nodded.
"Good enough for morning" U. A. looked too normal under the pale sky. Students walked through the gates discussing homework, training schedules, agency rumors, festival clips, and the strange fact that classes continued after being seen by the whole country. Someone from Support Course ran past carrying a box of cables and yelling that screws were a temporary social construct. Two first-years from Business Course argued about branding ethics with enough enthusiasm to suggest neither had yet met Kurose.
Ren reached Class 1-C early. Shinso was already there. That was new. He sat at his desk with his notebook open, a folded paper corner visible from one page. The borrowed umbrella rested beside his bag, dry and returned but not abandoned. He looked up when Ren entered.
"Classified hangover?" Ren paused at the door.
"Accurate" Shinso nodded once.
"Stable?"
"Yes""Need anything?" Ren looked at him. Shinso's face tightened.
"Not content. I mean water, silence, someone to glare at Sano preemptively" Ren breathed. The relief hurt.
"Silence first. Glaring later""Done" Ren sat. For several minutes, they did not speak. That did more than a conversation would have. Sano entered eventually, saw both of them silent, opened his mouth, visibly reconsidered his entire life, and walked to his seat without comment. Arai whispered "Good decision" Sano whispered back "I am evolving under hostile conditions" Kenta said "Quietly" Class began with Kurose collecting Hana's envelope before saying a word.
She read it at her desk while the room worked through morning assignments. Her expression did not change, but her pen moved twice on a sticky note. After ten minutes, she placed a small card on Ren's desk. SECURE REVIEW — SECOND PERIOD K / RG / N / AM YOU MAY DECLINE Ren read the initials. Kurose. Recovery Girl. Nezu. All Might. His fingers tightened on the card. All Might would receive the full content now. Because he was one of the four. Because the user of the Symbol understood Endeavor in ways Ren did not.
Because secrets held by too few adults became weight without structure. Because Ren had consented after debrief, but consent could still hurt when it became real. Shinso glanced at the card. He saw only initials. His eyes stopped on AM for half a second. Then he looked away. Not asking. Again. Ren wrote on the corner of his notes: Respect can become pressure if I reward it by over-sharing. Then he underlined it once. Kurose caught his eye from the front. Good. He hated how many people could read him now.
Reading on this site? This novel is published elsewhere. Support the author by seeking out the original. He also did not. Second period did not happen for Ren. Instead, Kurose walked him to secure medical room two. Recovery Girl was already there with tea she would deny was tea because admitting to hospitality might weaken her brand. Nezu watched from the monitor. All Might entered through the private door as the Symbol, then released the form only after the room was confirmed secure.
Toshinori sat with his coat wrapped around his thin shoulders, face tired and unguarded in the way only rooms with locks could allow. Ren's monitor rose. Recovery Girl glared at it until the numbers remembered manners. Toshinori looked at Ren.
"I received the restricted summary" Ren sat across from him.
"Not full content yet""No" Nezu folded his paws.
"Akiyama has consented to full classified disclosure to this group. This disclosure does not authorize independent action, confrontation, or sharing with uninformed parties" Toshinori's expression tightened.
"Understood" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"Say it more specifically" Toshinori bowed his head slightly.
"I will not confront Endeavor with this information. I will not disclose it to Young Todoroki. I will not use it to advise Midoriya or any student. I will treat it as classified protocol information and contaminated evidence" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Toshinori winced faintly.
"The word has become judgment" Ren said "Yes" Nezu looked pleased.
"Begin" Kurose read the fragment report aloud. Not theatrically. Not emotionally. As evidence. Trigger phrase: controlled furnace strengthens metal. Heat training environment. Child. Red hair. Excessive output expectation. Desire to be watched. Snow environment. Blue-white flame. Same child or associated child, older or distorted. Body overwhelmed. No confirmed death image. Partial name: To—. Broken before completion. Not sufficient to confirm identity. Smaller child watching. Likely Shoto Todoroki by context.
Witness position. Woman's hands around kettle. Steam. Fear. Household trauma association. Interpretation marked as interpretation: Endeavor may have applied pressure-as-training to another child before Shoto. Possible older sibling. Possible fire overuse or mismatch. Possible incident in cold environment. No current villain association confirmed. No disclosure to Todoroki recommended absent safety threshold. The room went silent. Toshinori looked as if the report had struck him somewhere the Symbol had no armor.
His hands closed slowly on the edge of his coat. Recovery Girl watched him like she was prepared to treat or attack depending on what he did next. Kurose waited. Nezu did not speak. Ren kept his eyes on the table. He did not want to watch All Might learn the shape of another hero's household wound. Finally, Toshinori said "I knew Endeavor was harsh with his family" His voice was low.
"I knew too little and did less" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"Do not make this confession large enough to become performance" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"Yes" Ren looked up. Toshinori opened his eyes again.
"I will not pretend I knew this. I did not. I will not pretend I am shocked that pressure was involved. I am not. That is worse" Kurose wrote. Nezu asked "Does this alter any current safety assessment?" Toshinori breathed.
"Yes. Endeavor contact with Akiyama should remain restricted. Todoroki should not be placed in any context where Endeavor can use Akiyama as comparison pressure. Midoriya should not be encouraged to speak to Todoroki about family beyond what Todoroki consents to discuss. Any future internship guidance involving Endeavor Agency needs enhanced welfare screening" Kurose's pen moved quickly. Ren listened. Concrete. Not dramatic. Good. Toshinori continued "And I should be careful" Nezu tilted his head.
"How?" Toshinori looked at Ren.
"I have a habit of believing that if a wound produced a hero, the wound has been answered" Ren went still. Toshinori's mouth tightened.
"That is not true. Young Todoroki using fire does not answer what made him refuse it. Akiyama surviving pressure does not answer what pressure did to him. Young Midoriya breaking fewer bones does not answer why he keeps reaching for damage when words fail" The room held that. Recovery Girl looked almost satisfied. Almost. Ren said "Safer words" Toshinori nodded.
"Safer thoughts too, I hope" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Your response?" Ren did not immediately understand. Then he did. This was not only a briefing. It was also aftercare. He had shared the fragment. Now he had to identify what the sharing had done. He said "Relief that more adults know. Fear that knowing makes action tempting. Shame that I want someone else to carry it. Anger that the child in the fragment wanted to be seen and I understand too easily" Toshinori's expression changed. Recovery Girl said quietly "Good report" Ren's jaw tightened.
Toshinori leaned forward. Not too much.
"You are not that child" Ren looked at him.
"No" Toshinori continued.
"But you recognized the question" Ren's throat hurt.
"Yes""What was the question?" Ren looked down at his right hand. No thread. No tension. No rescue.
"If I burn brightly enough, will you finally look?" No one moved. Toshinori's face closed around pain. Kurose wrote nothing for several seconds. Recovery Girl looked at the table. Nezu's ears lowered. Ren breathed.
"That is interpretation" Kurose's voice was softer than usual.
"Marked" Toshinori whispered "It is also a warning""Yes" Recovery Girl straightened.
"Then here is the rule. You do not answer that question with your body" Ren looked at her. She continued.
"Not for U. A. Not for Endeavor. Not for All Might. Not for your classmates. Not for people trapped under rubble. Not for applause. Not for ghosts you saw in someone else's fire" Ren could not speak. So he nodded. Kurose said "Second rule. We do not tell Todoroki to reduce your burden" Ren nodded again. Nezu said "Third rule. We reassess if the information becomes safety-actionable" Ren found his voice.
"Define safety-actionable" Kurose answered.
"Immediate risk to Todoroki, another student, Endeavor's household, public safety, or villain threat confirmed by independent evidence. Emotional relevance is not enough. Curiosity is not enough. Your discomfort is not enough" That last sentence cut. Good. Terrible. Necessary. Ren said "He has a right to his own history" Toshinori answered this time.
"Yes. But not every path to that history is just because it ends at truth" Ren looked at him. Toshinori continued.
"If someone had told Young Midoriya certain truths about my power without my consent or his preparation, it might have been true and still harmful. Timing matters. Source matters. Readiness matters. Motive matters" Ren nodded slowly. Aizawa would probably say the same with fewer words and more threat. Kurose said "Fourth rule. Akiyama does not become Todoroki's secret witness" Ren looked at her. She held his gaze.
"You saw something. That does not make you responsible for completing his family's story" Ren whispered "It feels like responsibility""Of course it does" That helped. Because she did not say it was not. She said the feeling made sense and still did not get to drive. The secure review ended with more documentation. Everything did. All Might received a sealed restricted summary. Nezu updated the classification.
Kurose added a welfare warning: avoid placing Akiyama in unresolved Todoroki-family discussions without preparation. Recovery Girl added a medical note: heat-associated fragment triggers can produce scar heat without Quirk activation and should not be dismissed as emotional only. Ren received a smaller note. Not content. Rules. No disclosure to Todoroki without protocol review. No direct Endeavor contact without new consent. No solitary fragment analysis for forty-eight hours. Report heat responses immediately.
Food before notebook. Recovery Girl had written the last one. Of course. When Ren returned to Class 1-C, Shinso looked up. Ren placed the folded rules sheet inside his folder. Shinso's eyes tracked it. Then he looked at Ren's face.
"More people know?" Ren sat.
"Authorized people""All Might?"
"Yes" Shinso's jaw moved once.
"Good" Ren looked at him.
"Is it?" Shinso leaned back.
"If the Symbol gets to be part of the problem, he can be part of the paperwork" Ren almost smiled.
"That is almost profound""Do not accuse me of growth before lunch" Kurose began the next lesson before Ren could answer. The morning continued. That was rude. Important things happened, and then grammar still existed. Equations still existed. Hero law still existed. Sano still managed to ask whether emotional support pigeons required liability forms, and Kurose still managed to answer seriously enough to ruin the joke and improve it. Ren took notes. He ate lunch. He did not open his notebook for fragment analysis.
He did not look for Todoroki. Which meant he saw Todoroki everywhere. At the cafeteria entrance, speaking quietly with Iida. Near the vending machines, holding a drink he did not seem to want. Across the courtyard after lunch, standing under a tree with one hand in his pocket and the other relaxed at his side, left side turned toward the sun as if warmth had become a language he was trying not to reject. Ren looked away each time. Not because Todoroki was dangerous. Because Ren was the wrong witness.
The problem with not looking was that Todoroki had been trained by a life of being watched for output. He noticed absence. After final class, Ren found him waiting near the side corridor outside the medical wing. Not blocking the path. Not demanding. Just there. Shinso, walking beside Ren, stopped. His posture changed immediately. Todoroki looked at Shinso. Then at Ren.
"Akiyama""Todoroki" Shinso's voice was flat.
"This scheduled?" Todoroki shook his head.
"No" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren thought of the rules. No disclosure. No direct unresolved family discussion without preparation. This was not prepared. But avoiding Todoroki entirely had become its own message. Ren said "Five minutes. Public corridor. No content" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Need me?" Ren wanted to say yes. Not because Shinso needed to know. Because having someone beside him would make the burden less sharp. That was not a good enough reason.
"No. Thank you" Shinso's face flickered. Then he nodded.
"I will be there" He pointed down the hall at a bench twenty meters away.
"Not listening?"
"Not unless you start looking stupid" Ren almost smiled.
"Accepted" Shinso walked to the bench and sat with the posture of someone absolutely not guarding anything. Todoroki watched the exchange.
"You trust him" Ren looked at him.
"Yes""But he does not know""Correct" Todoroki's expression shifted. That answered a question Ren had not heard. Todoroki looked toward the medical wing door.
"My father met you""Yes""He said something""Yes""Did he hurt you?" Ren considered.
"Not physically. Not by action" Todoroki's eyes lowered.
"By words""Yes" Todoroki's left hand flexed once.
"I warned him""I know""It mattered" Todoroki looked up.
"Did it?"
"Yes. It changed the door he used""Not what he wanted""No" Todoroki absorbed that. Good. Or not good. But true. His gaze sharpened.
"There is more" Ren did not answer. Todoroki's voice cooled.
"About him?" Ren said carefully "Classified" Todoroki went still. The word changed the hallway. Classified could mean villains. Security. Fragments. Quirk. Family. Anything. Too much. Todoroki's eyes narrowed.
"About me?" Ren's chest tightened. Protocol did not provide enough air.
"Adjacent" The word hurt him to say. Todoroki's face hardened.
"If it concerns my family" Ren cut in, quiet but firm.
"That is why I cannot use it" Todoroki stopped. The anger did not vanish. It reorganized. Ren continued.
"I am not withholding to control you""How would I know?" The question was fair. Terrible. Fair. Ren looked at him.
"You may not. Not today" Todoroki's jaw tightened. Shinso shifted on the bench down the hall, but did not stand. Ren continued.
"Your father looks at things and tries to make them serve a goal" Todoroki's eyes sharpened.
"Yes""I am trying not to do that with what I know" Silence. The hallway noise seemed distant. Todoroki looked at Ren as if seeing him through a new pane of glass.
"You know something""Yes""But not enough to act""Not enough to tell. Not safely. Not cleanly. Maybe not accurately" Todoroki's voice dropped.
"And if I ask?"
"Then I say no" The answer hung between them. Todoroki's left side warmed slightly. Not flame. Not visible. Only a shift in air Ren felt because heat had become too loud in his life. Ren kept still. Todoroki said "My father kept many things from me" Ren swallowed.
"I know enough to know secrecy can be harm""Then why should I accept yours?"
"Because I am telling you there is a locked door instead of pretending there is no room" Todoroki looked away. That sentence landed somewhere neither of them could reach. Ren did not move. No rescue. No explanation. No wound pressing. Finally, Todoroki said "Is it dangerous now?" Ren answered from the protocol.
"Not currently safety-actionable""That sounds like Kurose""It is""Good" Ren blinked. Todoroki looked back at him.
"If the words were yours, I would not trust them as much" That was not insult. Probably. Ren accepted it as structure.
"Fair" Todoroki looked toward the bench. Shinso was staring at the ceiling with the exaggerated innocence of someone who could weaponize boredom.
"He knows you are carrying something""Yes""But not what""Yes" Todoroki looked back.
"Does he accept that?"
"Painfully" The corner of Todoroki's mouth moved once, barely. Then vanished.
"My father said Akiyama's evaluation will continue regardless of my discomfort" Ren's hand closed slowly.
"He said something similar in the meeting" Todoroki's eyes hardened.
"Of course" Ren said "U. A. restricted future contact""Good""Your objection helped" Todoroki looked down.
"Not enough""No" The honesty did not break him. It seemed to steady him. Good. Todoroki said "If there is ever something I need to know for safety""You will be told through protocol""Not by you?"
"Maybe not" That hurt him. Ren saw it. Todoroki said "Good" Ren believed he meant it. That made the conversation heavier. Todoroki turned to leave. Then stopped.
"Akiyama""Yes""Do not become another person who knows my family better than I do" The sentence hit harder than any accusation. Ren's mouth went dry.
"I am trying not to" Todoroki nodded. Not forgiveness. Not trust. A boundary accepted without comfort. He left. Shinso waited until Todoroki turned the corner before approaching. Ren did not move. Shinso stopped beside him.
"You look like you swallowed a legal document with bones in it" Ren closed his eyes.
"Accurate""Did you tell him?"
"No""Did he ask?"
"Yes""Did you say no?"
"Yes" Shinso exhaled.
"Good" Ren looked at him.
"You say that a lot now""I am adapting to local vocabulary under protest" Ren almost smiled. Almost. Then the hallway tilted slightly. Not physically. Emotionally. He placed one hand on the wall. Shinso's face changed.
"Status""Yellow. Fatigue spike. No heat. Need sitting" Shinso pointed to the bench.
"Twenty meters. Walk or I get Kurose?"
"Walk" They walked. Slowly. No one called it escorting. Ren sat. Shinso sat beside him, close enough to be present and far enough not to crowd. After a minute, Shinso said "Was it about Todoroki?" Ren looked at the floor.
"Adjacent""Same answer""Only answer" Shinso nodded. Then said "You wanted to tell him""Yes""Because it might help?" Ren remembered the corridor. The anger in Todoroki's eyes. The sentence. Do not become another person who knows my family better than I do.
"No" Shinso glanced at him.
"Then why?"
"Because secrets are easier when someone else bleeds from them too" Shinso went quiet. The sentence disgusted Ren immediately. But it was true. He had wanted the burden to move. Not help. Not only. Move. Shinso leaned back against the bench.
"That was an ugly report""Yes""Probably a useful one""Unfortunately" They sat there until the hallway emptied enough that silence felt less public. Kurose found them without appearing surprised. Of course. She looked at Ren.
"Status""Yellow. Fatigue. No heat. Conversation with Todoroki. No disclosure. He knows there is classified adjacent material. He asked if dangerous. I used safety-actionable language" Kurose absorbed that. Then looked at Shinso.
"You?"
"Bystander. Not listening. Bench support. Hungry because emotional restraint burns calories apparently" Kurose nodded.
"Good reports" Shinso muttered "I walked into plural" Kurose said "Both of you to my office. Food first. Documentation second" Sano would have called that a threat. Ren called it mercy with paperwork. That evening, Ren went home with a new rule added to the sheet. No unsupervised contact with Todoroki regarding classified material. He hated the wording. He agreed with it. Hana read the update and said nothing for almost a full minute. Then she placed dinner on the table. Daichi read it after her.
Bentaro the umbrella leaned by the door, repaired and smug. Shinso did not come for dinner that night. Aizawa training had ended late, and he texted only: Alive. Ate. Fell better. Did not ask. Returning umbrella tomorrow. Ren replied: Good Shinso sent back: Do not Ren almost smiled. Safe. After dinner, Ren finally opened his notebook under approved conditions: living room, parents present, no fragment details, twenty-minute limit. He did not write the child. He did not write the blue fire.
He did not write the partial name. He wrote: The wrong witness is still a witness. Then: Witness is not owner. Then: Locked door. Not empty room. Then, after a long pause: Do not become another person who knows his family better than he does. That sentence stayed on the page longer than the others. Ren underlined nothing. Some lines were already knives. He closed the notebook when the timer rang. For once, he did not negotiate. Hana noticed. Daichi noticed. Neither praised him. That helped. In another part of U. A.
, Todoroki Shoto sat alone with his phone in his hand and did not call his sister. He typed one message. Deleted it. Typed another. Deleted that too. Finally, he wrote: Did Father ever speak to you about professional interest? He stared at it. Too strange. Too sharp. He deleted it. After several minutes, he sent a different message. Are you free this weekend? Fuyumi replied quickly. Yes. Is everything alright? Shoto looked at the question. Everything was not alright. That was too large to send.
So he wrote: I want to ask about home The reply did not come immediately. When it did, it was shorter. Of course. Shoto placed the phone face down and looked at his left hand. Fire moved faintly beneath the skin. His. Not his father's. Not yet entirely his either. Akiyama knew something. Not enough to tell. Enough to refuse. Shoto hated that. He also understood too well why refusal could be the first honest thing someone did with dangerous information.
At home, Ren turned off his light with the broken name still locked behind protocol. To— No further. No owner. No telling. Not yet. Outside, the city held too many windows lit by families with histories no student should have to see by accident. Inside, Ren let the secret remain where it was. Not buried. Contained. For tonight, that was the closest thing to care he could manage.
