The U. A. uniform fit perfectly. That was the problem. Ren Akiyama stood in front of the mirror on the morning of the entrance ceremony and looked at a boy who belonged to the school on paper. Dark blazer. White shirt. Red tie. Polished shoes. Bag prepared the night before. Hair controlled. Posture neutral. Face quiet enough that anyone else might have mistaken it for calm. The uniform did not know which course he had entered. It did not care.
It gave him the same outline as every other first-year student walking toward the same gates under the same spring sky. From a distance, he would look like U. A. had accepted him without qualification. Ren adjusted the tie. Too tight. He loosened it by three millimeters. Better. On his desk, APPLICATIONS lay closed beside RULES and RECOVERY. The General Studies acceptance letter sat inside the front pocket. The Hero Course rejection remained in the same folder because separating them felt dishonest.
The wound and the road belonged on the same page. His left ribs no longer hurt with every breath, but deep twisting still reminded him of Battle Center C. The palm laceration had healed into a thin line across his right hand, pale and slightly raised. The chain abrasion on his forearm had faded. The old burn scar remained the quietest mark and the oldest question. Adaptive Physiology. Unclassified. Not enough. Ren picked up his bag. The apartment smelled of toast, miso, and his mother trying not to cry.
Hana was in the kitchen wearing her work clothes, though she had arranged her schedule so she could accompany him to the gate. She turned when he entered and stopped for half a second. That half second contained too much. Pride. Fear. Grief. The helpless recognition that he had grown into a uniform designed for a future that had already hurt him. She smiled anyway.
"You look good""Uniform standardization helps" Daichi, sitting at the table with a mug of coffee, closed his eyes.
"Ren""What?" Hana gave a wet laugh and covered it by turning back to the stove. Daichi opened his eyes.
"Sometimes people say you look good because they want to tell you they are proud without collapsing emotionally before breakfast" Ren paused.
"Oh" His mother's shoulders shook once. Ren looked down at his tie.
"Thank you" Hana turned and crossed the kitchen, then adjusted the tie he had already adjusted. It became worse. He did not fix it.
"Breakfast" she said They ate quietly. Not because there was nothing to say. Because too many things stood near the table, waiting for someone foolish enough to invite them in. U. A. General Studies. Hero Course. Sports Festival. Izuku. Bakugo. Nezu's projection. Thirty-four rescue points. Seven villain points. Not enough. Ren ate everything on the plate because recovery had become principle and because Hana had measured the portion with the terrifying precision of a woman who had learned to weaponize nutrition.
Daichi watched him for a while. Then said "Do you have your class assignment?"
"Yes""Say it""General Studies. Class 1-C" The letters entered the room and sat there. 1-C. Not 1-A. Not 1-B. A real class. The wrong class. A starting point. Hana reached for her tea. Her hand was steady. Progress. Daichi nodded.
"Class 1-C""Yes""How do you feel?" Ren looked at him.
"That is broad""Intentionally""I feel prepared" Hana's expression changed. Daichi sighed.
"That is not a feeling""It can be""It is a status" Ren considered that.
"Then I feel aware" Hana said softly "Ren" He set his chopsticks down. The room waited. He looked at the U. A. emblem on the documents beside his bag, then at his parents.
"I feel angry" he said Hana's eyes softened. Daichi did not move. Ren continued "I feel embarrassed that I am angry because General Studies is still U. A. I feel guilty that I am embarrassed because you are proud. I feel frustrated because the admissions committee was not stupid. I feel worse because they were probably right about several things. I feel like I entered through a side door while everyone I need to catch is already inside the building" His throat tightened. He stopped.
The silence after honest answers was always more dangerous than the silence before them. Hana moved first. She placed one hand over his.
"Thank you for saying it" Daichi nodded once.
"That was a feeling""That was several""Even better" Ren looked down. His mother squeezed his hand.
"Today does not need to fix all of that""I know""Do you?"
"No" Daichi smiled faintly.
"There he is" The train was full of U. A. students. That was new. Or perhaps it had always been true and Ren had simply not belonged among them before, so his eyes had sorted them into the background with every other impossible thing. Now they stood out. Uniforms. Bags. Support gear cases. Mutations poorly accommodated by standard sleeves. Senior students with easy posture and loud laughter. First-years trying to identify one another without staring.
Ren stood near the door with Hana and Daichi until the train grew too crowded for three people to occupy the same emotional space. Hana sat when a seat opened. Daichi remained standing beside Ren, one hand on the strap, body positioned subtly between him and a group of second-years arguing about lunch. Ren noticed. Daichi noticed him noticing. Neither commented. A first-year girl with short hair and small horns glanced at Ren's uniform, then at his hands, then at his face.
"First year?"
"Yes""Hero?"
"No""Oh" There it was. A complete social event in one syllable. Ren looked at her.
"General Studies" She flushed.
"I didn't mean""Yes""I mean U. A. is U. A., right?" Ren considered several answers. Most were unhelpful.
"Yes" he said She looked relieved. That was kind of him, perhaps. Or efficient. The girl got off two stops later. Daichi watched the doors close.
"You handled that well""I lied""You simplified""Difference?"
"Intent" Ren stored that. At the U. A. station, the crowd became a current. Students flowed toward the campus, carrying conversations, nerves, perfumes, Quirk traces, new shoes, old ambitions, and the invisible social sorting that began before any teacher took attendance. Hero Course students were not officially marked at the gate, but confidence behaved like a uniform too. Some wore it naturally. Some wore it badly. Some had inherited it before understanding its weight.
Ren walked with his parents until the same guardian boundary as the exam day. This time the gate was not a test entrance. It was school. That made it worse. The first time, he had been trying to get in. Now he had to prove that being in meant something. Hana touched his sleeve.
"Message us after orientation""Yes""Eat lunch""Yes""Do not skip lunch to analyze class dynamics" Ren paused. Daichi looked at him.
"You were considering it""No" Hana stared. Ren corrected "Not actively""Lunch" she said"Yes" Daichi placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Wrong door still gets you inside" Ren looked at him. His father's eyes were steady.
"Now learn the building" Ren nodded. Hana hugged him again. Shorter this time. Still tight. Daichi hugged him too, then stepped back before the moment could become too large for public survival. Ren turned. Walked through the gate. This time, the pavement did not feel like an exam. It felt like a promise someone else had edited. U. A. in morning light was almost offensively alive. Students filled the paths between buildings.
Upperclassmen moved with the ease of people who had already survived the first shock of belonging. Teachers crossed courtyards with files, coffee, and expressions that suggested they had seen every possible form of student panic and ranked them by inconvenience. Cherry blossoms moved in the wind along the edge of the walkway, scattering petals across the polished grounds as if the school had budgeted for symbolism. Ren hated how beautiful it was. Beauty made rejection feel theatrical.
He checked the map on his phone. General Studies first-year orientation was in Building C, second floor. Hero Course first-years assembled separately. Of course. The path split near the central courtyard. Signs directed students. Hero Course. General Studies. Support Course. Management. Other specialized departments. The arrows were clean. Polite. Absolute. Ren stopped at the split for less than a second. Not longer. Longer would be visible. A voice called from the Hero Course path.
"Ren!" Izuku Midoriya hurried toward him in the U. A. uniform, tie slightly crooked, hair as impossible as ever, expression bright with nerves and relief and guilt all fighting for control of the same face. He looked healthier than in the infirmary. Mostly. His right hand moved carefully despite no visible cast, fingers flexing as if reminding themselves that they belonged together. His leg seemed functional. Recovery Girl had done her work, but recovery was not erasure. Ren could see caution in his steps. Good.
He hoped it lasted. Behind Izuku, Uraraka waved with both hands. Iida stood beside her, posture straight enough to qualify as architecture. Further down the path, Bakugo walked alone, hands in pockets, refusing to look at anyone while somehow making everyone aware of him. Ren stopped. Izuku arrived slightly out of breath.
"Good morning""Your tie is wrong" Izuku looked down immediately.
"Oh. I tried, but then the train was crowded and my mom cried and I think I fixed it once but then" Ren reached out and straightened it before Izuku's explanation became a structural hazard. Izuku froze. Ren stepped back.
"Better""Thank you""Do not apologize""I wasn't going to""You were preparing" Izuku closed his mouth. Uraraka reached them, smiling.
"Morning, Akiyama""Good morning" Iida chopped one hand through the air.
"Good morning. I am pleased to see you accepted admission""That was the only logical path" Iida frowned.
"Not the only path, surely""The only one consistent with current objectives""That is different""Yes" Iida looked satisfied by the clarification. Uraraka leaned slightly toward Izuku.
"He always talks like that?"
"Yes" Izuku said Ren looked at him. Izuku straightened.
"I mean, not always. Mostly. It's useful" Bakugo passed behind them without slowing.
"Tch. Still standing around with extras" Izuku's shoulders tightened. Less than before. Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. Progress. Ren turned his head.
"Good morning, Bakugo" Bakugo stopped. Slowly. Uraraka's eyes widened. Iida's posture became alarmed. Izuku looked like Ren had just stepped into traffic. Bakugo turned just enough to glare.
"What did you say?"
"Good morning""Don't talk to me like we're friendly""We are not. The phrase does not require friendship" Bakugo's palms sparked once inside his pockets. Several passing students looked over. Ren did not move. Bakugo's eyes dropped briefly to Ren's uniform, then sharpened.
"General Studies, huh?" The words were almost lazy. Almost. Ren felt them land exactly where intended. Izuku took half a step forward. Ren lifted one hand slightly. Stop. Izuku stopped. Good. Bakugo saw that too. His grin cut wider.
"All that planning and you still missed" Ren looked at him. The courtyard continued around them. Students walking. Petals falling. Hero Course path waiting. General Studies arrow pointing elsewhere.
"Yes" Ren said Bakugo blinked. Not much. Enough. Ren continued "I missed" The grin faded by a fraction. No denial meant no easy target. Ren adjusted his bag.
"Which means I have accurate data" Bakugo stared. Then laughed once. Sharp. Disbelieving.
"Crazy bastard""Repetitive assessment" Bakugo stepped closer. Iida opened his mouth. Uraraka whispered "Oh no" Izuku said "Kacchan" Bakugo ignored them.
"You better not think you're catching up from the spectator seats" Ren looked at the General Studies sign. Then back.
"Then don't stand still" For one second, Bakugo's expression went blank. Not calm. Not anger. Interest. That was dangerous. Then a loud voice from the Hero Course direction cut across the courtyard.
"First-year Hero Course students! Move along unless you plan to make lateness your debut!" A tired-looking man in a yellow sleeping bag stood near the entrance to the Hero building. Aizawa Shota. Ren knew him immediately. Not from fragments only. From research. Eraser Head. Underground hero. Quirk erasure through sight. Capture weapon. Low publicity. High capture efficiency. Poor media engagement. Likely homeroom teacher? Possibly. Aizawa's eyes swept the courtyard once. They passed over Bakugo. Izuku. Uraraka.
Iida. Ren. Stopped for half a second too long. Ren felt the attention like a hand checking a pulse. Then Aizawa looked away.
"Now" Bakugo clicked his tongue and turned. Izuku hesitated. Ren said "Go" Izuku's face tightened.
"See you after class?"
"Maybe""Lunch?" Ren remembered Hana's instruction. Lunch. He considered. Different courses. Social signal. Useful. Potentially painful.
"Yes" Izuku's expression brightened. Then became guilty because joy around Ren's rejection still felt dangerous to him. Ren disliked that.
"Do not look like that""Like what?"
"Like you think being happy is an insult" Izuku went still. Uraraka looked between them and softened. Iida nodded solemnly.
"That is a valuable statement" Bakugo shouted from ahead "Deku!" Izuku flinched, then caught himself. Progress. He hurried after the others. Uraraka waved again. Iida bowed. Aizawa watched the Hero Course students disappear into the building and then turned away, looking as if the day had already disappointed him. Ren stood alone at the split. Not alone exactly. Students moved around him constantly. But the people whose names the future had written in fragments went one way. He went another. Building C was quieter.
Not empty. Not lesser in any official sense. U. A. did not design anything carelessly, and the General Studies building had the same clean functionality as the rest of campus. Wide corridors. Smart boards. Emergency markings. Accessibility features. Reinforced windows. Good light. Still, the air was different. Hero Course students carried expectation like heat. General Studies students carried awareness. Awareness of not being Hero Course. Awareness of what others assumed. Awareness of being inside U. A.
and still adjacent to its most famous heart. Some wore resentment openly. Some disguised it as indifference. Some looked relieved not to be in a combat track. Some looked like they had been placed where their parents wanted. Some looked like they were already calculating transfer options. Ren recognized the last group by their eyes. His classroom was marked 1-C. He stopped outside the door. Not long. Long enough to breathe once. Then entered. Class 1-C was already half full.
The room was bright, with large windows overlooking one of the inner courtyards. Desks arranged in standard rows. Screen at the front. Storage along the back. Emergency kit near the door. Two exits. Cameras discreet. Ceiling vents positioned evenly. Acoustic panels along the upper wall. Ren mapped it automatically. Then he mapped the students. Horned girl from the train sat near the window, speaking quietly with a broad-shouldered boy whose hands looked too large for standard gloves.
A student with ink-dark hair and pale eyes read a textbook with visible determination. Two girls in the back compared entrance exam scores from other schools. A boy with silver piercings leaned back in his chair with the elaborate carelessness of someone performing not caring. A round-faced student arranged colored pens by shade. Several seats remained open.
And near the back left, a purple-haired boy sat alone with his feet under the desk, shoulders slightly slouched, eyes half-lidded as if sleep had been stolen from him and he had decided to make that everyone's problem. Hitoshi Shinso. The name arrived without effort. Brainwashing. Villainous Quirk. General Studies. Sports Festival. Transfer attempt. Ren's fingers tightened around his bag strap. A direct fragment. Clearer than most. Shinso looked up. Their eyes met. His were tired. Not weak.
Tired in a way that had hardened instead of softened. He looked Ren over once, noted the still-healing marks, the controlled posture, the pause, the recognition that Ren had failed to hide. Then his mouth curved faintly. Not a smile. A warning with good manners.
"Something on my face?" Several students turned. Ren walked to the desk two rows ahead of him and slightly to the right.
"Yes" Shinso's eyebrows lifted. The room quieted by one degree. Ren placed his bag down.
"Sleep deprivation" For a moment, Shinso stared. Then one corner of his mouth twitched.
"Bold diagnosis""Visible evidence""You a doctor?"
"No""Then your opinion's worth less""Correct" That seemed to annoy and amuse him at once. A boy in the back whispered "That's Shinso. Careful" Shinso's eyes shifted toward the whisper. The boy immediately looked away. Ren noticed. Shinso noticed Ren noticing. The air changed. Not dramatically. Enough. Ren sat. The chair was comfortable enough. U. A. had good chairs. That was inconvenient. It was harder to hate a school with proper lumbar support. Shinso leaned back.
"You know me?"
"No""Then why look like that?" Ren opened his bag and removed a blank notebook.
"For a moment, you matched an expected profile" Shinso's expression cooled.
"Expected profile" Ren realized too late how that sounded. Clinical. Judgmental. Like every adult who saw Shinso's Quirk and filed him under threat before person. He looked at him directly.
"That was poorly phrased" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Try again" Good. Most people accepted bad phrasing if it sounded confident. Shinso did not. Ren said "I had heard there was a student in General Studies with a mind-affecting Quirk and transfer ambitions. I assumed it might be you. I reacted before verifying" The class went quieter. Several students turned fully now. Shinso's face did not change much, but something behind his eyes sharpened.
"And what else did you hear?" Ren heard the trap. Answer casually and become another person reducing him to rumor. Avoid the answer and imply fear. Lie and fail later.
"Brainwashing-type response after verbal engagement. Public perception risk high. Combat application underrated. Ethical complexity exaggerated by people who prefer punching because it looks cleaner" Someone in the room muttered "What the hell" Shinso did not move. His voice dropped.
"You think it's clean?"
"Punching?"
"My Quirk""No" Shinso's eyes hardened. Ren continued "No Quirk is clean. People just forgive damage faster when it is visible" Silence. The sentence sat between them. Then Shinso looked away first. Not submission. Recalculation.
"Still sounds like you researched me""Indirectly""Creepy""Yes" A few students laughed despite themselves. Shinso's gaze returned.
"You always admit things like that?"
"When denial is inefficient""That must make you popular""It does not" This time Shinso almost smiled. Almost. Before he could reply, the classroom door opened. A woman entered carrying a tablet, a stack of files, and the expression of someone who had decided long ago that adolescent insecurity was not a reason to waste daylight. She was tall, with dark hair tied at the nape of her neck, rectangular glasses, and a scar running from one side of her jaw down under the collar of her shirt. Not a decorative scar.
Not neat. Old and serious. The room quieted immediately. Not because she demanded it. Because she brought pressure with her. She wrote her name on the board. Mizuki Kurose. Then turned.
"Good morning, Class 1-C" A scattered response followed.
"Good morning""Morning""Good morning, sensei" She looked unimpressed by all versions.
"I am Kurose. I will be your homeroom teacher. I teach civics, Quirk law fundamentals, and social systems. I also supervise first-year General Studies academic progression, internal transfer applications, and disciplinary referrals" Several students sat straighter at internal transfer. Kurose noticed. Of course.
"Good. That woke some of you up" Her eyes moved across the room.
"You are in U. A. General Studies. Some of you are here because this was your first choice. Some of you are here because your parents liked the name U. A. Some of you are here because your academic scores were excellent and you had better sense than to throw yourselves at combat robots for validation" A few students looked at Ren's bandaged hand. He kept his face still. Kurose continued "Some of you are here because you failed to enter the Hero Course" No one moved. The sentence cut too cleanly.
"You may dislike that word. Failed. Good. Discomfort is not an injury" Ren's attention sharpened. Kurose walked to the front desk and placed the files down.
"If you applied to the Hero Course and were not admitted, you failed that objective. That does not mean you are failures. If you cannot understand the difference, learn quickly or suffer inefficiently" Ren wrote: Kurose — distinguishes objective failure from identity failure. Blunt. Useful. Kurose's eyes flicked to him.
"You. Name" Ren looked up.
"Akiyama Ren""You taking notes on me?"
"Yes" The room froze. Kurose's mouth did not move, but her eyes changed.
"Why?"
"You are establishing class framework. Likely relevant to survival" A pause. Then Kurose said "Acceptable. Do not publish them""I was not planning to""Good. Continue" Ren wrote: Not hostile to observation if functional. Shinso leaned forward slightly behind him.
"Relevant to survival?" he murmured Ren did not turn.
"Yes""Dramatic""Accurate" Kurose tapped the desk once.
"Now that we have confirmed Akiyama is strange, we can proceed" A laugh moved through the room. Not cruel. Not entirely. Ren decided that was acceptable. Kurose activated the screen. A diagram of U. A.'s departments appeared. Hero Course. General Studies. Support Course. Management. Auxiliary programs. Internal events. Transfer pathways.
"The Hero Course is not U. A." That sentence changed the room. Even Ren stopped writing for half a second. Kurose looked at them.
"The Hero Course is one department inside U. A. It receives the most attention because society enjoys spectacle and children enjoy ranking themselves against explosions. But U. A. does not exist only to produce billboard heroes. It produces people who understand how a Quirk society functions, fails, repairs itself, profits from itself, lies to itself, and survives itself" Ren slowly resumed writing. Shinso was very still. Kurose changed the slide.
"General Studies is not a waiting room" A few students looked down.
"It is not a punishment department. It is not a lesser human storage facility. It is not a spectator box for the Hero Course" Ren felt Bakugo's words flash. Spectator seats. Kurose's gaze moved over the class.
"If you treat it that way, you will become exactly what you fear people already think you are" That one landed. Hard. Good. Terrible. Kurose continued "This course has three main purposes. One, rigorous academic preparation for university, public service, professional certification, and specialized industries. Two, civic, legal, and social understanding of Quirk society. Three, for the small number of students pursuing transfer, documented growth under U. A.
standards" The screen changed to Sports Festival footage from previous years. The room inhaled.
"Internal transfer is possible" The word moved like electricity. Possible. Ren hated the word. He leaned toward it anyway.
"Possible does not mean likely" Kurose said There it was.
"Each year, students imagine the Sports Festival as a dramatic moment where talent is revealed and obstacles fall away. Most are wrong. Public pressure does not create ability. It reveals preparation, adaptability, judgment, and sometimes embarrassing self-deception" Ren wrote: Sports Festival not miracle. Measurement under public amplification. Kurose's eyes flicked to him again. Then to Shinso. Then across the class.
"Those seeking transfer will need grades, faculty evaluations, physical readiness, ethical conduct, and performance strong enough to justify displacing or supplementing students already in the Hero Course. You are not competing against an empty chair. You are competing against someone U. A. already chose" The words struck exactly where they should. Ren saw Izuku's face. Bakugo's grin. Uraraka's kindness. Iida's rigid apology. Someone U. A. already chose. Behind him, Shinso's chair creaked softly.
Kurose turned off the screen.
"Now introductions" A collective shift of dread.
"Name. Prior school. Reason you chose or accepted General Studies. No Quirk demonstrations. If your Quirk is relevant and you wish to state it, do so. If not, do not. This is not preschool. I do not need thirty children showing me they can glow, stretch, harden, secrete, or traumatize furniture" Several students laughed. Kurose pointed to the front row. They began. The horned girl from the train was named Arai Natsumi.
She had chosen General Studies because her family ran a civic mediation office and she wanted law. Her Quirk allowed minor horn growth and vibration sensitivity. She did not mention the train exchange. Ren appreciated that. The broad-shouldered boy was Sano Eiji. Former middle-school judo competitor. Quirk: increased hand size and grip strength. General Studies because he had failed a recommendation-track hero program and did not want to discuss it. Kurose accepted that with a nod.
The ink-haired student was Morita Keiko. Chose General Studies first. Wanted Management later but entered General Studies for broader academic ranking strategy. Quirk: ink secretion from fingernails, not relevant. She said all of this like a business plan. The silver-pierced boy was Yabara Sota. Accepted General Studies because his parents made him apply to U. A. He had no transfer intention and wanted everyone to know that. Kurose said "Noted" in a tone suggesting he would suffer anyway. Others followed.
Some proud. Some embarrassed. Some evasive. Some trying too hard. Every answer added weight to the room. General Studies was not one thing. That mattered. Then Shinso's turn came. He stood slowly.
"Hitoshi Shinso. Nabu Middle School. I accepted General Studies because I was not admitted to the Hero Course" His voice stayed flat. A few students looked at him. He did not look back.
"My Quirk is Brainwashing. If someone verbally responds to me, I can take control of their body. There are limits. I am not explaining all of them" The room changed. Predictably. Arai's shoulders tightened. Yabara leaned back. Sano's hand flexed on his desk. Keiko's eyes sharpened with interest rather than fear. Several students looked away immediately, as if eye contact mattered despite Shinso having said verbal response.
Shinso watched it happen with the tired expression of someone seeing an old lesson repeat itself in a new classroom. Kurose did not intervene. Interesting. She let the room expose itself. Shinso's mouth curved faintly.
"Don't worry. I know how this usually goes" He sat. Silence stayed. Ren disliked it. Not because silence was always wrong. Because this silence was an instruction. Do not answer him. Do not engage. Do not risk it. Villain Quirk. Ren stood when his turn came before the silence could settle permanently. Several students looked relieved for the interruption. Cowards, perhaps. No. People responding to fear. Fear could be trained. He faced the class.
"Akiyama Ren. Kiyose Middle School. I applied to the Hero Course first and General Studies second. I accepted General Studies after Hero Course rejection" The word did not kill him. Good.
"My official Quirk classification is complicated. Older records list Quirkless. Recent assessments list unclassified adaptive physiology with no confirmed combat-applicable function" That got attention. Different from Shinso's. Less fear. More confusion. Good. Ren continued "In practical terms, I do not have a reliable active Quirk. I am pursuing transfer" He sat. Kurose looked at him.
"That was concise""Thank you""Not necessarily praise""I know" Behind him, Shinso murmured "Adaptive physiology?" Ren turned slightly.
"Yes""That means what?"
"Currently? Mostly paperwork" This time Shinso did smile. Small. Sharp. A shared understanding of bureaucratic absurdity crossed the space between them. Kurose resumed introductions. The rest blurred slightly because Ren's mind had already begun building class profiles. Transfer competitors. Possible allies. Social risks. Academic threats. Quirk types. Motivations. Fear responses. Resentment levels. When introductions ended, Kurose assigned seats permanently. Ren remained where he had chosen.
Shinso remained behind him. That was either coincidence or teacher strategy. Kurose passed out schedules. Academic block. Civics. Mathematics. Literature. Quirk society law. Ethics and public systems. General physical education. Cross-department lectures. Elective applications. No hero training. The absence had a shape. Ren felt it on the page. No combat. No rescue practicals beyond general safety curriculum. No foundational heroics. No Aizawa. No All Might battle trials. No Quirk apprehension test. No Hero Course.
Kurose gave them five minutes to review schedules. Whispers began immediately.
"No heroics at all?"
"What did you expect?"
"Sports Festival is soon, right?"
"How soon can transfer happen?"
"Do General Studies students even get noticed?"
"Forty kids in 1-A and 1-B already. Maybe there's no room""Why are you here if you don't care?"
"Why are you?" Ren read the schedule twice. Then wrote: Deficit vs Hero Course begins immediately. Need compensate outside formal curriculum. Legal constraints: cannot access Hero training without authorization. Need PE data. Need faculty visibility. Need Sports Festival qualification structure. Need Shinso assessment. A folded paper tapped the edge of his desk from behind. Ren looked down. It read: You write like you're planning a prison break. Ren turned. Shinso leaned back, expression bored.
Ren took his pencil and wrote beneath it: Incorrect. Prison breaks involve leaving. He passed it back. A pause. Then Shinso's quiet huff of amusement. The paper returned. So what are you breaking into? Ren stared at it. Then wrote: A measurement system. Shinso read it. His eyes lifted to Ren's. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Shinso folded the paper and put it away. Not discarded. Kept. Interesting. The entrance ceremony happened in the main auditorium. All first-years attended.
Ren walked with Class 1-C through corridors that joined the larger student flow. Hero Course students merged from another hallway, and the difference became visible without anyone announcing it. Izuku spotted Ren almost immediately. He lifted one hand. Ren nodded. Bakugo saw the nod and looked away with theatrical disgust. Uraraka smiled. Iida bowed while walking, which seemed unsafe and yet somehow executed with precision. Shinso walked beside Ren with hands in his pockets.
"Friends in Hero Course?"
"Complicated""That is usually yes with extra damage" Ren looked at him.
"Accurate" Shinso glanced toward Izuku.
"Midoriya, right? The one who broke himself during the exam" Ren's attention sharpened.
"You know him?"
"Everyone knows him. Zero villain points, huge rescue play, mystery Quirk that looked like he borrowed a lightning strike and forgot the instructions" Ren did not react. Shinso noticed.
"You know something?"
"No""Bad lie""Insufficient lie""Same thing" Ren looked ahead.
"You interested in him?"
"He got what I wanted" There was no bitterness in Shinso's voice. No. That was not true. There was bitterness. It was simply old enough to sit calmly. Ren said "Same" Shinso looked at him. The auditorium doors opened before he answered. The entrance ceremony was exactly as ceremonial as Ren feared. Speeches. Welcome. Responsibility. U. A. legacy. Future of society. Youth and promise. Safety and courage. A senior student representative spoke with polished confidence. A faculty member discussed school standards.
Nezu gave a speech that sounded charming on the surface and strategically invasive beneath it. Present Mic nearly deafened three rows while introducing the student life overview. Several students looked inspired. Ren took notes on every institutional phrase that might imply evaluation criteria. Shinso saw.
"You ever turn off?"
"No""That sounds miserable""Yes" The Hero Course sat several rows ahead. Ren could see the backs of their heads. Izuku's green hair. Bakugo's ash-blond spikes. Iida's rigid posture. Uraraka leaning slightly forward. Others he knew only from fragments or public exam visibility. Todoroki Shoto was there too. Half-red. Half-white. Still as a drawn blade. Ren's memory stirred. Ice. Fire. A stadium. A boy refusing half of himself. Pain buried under inheritance. Ren looked away before the fragment deepened. Not today.
Too many variables already. After the ceremony, classes separated again. That was the day's rhythm. Together for ideals. Apart for reality. Lunch came before afternoon orientation. Ren had promised Izuku. He also had promised Hana not to skip lunch. Efficient convergence. He entered the cafeteria with Class 1-C and immediately understood why U. A. students spoke about Lunch Rush with near-religious respect.
The cafeteria was enormous, bright, organized, and filled with food that looked too good for an educational institution. Steam rose from bowls. Lines moved quickly. Students from different departments mixed in clusters that still somehow preserved hierarchy. Hero Course students drew glances even when no one admitted it. Ren selected katsudon because some emotional support structures were valid. Shinso stood beside him with a tray.
"Didn't peg you for katsudon""You have insufficient data""Fair""You?"
"Whatever has caffeine""That is not lunch""It's a lifestyle""Unsustainable""Hero Course rejection didn't kill me. Lunch won't" Ren looked at him. Shinso looked back. Then sighed and added rice, fish, and vegetables to the tray with visible resentment.
"Happy?"
"No. Less concerned""Tragic" They found Izuku already sitting with Uraraka and Iida at a table near the side. Izuku waved too quickly, then noticed Shinso and hesitated. Not fear. Uncertainty. Ren set his tray down.
"This is Shinso" Shinso looked at him.
"That was abrupt""Yes" Izuku stood halfway.
"Izuku Midoriya. Nice to meet you" Shinso's eyes fixed on him.
"Hero Course" Izuku flushed.
"Yes. Class 1-A""Zero Pointer guy" The red deepened.
"I guess" Uraraka smiled awkwardly.
"He saved me" Shinso looked at her.
"I heard" Iida adjusted his glasses.
"His conduct was admirable, though his bodily preparation for the act requires significant improvement" Izuku seemed to shrink. Ren sat.
"Accurate""Ren" Uraraka said"What?" Izuku sat slowly.
"No, he's right" Shinso took the seat beside Ren, watching all of them with the guarded interest of someone approaching an unfamiliar animal that might bite or offer food. Uraraka tilted her head.
"You're in General Studies too?" Shinso's expression flattened slightly.
"Yes""Oh. Sorry, I didn't mean""Everyone doesn't mean" Uraraka winced. Ren looked at Shinso.
"Unnecessary" Shinso looked at him.
"Accurate""Both" The table went quiet. Then Uraraka nodded.
"That's fair" Shinso blinked. She continued "I really didn't mean it badly. But I guess you probably hear that a lot, so I'll try not to be weird about it" Shinso stared at her as if she had used a language he understood but had not expected in this building. Izuku smiled softly. Iida nodded.
"A commendable self-correction" Uraraka laughed.
"Thanks, Iida" Shinso looked at Ren.
"Are they always like this?"
"Yes""I just met them""Pattern recognition" Izuku leaned forward.
"Ren says that a lot""Because it explains many things" Shinso looked at Izuku.
"And you broke your arm with a Quirk you can't use properly" Izuku froze. Uraraka said "Shinso" Iida straightened. Ren watched. Important. Izuku swallowed.
"Yes" Shinso's eyes sharpened. He had expected defense. Excuses. Maybe offense. Izuku looked at his right hand.
"I did""Why?" Ren went very still. Izuku's answer mattered. At first, it seemed he would say something simple. Because Uraraka was trapped. Because the robot was coming. Because there was no time. Instead, he said "Because I had power for the first time and still arrived too late to know how to use it safely" Ren stopped eating. Shinso's expression changed. Uraraka looked down. Iida's posture softened by one degree. Izuku continued, voice quiet.
"I saved her. I'm glad I did. But I think I also proved how unprepared I was" He looked at Ren briefly.
"Recovery first" Ren nodded once. Shinso leaned back.
"Well. That's less annoying than expected" Izuku blinked.
"Thank you?"
"Don't sound so grateful. The bar was low" Uraraka made a tiny offended sound. Then laughed despite herself. The table breathed. Small. Repeatable. Bakugo passed behind them with a tray piled high enough to suggest either hunger or aggression. His eyes swept the table. Ren. Shinso. Izuku. Uraraka. Iida. His lip curled.
"Deku collecting strays now?" Izuku stiffened. Shinso's eyes narrowed lazily. Danger. Verbal engagement risk. Ren spoke before Shinso could.
"Your insult distribution remains inefficient" Bakugo stopped.
"Oh, you want some too?" Shinso looked at Ren.
"You do this often?"
"Too often" Izuku whispered Ren ignored both.
"Strays implies lack of ownership. Collecting implies acquisition. The metaphor conflicts" Bakugo stared. Uraraka put both hands over her mouth. Iida looked deeply conflicted between condemning the disruption and appreciating the linguistic critique. Shinso muttered "That was awful" Ren said "Yes" Bakugo's palm crackled. Then a cafeteria staff member with four arms pointed a ladle at him.
"No explosions near the miso" Bakugo glared at the ladle. The ladle did not care. He clicked his tongue and walked away. Shinso watched him go.
"That's Bakugo""Yes" Izuku said softly"He always like that?" Ren looked at Izuku. Izuku looked at his tray.
"Yes" he said Not protective. Not apologetic. Just quiet. Progress. Shinso noticed that too. The lunch bell eventually split them apart. Hero Course to Heroics orientation. General Studies to afternoon academic briefing. Again, the paths diverged. Izuku looked at Ren before leaving.
"After school?" Ren considered. Medical clearance allowed light activity. Emotional state uncertain. Need review Class 1-C. Need begin Transfer Path. Need avoid overloading first day. Also Hana expected message.
"Not training" Ren said Izuku nodded.
"Planning?"
"Maybe" Shinso looked between them.
"You two schedule everything?"
"Yes" Ren said"I try" Izuku said Uraraka waved as they left. Iida bowed again. Bakugo did not look back. Shinso watched the Hero Course students disappear down the hallway.
"Looks exhausting""It is""You're still trying to get there""Yes" He looked at Ren.
"Why?" The hallway noise moved around them. The easy answer was old. To become a hero. To prove them wrong. To reach the door. To be there before the disasters. To not stand aside while fragments became bodies on the ground. Ren said "Because General Studies is a road, not the destination" Shinso's face gave away nothing. Then he said "Good" Ren glanced at him.
"That was approval?"
"Don't get attached to it""I won't""Good" They walked back to Building C together. Afternoon orientation was about schedules, grading, conduct, department rules, library access, counseling services, Sports Festival eligibility, club applications, and the bureaucratic anatomy of U. A. Ren took notes until his hand ached. Kurose noticed but did not tell him to stop. That earned her one more line in RULES. Allows self-directed coping if not disruptive.
At the end of the day, she stood at the front of the classroom while students packed their bags.
"One more thing" The room quieted.
"Some of you will spend the next weeks staring at the Hero Course" Several students froze. Ren did not. Shinso leaned back. Kurose's gaze moved across them.
"If you do, at least be honest about what you are looking at. Do not only look at their power. Look at their workload. Their injuries. Their mistakes. Their instructors. Their access. Their expectations. Their advantages. Their traps" Ren wrote quickly.
"Envy is a poor teacher when you refuse to study the whole lesson" The pencil stopped. Kurose looked directly at Ren. Then at Shinso. Then away.
"Dismissed" Class 1-C emptied slowly. Some students left in groups. Some alone. Some already laughing like the day had not wounded them. Others carried silence carefully. Ren packed his bag. Shinso remained seated behind him. Neither moved for a moment. Then Shinso said "You really got thirty-four rescue points?" Ren looked back.
"How do you know that?"
"People talk""People exaggerate""So?"
"Yes" Shinso's eyes sharpened.
"And still didn't get in""No" He was quiet. Then he said "I got zero" Ren turned fully.
"Rescue?"
"Villain too" Ren paused. Shinso's face remained blank.
"My Quirk works if people answer. Robots don't answer" Ah. Of course. The entrance exam had asked a boy with a mind-control Quirk to fight machines. A measurement system. Ren felt anger rise. Not for himself this time. Cleaner. Sharper.
"That is structurally absurd" Shinso blinked. Then laughed once under his breath.
"Yeah""It measured the wrong thing""Measured something""Not hero potential" Shinso's eyes narrowed slightly.
"You believe that?"
"Yes""Why?"
"Your Quirk could end a hostage crisis faster than most combat Quirks. It could stop a villain before property damage begins. It could prevent injury if applied ethically and quickly. Against humans, you are dangerous. Against robots, you are a spectator by design" The words landed harder than intended. Shinso looked away. Ren waited. Finally, Shinso said "People don't usually list practical uses before calling it villainous""People are lazy""That your official diagnosis?"
"Repeated observation" Shinso's mouth twitched. Then he looked at Ren's bandaged hand.
"You got thirty-four rescue points and they still put you here""Yes""I got zero because robots don't talk""Yes" He stood and picked up his bag.
"Sports Festival then" Ren looked at him. The words were not a question. They were a declaration placed on the floor between them like a blade. Ren stood too.
"Sports Festival" Shinso nodded once. Not alliance. Not friendship. Not yet. Recognition. Outside, the late afternoon light stretched long across U. A.' s corridors. Through the window, Ren could see distant training grounds, Hero Course buildings, students moving between departments, and the campus opening itself in layers he had only begun to map. He thought of the gate. The split path. Kurose's words. Nezu's projection. Izuku's crooked tie. Bakugo's grin. Shinso's zero points.
A class full of roads that did not know yet whether they led anywhere. Ren adjusted the strap of his bag. His first day at U. A. was over. He had not entered Hero Course. He had not healed the rejection. He had not become enough by walking through the gate. But he had found another student staring at the same locked door from a different angle, with a Quirk the exam had failed to measure and an anger old enough to be useful if it did not rot first. That was not victory. It was not consolation. It was terrain.
Ren could work with terrain.
