Chương 59: The Offers That Remain

The internship briefing began with Kurose writing three words on the board. OFFER ACCESS CAPACITY Ren disliked the third one immediately. This was how he knew it mattered. Class 1-C settled into the room with the particular exhaustion of students who had survived the Sports Festival, hero name seminars, agency disclosure lessons, cross-course evaluation, emotional paperwork, and enough adult oversight to make freedom feel like something that had to be submitted in triplicate.
The room had changed since the festival. Not visibly. The desks were the same. The windows were the same. Sano was still attempting to communicate with Kenta using eyebrow movements that were either tactical signals or an untreated condition. But the class no longer felt like a place people had been placed after failing to enter the real story. That made the room heavier. Hope had weight. Kurose turned from the board.
"Internship season begins for the Hero Course this week" A ripple moved through the room. Not envy exactly. Not only envy. Everyone knew what internships meant. Pro heroes. Agencies. Fieldwork. The first real step from school into the world that had watched them from stadium seats and screens. The Hero Course would choose from nominations, recommendations, teacher guidance, legacy contacts, and the kind of institutional machinery that had existed long before anyone in General Studies got close enough to touch it.
Kurose waited until the room quieted.
"Because of the Sports Festival and the new Cross-Course Hero Candidate Evaluation Track, several students in this class will also receive controlled professional exposure opportunities" Sano's hand rose. Kurose said "No costumes" His hand lowered.
"I had a broader question""You had a costume-shaped aura" Midnight had infected her. Ren wrote aura-based preemption in his notebook because some phrases deserved documentation. Kurose tapped the first word.
"Offer. An offer means someone sees possible use, possible value, or possible benefit in contacting you. It does not mean you are better than classmates who did not receive one" She tapped the second.
"Access. Access means the school has decided whether you are allowed to approach the offer, and under what restrictions" Then the third.
"Capacity. Capacity means whether your body, mind, family situation, training level, and current support structures can actually handle what is being offered" Ren kept his right hand flat. No thread. No tension. Still. Kurose's gaze crossed the room and did not stop on him. Good. She continued "Most disasters in hero education begin when people confuse offer with capacity" That sentence deserved a box around it. Ren drew one.
Shinso, beside him, looked at his own notebook and wrote something with enough pressure to scar the paper. Kurose held up a folder.
"Selected students will receive individual briefings. No one is required to share. No one is permitted to interrogate. No one treats another student's restriction as failure" Sano raised his hand again. Kurose looked at him.
"May I ask whether morale support internships exist?"
"They do" Sano froze. Kurose's expression remained perfectly serious.
"Mostly under rescue coordination, evacuation support, communication logistics, and disaster response welfare systems" Sano lowered his hand very slowly.
"I was not prepared to be taken seriously""Begin preparing" Arai smiled into her notes. Kenta looked thoughtful. That was happening more often lately. Kurose passed out sealed envelopes. Not to everyone. That was the first cruelty. Kenta received one. Arai received one. Sano received one and held it as if it might explode into responsibility. Shinso received one. Ren received one. Several students did not. The room tried not to notice. It failed because silence was also a kind of noticing.
Kurose addressed that before it became rot.
"Those without envelopes are not invisible. Some of you will receive later academic, support, business, rescue, or departmental recommendations. Some of you are not currently seeking professional exposure. Some of you need more time before outside institutions are allowed near your growth. That is not a smaller path" She let the words settle.
"Do not turn someone else's envelope into a verdict against yourself" Ren looked at the envelope on his desk. White. Plain. His name printed neatly. AKIYAMA REN Not Anchor. Not Scar Tissue. Not Scar Hero. Not Painproof. His name. Good. He opened it. Inside were three pages.
Page one: CROSS-COURSE HERO CANDIDATE EVALUATION PROFESSIONAL EXPOSURE STATUS Page two: MEDICAL RESTRICTION OVERRIDE Page three: APPROVED CONTACTS AND DELAYED OPPORTUNITIES The first line answered the question before Ren could pretend not to ask it. No external field internship clearance at this time. His body understood before his mind softened the impact. His right index finger pressed against the paper. No heat. No thread. Just pressure. Ren read again. No external field internship clearance at this time.
Not rejected. Restricted. Because offer was not capacity. Because his body had only recently stopped treating walking as evidence. Because Scar Tension was one second of grip and release, not a license to enter a collapsed building with a camera crew and a heroic narrative. Because Recovery Girl had a pen and rage. Because Kurose had locks. Because Hana and Daichi had consent forms. Because he had said yes to being protected even when protection looked like being stopped. He hated it.
He wrote under the line in his notebook: Hate does not equal wrong. Then he read the rest. Approved: U. A. internal rescue theory observation. Approved: non-combat hazard assessment seminar under Cementoss and Thirteen, pending medical check. Approved: written correspondence review with urban collapse rescue agency under Kurose supervision. Delayed: all field internships. Denied: combat durability observation. Denied: extreme-environment training. Denied: all direct agency contact without renewed review.
Ren stared at the approved section. Cementoss. Thirteen. Hazard assessment. Non-combat. Theory. Not nothing. Not enough for the part of him that had once wanted U. A. to look and never stop looking. Probably good. Beside him, Shinso opened his own envelope. His face changed by one millimeter. Ren did not look. Shinso pushed the first page halfway toward him after a few seconds. Ren glanced. If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
Approved: underground hero observation block under Eraser Head. Approved: movement fundamentals. Approved: verbal Quirk ethics and restraint module. Delayed: external agency internships until physical baseline and support plan established. Denied: public debate appearances. Denied: unsupervised control-based field observation. Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso stared at the page.
"Hallway" he said softly Ren nodded.
"Hallway" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Long one""Yes""Not no""No" That helped. Not enough. But help rarely arrived as enough. Across the room, Sano opened his envelope and stared. His face went so still that half the class noticed. Kurose noticed too.
"Sano" He looked up slowly.
"Rescue communication logistics observation""Yes" His eyes widened.
"That is real""Yes""I thought the morale thing was""A joke?" He closed his mouth. Kurose's voice remained firm.
"You have disruptive instincts. You also have a strong sense for when a room is about to panic. Under structure, that is not nothing" Sano looked down at the paper. For once, he had no immediate answer. Kenta leaned over.
"Signal" Sano covered his face with the envelope.
"Do not witness me professionally" Arai read hers in silence. Ren caught only the top line when she angled the page by accident. Support equipment calibration observation. Her shoulders rose. Then lowered. Calibration. The room changed again. Not everyone had the same path. Good. Painful. Good. Kurose gave them ten minutes to read in silence. Then she began the second half of the lesson.
"Now we discuss refusal" Sano lowered his envelope.
"We just got opportunities""Yes""And now refusal?"
"Yes" Shinso muttered "Education hates momentum" Kurose heard him.
"Bad momentum deserves hatred" She wrote on the board: YOU MAY WANT WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT ACCEPT YET Ren stared at the line. His envelope seemed heavier. Kurose said "Akiyama" He looked up.
"Read the line" His throat tightened. This was not punishment. It was structure. He read aloud.
"You may want what you should not accept yet" Kurose nodded.
"Again" He did.
"You may want what you should not accept yet" The class listened. Not pity. Not spectacle. Witness. Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Your version" Shinso's jaw tightened. He read from the board too.
"You may want what you should not accept yet" Kurose said "Again" Shinso's voice sharpened.
"You may want what you should not accept yet""Good" Shinso closed his eyes. Sano whispered "The word has administrative power now" Kurose turned.
"Sano" He straightened.
"Your version" His eyes widened.
"Oh no""Read" Sano looked at the board. Then at his envelope. Then back.
"You may want what you should not accept yet" His voice was quieter than usual. Kurose nodded.
"Everyone writes it" They wrote it. No one joked. The sentence was rude enough to be universal. After class, the individual briefings began. Ren's was scheduled during lunch because Recovery Girl had declared that any meeting involving disappointment must be paired with food or she would classify it as institutional malnutrition. Ren sat in Kurose's office with his lunch box open, Kurose at her desk, Recovery Girl in the side chair, and Nezu on the monitor. No All Might. No Aizawa.
This was not a fragment matter, not a Symbol matter, not a combat matter. This was capacity. That made it worse. Kurose placed the page on the desk.
"You understand the external field internship denial?" Ren looked at the line.
"Yes" Recovery Girl said "Say it without sounding like you are at a funeral for your ego" Ren exhaled.
"Yes. I understand external field internship is denied because current medical condition, Quirk instability, and psychological reinforcement risk make it unsafe" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Better" Nezu said "Do you disagree with the decision?" Ren looked at the approved alternatives.
"I dislike it""That is not disagreement""No" Recovery Girl leaned forward.
"Do you believe we are underestimating you?" That question was sharper. Ren thought about saying no. Then reported.
"Yes. Partly. And I believe I am overestimating what being selected would prove" Kurose's pen moved. Nezu's eyes gleamed faintly. Recovery Girl said "Good" Ren closed his eyes. The word had become a bruise that healed by being pressed correctly. Kurose said "The urban collapse rescue agency interest is legitimate. They asked about recovery before training. They used cautious language. They are willing to begin with written scenario analysis and no field contact" Ren opened his eyes.
"Could that lead to an internship later?"
"Yes""When?"
"Not before the next medical review and not before you demonstrate repeated low-level Scar Tension release control" Release. Not grip. Of course. Ren nodded.
"Cementoss and Thirteen?"
"Internal observation. Controlled environment. You will attend hazard assessment seminar, review non-combat rescue priorities, and write analysis. No physical participation without separate clearance" Ren could work with that. He wanted more. He could work with that. Nezu said "There is another reason for internal placement" Ren looked at him.
"Security" Kurose answered "Yes" The room became colder. Not physically. Ren's fingers stilled. Recovery Girl watched the monitor. Kurose continued "Your public profile increased. Your medical and fragment protocols remain restricted. Internal placement keeps you inside known systems while attention decreases" Ren said "Will attention decrease?" Nezu smiled without humor.
"Not as much as we would like" Ren thought of Garaki without knowing why. A file opening. A gloved hand. No clear image. No fragment. Just dread with a laboratory smell that might have been imagination.
"Status" Recovery Girl said Ren breathed.
"Yellow. Threat association. No image. No heat. No activation" Kurose wrote.
"Any trigger?"
"Security discussion. Public profile" Nezu's expression sharpened.
"We will note it" Ren ate because the lunch box was open and because Recovery Girl had the expression of someone willing to weaponize chopsticks. The briefing ended with a schedule. Monday: rescue theory. Wednesday: medical Scar Tension observation. Friday: hazard assessment seminar. No field. No agency visit. No heroics. Work. That was allowed to be enough. He was trying to believe it. When he returned to the cafeteria, the table had shifted into one of its stranger configurations.
Shinso sat beside Arai, both reading their envelopes. Kenta and Sano were discussing whether Signal required radio training. Uraraka, Iida, and Midoriya stood nearby with their trays, apparently mid-conversation. Todoroki sat at the far edge with his own tray, not fully part of the table but not separate either. That arrangement seemed to reflect all of them more accurately than comfort would have. Ren sat down. Midoriya looked up.
"Status?" Ren blinked. Then answered.
"External field internship denied. Internal rescue theory and hazard assessment approved. Written agency contact delayed. Stable" Midoriya nodded like he understood the importance of not immediately saying sorry.
"Good?" Ren considered.
"Yes. Painfully" Shinso snorted.
"The family vocabulary spreads" Iida's face was tight. Ren noticed only then. Not in the obvious way. Iida was too composed, which for Iida meant something beneath the structure had begun to crack. His tray was full but untouched. His phone sat face down near his hand. His glasses had been adjusted too often; one side sat half a millimeter higher than usual. Ren looked at him.
"Iida" Iida straightened.
"Yes?"
"Status?" The table quieted. Iida looked startled.
"I am not part of your medical protocol" Shinso said "Lucky" Ren did not look away. Iida's mouth tightened.
"I am stable" Not an answer. Midoriya noticed too. Uraraka's hand hovered near her tray. Todoroki's gaze moved to Iida. Ren said "That is a conclusion" Iida's fingers moved to his glasses. Then stopped.
"My brother is dealing with a difficult case in Hosu. I am awaiting further news" The sentence was technically complete. It was emotionally starved. Ren felt the word before he understood why. Hosu. A city name. A station sign at night. An alley. Engines stopped. A blade. A scarf or cloth moving wrong in the dark. A hero on the ground. Iida's hand shaking. Not now. No. Ren's pulse spiked. His right hand went flat on the table. No thread. No heat. Fragment? Maybe. Not enough. Kurose was not here.
Recovery Girl was not here. Shinso's eyes snapped to him.
"Status" The table froze. Ren swallowed.
"Yellow. Possible fragment-adjacent threat association. Trigger Hosu and brother. No clear image. No heat. No action" Midoriya went pale. Iida stood.
"What does that mean?" Ren looked at him. Too many people. Too public. Not enough protocol.
"It means I need Kurose" Iida's face sharpened.
"If this concerns my brother" Ren cut in carefully.
"I do not know that it does" That was true. Insufficient. Todoroki's expression changed because he knew this shape now. A locked door instead of no room. Shinso stood.
"I will get Kurose" Ren nodded.
"Thank you" Iida's hands trembled once before he forced them still. Midoriya looked between Ren and Iida with open fear. Uraraka said softly "Iida" Iida did not look at her. Ren said "Iida, do not turn uncertainty into action" The sentence landed badly. Iida's eyes flashed.
"I do not need a lecture about action""No" Ren kept his voice even.
"You need time before action takes your shape without permission" The table went silent. Iida looked as if Ren had struck him somewhere private. Maybe he had. Maybe he should not have. Maybe it was still necessary. Kurose arrived within two minutes because Shinso could move very quickly when motivated by classified disaster and cafeteria tension. She assessed the table in one glance.
"Akiyama" Ren reported.
"Yellow. Possible fragment-adjacent threat association triggered by Hosu and Iida's brother. Images partial. Station sign or city marker. Alley. Blade. Engines stopped. Hero down. No confirmed timing. No villain identity. No heat. No activation. Public setting unsafe" Kurose's expression changed only by becoming sharper. Iida stared at Ren.
"Hero down?" Kurose turned to him.
"Iida, this is not confirmed information" His face had gone pale.
"Is it about my brother?" Ren said "I do not know" Iida's phone rang. The sound cut through the cafeteria. Every person at the table looked down. Iida stared at the screen. His hand did not move. Midoriya whispered "Iida" Iida picked up the phone. He turned away from the table but not far enough to stop them hearing the first sentence.
"This is Iida Tenya" Silence. Then his back went rigid. Ren knew before Iida spoke again. Fragments were unnecessary when the body understood impact.
"I understand" No. He did not. He could not.
"I will come immediately" He lowered the phone. His face was blank. Uraraka stood. Midoriya stood too. Iida turned back.
"My brother has been taken to Hosu General Hospital" The cafeteria sound blurred. Ren's earlier images settled into place like knives finding slots. Not proof. Not prophecy now. News. Terrible news. Kurose stepped closer.
"Iida" He bowed stiffly.
"I must leave""Yes. You will go through proper school procedure. You will not travel alone if avoidable. You will inform your homeroom teacher and family contact" His mouth opened. Closed. His glasses hid his eyes briefly.
"Yes" Midoriya looked like he wanted to follow immediately. Kurose saw that too.
"Midoriya, you do not move unless instructed" Midoriya froze.
"Yes ma'am" Todoroki stood slowly. No one told him to sit. Iida looked at Ren. The anger was still there. Fear now too.
"What did you see?" Kurose answered before Ren could.
"Not here" Iida's jaw tightened. Ren held his gaze.
"Not enough to help your brother right now. Enough to make me say do not go alone later" Iida's face changed. Not acceptance. Not refusal. A dangerous middle. Kurose stepped between them just enough to break the line.
"Iida, with me" He nodded. Then left with her. The cafeteria remained too silent after he was gone. Midoriya sat down because Uraraka gently pulled his sleeve and because his own knees seemed uncertain. Todoroki remained standing for several seconds before sitting again, eyes on the door Iida had left through. Shinso returned to Ren's side.
"Status" Ren looked at the untouched lunch on the table.
"Yellow-high. No heat. Fear. Regret wording. Need documentation" Shinso nodded.
"I'll walk" Ren looked at him.
"You do not know content""I know enough to walk to Kurose's office without asking" Ren nodded.
"Thank you" Todoroki spoke then.
"Locked door?" Ren looked at him. Todoroki's face was unreadable. Ren answered carefully.
"Open emergency window. Not a family door" Todoroki nodded once. He understood the difference. Midoriya looked between them and clearly did not. No one explained. Kurose's office became protocol again. Ren reported the fragment in full to Kurose, Recovery Girl by secure call, and Nezu on the monitor. Shinso waited outside the office because this was not his content and because he had become very good at hating that correctly. Ren described the trigger. Hosu. Brother. Iida. Alley. Blade. Engines stopped. Hero down.
Possibility of future retaliatory action. Kurose's pen moved fast. Recovery Girl asked physical markers. Nezu asked whether the villain identity was clear. Ren hesitated. There was a shape. A name from memory. Hero Killer. Stain. But had the news said it yet? Had Iida? Had the school? Was the name public already? Ren could not trust the line between fragment and knowledge.
"Possible association with Hero Killer" Ren said "Unclear if from prior public information or fragment. Treat as contaminated" Nezu nodded.
"Noted" Kurose asked "Safety-actionable?" Ren felt sick.
"Yes. Not for the attack that already happened. For Iida's likely response" Recovery Girl said "Explain" Ren looked at the desk.
"Iida is structured. Family honor. Engine Quirk. Brother hospitalized in Hosu. If attacker remains active and internships begin, he may choose an agency near Hosu or attempt contact with investigation. Revenge risk" Kurose wrote without looking up. Nezu's expression was grave.
"Recommended action?" Ren breathed.
"Welfare monitoring. Notify Aizawa and 1-A homeroom that Iida is at revenge risk without disclosing fragment specifics beyond security concern. Review his internship selection if Hosu appears. Do not let Midoriya or Uraraka act unsupervised based on concern. Do not tell Iida he is predicted to seek revenge in a way that challenges him to disprove it through secrecy" Kurose stopped writing for one second. Then continued. Recovery Girl said "Good" Ren closed his eyes. The word hurt more this time.
Nezu said "This is actionable within protocol. We will proceed" Ren opened his eyes.
"Will Iida be told anything?" Kurose said "He will be told that staff are concerned about his welfare and that revenge behavior is being monitored because of the circumstances. He will not be told you provided predictive detail" Ren nodded.
"Good" The room went still. Then Recovery Girl said "Food" Ren looked at the screen.
"What?"
"You did not finish lunch""A student's brother was""Food" Kurose said "Recovery Girl is correct" Ren stared. Nezu added "If you wish your threat assessments to remain credible, keep the assessor functional" That was manipulative. Accurate. He ate the emergency nutrition bar Kurose produced from a drawer labeled students who claim they are not hungry. He did not ask why the drawer existed. That evening, news confirmed what the phone call had only begun. Pro Hero Ingenium had been attacked in Hosu.
Hero Killer Stain was suspected. Critical injuries. Alive. Ren read the staff-approved summary in Kurose's office, not alone, not on social media, not through looping footage. The word alive mattered. The word critical did too. Iida left campus with family authorization. Midoriya sent one message to the group chat. Iida's brother is alive. He is at the hospital. Please do not pressure him for details. Uraraka added a heart. Iida did not respond. Shinso texted Ren privately. Do you need food or silence? Ren replied.
Both Shinso answered. Efficiently tragic. I will inform the food network. Ren almost smiled. Almost. Hana picked Ren up that evening with Daichi in the car and a container of rice balls in the back seat. Shinso came too, not for dinner at first, then for dinner because Hana's food network apparently used gravity. In the car, no one asked for details. Ren gave the safe summary.
"Iida's brother was attacked. I had a safety-actionable fragment related to Iida's likely response. Staff are handling it" Daichi's hands tightened on the wheel.
"Hosu" Ren looked at him.
"You saw the news?"
"Yes" Hana's voice was quiet.
"Is Iida the boy with glasses who speaks very formally?"
"Yes""He must be terrified" Ren looked out the window.
"Yes" Shinso sat beside him, umbrella between his knees.
"Terrified people with rules can become dangerous when the rules break" No one answered immediately. Because yes. At dinner, the television stayed off. Hana made too much food. Daichi did not name any objects. Shinso ate without argument. Ren wrote nothing until after the approved time, and when he did, he wrote only protocol-safe lines. Internship offers began today. I am not cleared for fieldwork. Iida's brother was attacked. Hosu is no longer just a city name. Then: Opportunity chooses timing badly. He stopped.
The next line took longer. Seeing danger does not mean I know how to save everyone from it. He closed the notebook. Outside, somewhere beyond the apartment, a hero lay in a hospital bed, a brother carried a shape of grief that could become a blade if no one caught it, and internships waited like doors opening onto streets where school protocols thinned. Ren touched the card tucked inside his notebook. Anchor. A direction. Not a guarantee. Anchors did not stop storms.
They only gave something a chance not to drift alone. For tonight, that had to be enough.
