Izuku Midoriya arrived exactly three minutes early. Ren Akiyama disliked that he noticed. He disliked more that he had expected it. The meeting place was a side courtyard between the academic building and one of the smaller administrative wings, selected because it had three exits, low foot traffic after modified classes, no direct line to the media-facing gates, and enough benches that sitting did not look like medical necessity if one was willing to lie to oneself.
Ren was not willing to lie to himself about that today. He sat. Slowly. His ribs punished the final inch. The bandage beneath his uniform pulled when he breathed too deeply. His forearm itched under the sleeve. The cut on his cheek had faded enough that people stopped staring at it first and started staring at everything else second. That was not an improvement. The courtyard looked unchanged by USJ. Small trees. Clean stone path. Water feature shut off for winter maintenance. U. A.
architecture framing sky in precise rectangles. Everything expensive and functional and designed to tell students that order was something adults could build if they cared enough and had enough funding. Ren did not trust clean courtyards anymore. Izuku entered from the left path with Uraraka and Iida beside him. Not alone. Good. Maybe. Uraraka saw Ren first and lifted a hand. Ren nodded. Iida stopped two steps away and bowed with enough care that Ren suspected his body was still sore.
"Akiyama. Thank you for agreeing to speak with Midoriya. We will remain nearby but not intrude unless needed" Ren looked at him.
"That sounded rehearsed" Iida stiffened. Uraraka winced. Izuku looked mortified. Iida adjusted his glasses.
"It was prepared for clarity""Accepted" Iida relaxed by exactly twelve percent. Uraraka leaned forward slightly.
"How are you feeling?" Ren considered several answers and selected the one least likely to trigger intervention.
"Recovering" Her eyes narrowed.
"That is not an answer""It is a category" Iida nodded once before catching himself. Uraraka sighed.
"Okay. Same, I guess" Same. Recovering. Not fine. That was better than fine. Izuku stood behind them, hands curled around the straps of his bag. His bandaged hand was mostly hidden but not enough. His face looked less swollen than it had in triage, though exhaustion sat under his eyes with stubborn weight. He had probably slept. Badly. He had probably written notes. Too many. He had probably replayed the flood zone, the plaza, Iida's escape, Aizawa's body, All Might's arrival, and every place he had not been.
Ren knew because the shape of that kind of replay was familiar. Iida turned to Izuku.
"We will be at the far bench" Uraraka looked between them.
"Text if either of you starts being too much" Ren said "Define too much" She pointed at him.
"You know" He did. Annoying. Izuku nodded at his friends.
"Thank you" Uraraka smiled, small and tired.
"Alive first" Ren blinked. Izuku looked at him. Uraraka shrugged.
"He told me" Ren looked at Izuku. Izuku's face reddened.
"I thought it was useful""It is not mine" Uraraka's smile softened.
"Still useful" She and Iida walked away to the far bench, close enough to see, far enough to let the conversation pretend privacy existed. Izuku remained standing. Ren looked at the bench beside him.
"Sitting is allowed" Izuku sat immediately. Too immediately. Ren almost commented. Did not. Progress. For several seconds, neither spoke. U. A. continued around them. Somewhere beyond the courtyard, a class changed rooms. A staff member spoke into a radio. A cart rolled along pavement with a soft, repetitive clatter. Life had learned to move quietly after USJ. Izuku gripped his knees. Ren waited. He had told him no apologies first. Izuku knew. The rule sat between them like a fragile object. Finally, Izuku inhaled.
"I'm alive" Ren turned his head slightly. Izuku's voice shook on the second word, but it held.
"I'm alive today" Ren nodded.
"Good" Izuku swallowed.
"You're alive""Yes""I'm glad""So am I" That seemed to surprise him. Ren looked forward again. The courtyard stones had small imperfections where rainwater had dried unevenly. They were useful to look at. Izuku said "No apologies first""Correct""I can do that""You just did""Right" Silence again. Better silence. Not comfortable. Alive. Izuku stared at his bandaged hand.
"I keep thinking about the water zone" Ren did not interrupt.
"That sounds stupid because of course I do. It was where I was. But I keep thinking about how we were separated. How the black fog moved us like pieces. How Aizawa-sensei was alone because we were scattered. How Iida had to run. How Tsuyu and Mineta were with me, and I could barely protect them, and then I hear about 1-C in shelters and maintenance corridors and I think" He stopped. Ren waited. Izuku's hands tightened.
"I think I should have been more" There it was. Not apology. Worse. Ren breathed in shallowly. His ribs answered.
"You mean more present?" Izuku nodded once.
"More useful?" Another nod.
"More prepared?"
"Yes""More everywhere?" Izuku flinched. Ren looked at him fully.
"You keep apologizing for not being everywhere. That is not guilt. That is arrogance wearing guilt's clothes" Izuku stared. Uraraka's head turned from the far bench, as if she had not heard the words but had felt the impact of them across the courtyard. Iida straightened. Izuku's mouth opened. Closed. Ren did not soften it. Not yet. If he softened it too early, Izuku would keep the guilt and discard the correction. Izuku looked down at his bandaged hand.
"I don't think I'm that important""No. You think responsibility expands to fill every place your fear can imagine" Izuku's face went pale.
"That's not""It is" Ren's voice remained level.
"That does not make you selfish. It makes you dangerous to yourself" Izuku swallowed hard. Ren looked away before the expression became too much.
"I recognize it" That changed the sentence. Izuku looked up. Ren kept his eyes on the courtyard stones.
"I am not saying this from moral superiority""I know""No. You probably don't" Izuku was quiet. Ren breathed carefully.
"USJ had too many places. You had one body. You were in one zone. You helped the people in reach. That is not failure" Izuku whispered "But other people were hurt""Yes""So how do you not""Turn that into personal debt?" Izuku's silence answered. Ren leaned back against the bench. It was a mistake. Ribs. He corrected slowly.
"I don't always succeed" Izuku's eyes moved to his torso. Ren saw him notice the pain. Good. Bad.
"Ren""No apologies" Izuku stopped. Then said "Concern is not apology" Ren considered.
"Accepted" Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
"Are your ribs""Injured. Stable" Izuku's face tightened.
"That's not enough""It is currently all you need""Is that what people told you?" Ren looked at him sharply. Izuku did not look away. Good. That was new. The green-haired boy who had clutched a hero notebook in a library years ago would have looked down by now. This one had faced villains, broken his own body, watched teachers fall, and still had fear in him but not only fear. Ren disliked pride when it appeared in his chest for other people. It complicated analysis. He said "People tell me many things.
Some are correct" Izuku nodded slowly.
"Recovery Girl yelled at you?"
"Yes""She yelled at me too""Good" Izuku blinked. Ren said "Appropriate adult response" For the first time, Izuku's mouth twitched. Small. Not a smile. Enough. Then it vanished.
"I used my Quirk again" Ren did not move. The sentence was quiet. Too quiet.
"I know" Izuku looked at him. Ren kept his face controlled.
"You were bandaged""That's not the same as knowing""It is enough to infer" Izuku studied him with a focus that had once belonged only to notebooks. Ren did not like being the page.
"Did All Might say something?"
"No" That was true. Mostly. All Might had said many things. Not that. Izuku looked relieved. Then guilty for being relieved. Predictable. Ren said "Your Quirk is hurting you" Izuku's hand curled.
"I'm learning""You are breaking""I'm trying not to""I believe you" Izuku looked startled. Ren continued "I also believe trying is not the same as method" That landed. Izuku looked down. Ren watched his profile. In fragments, Izuku had always been motion. Green light. Broken fingers. Teeth gritted. A body too small for the power inside it. A boy becoming a symbol by paying in bone before anyone had taught him that bones were not currency. In reality, he was smaller than the fragments. Not weaker. More human.
More dangerous because of it. Izuku said "I don't know how to use it without" He stopped. Ren filled the blank only in his head. Without breaking. Without owing. Without proving I deserved it. Without betraying the miracle. Aloud, Ren said "Then the first goal is not heroics. It is repeatability" Izuku looked at him.
"Repeatability?"
"If an action requires medical intervention after success, it is not mastery. It is debt" Izuku flinched again. Good. Not good. Necessary. Ren continued "A power you can use once is not a fighting style. It is ammunition. Ammunition runs out. Bodies run out worse" Izuku's eyes widened slightly. He was storing every word. Of course. Ren should be careful. He was not All Might. He was not Recovery Girl. He was not a Hero Course instructor.
He was a General Studies student with too much suspicion, too many fragments, and an unhelpful habit of sounding certain when terrified. He adjusted.
"I am not qualified to train you" Izuku almost laughed, but it broke into something smaller.
"You sound qualified""I sound structured. That is different""Maybe still useful" Ren sighed.
"There it is""What?"
"Useful" Izuku looked confused. Ren looked at his own bandaged arm.
"Dangerous word" Izuku followed his gaze. Then understood enough to hurt.
"Oh" They sat with that. Useful. The word had followed both of them to U. A. through different doors. For Izuku, useful meant worth after being called useless for too long. For Ren, useful meant proof that pain had not been wasted. Both were traps with good intentions. Izuku said "I don't want people to get hurt because I wasn't enough" Ren answered before gentleness could interfere.
"You are not enough" Izuku stared. Ren continued "No one is. That is why evacuation routes exist. That is why teams exist. That is why teachers exist. That is why Iida ran. That is why Uraraka stayed with you. That is why Tsuyu pulled you out of danger. That is why Aizawa stood until he couldn't. A hero who thinks being enough means being sufficient alone becomes a casualty with good intentions" Izuku's eyes shone. Ren looked away. Too much. He should have brought Shinso. No.
Shinso would have made it worse and better in unpredictable ratios. Izuku whispered "All Might does it" Ren's stomach tightened. There. The symbol in the room even when absent. Ren chose each word carefully.
"All Might is not evidence that the model is healthy" Izuku went still. Ren did not look at him.
"If a bridge carries too much weight for years before cracking, the lesson is not that bridges should crack more beautifully" Izuku's breath caught. He understood more than Ren intended. Maybe less. Both were dangerous. Ren added "Do not repeat that phrasing to him" Izuku turned.
"To All Might?" Ren looked at him.
"You know I know you know him" Izuku froze. There were several seconds where the entire courtyard seemed to stop moving. Then Izuku deflated slightly.
"I'm bad at hiding it""Yes""Is it that obvious?"
"To me? Yes""That is not comforting""I am rarely comforting" Izuku looked at his hands.
"He helps me""I know""He believes in me""I know""I don't want to waste what he gave me" The sentence came out too raw. Too close. Ren felt every secret in it without needing the words. What he gave me. Not taught. Gave. Izuku realized what he had said half a second later. His eyes widened. Ren spoke before panic could turn into confession.
"Then do not treat it like something that must be repaid through injury" Izuku stared. Ren kept going.
"If someone believes in you, breaking yourself is not proof that they were right. It may be proof that they failed to teach you how to survive their belief" Izuku's face changed. Pain. Defense. Recognition. Loyalty. All moving too fast.
"He didn't fail" Ren did not answer immediately. Because All Might had not failed. Because All Might had failed. Because both were true in different places.
"I said may be" Izuku looked at him. Ren's voice softened despite himself.
"Midoriya. I am not attacking him""You sound like you are""I am attacking the idea that admiration should function as load-bearing structure" Izuku blinked.
"That is such an Akiyama sentence" Ren looked offended.
"It is precise""It is" The almost-smile returned to Izuku's face for one second. Then faded.
"Do you resent me?" The question was quiet enough that Uraraka and Iida probably did not hear it. Ren did. Unfortunately. He looked at Izuku. Izuku's eyes were on his bandaged hand, not Ren's face.
"That's not fair to ask" Ren said Izuku flinched. Ren continued before he could apologize.
"But it is fair to answer" Izuku looked up slowly. Ren's throat tightened. He hated this. He hated that the answer existed.
"Yes" Izuku's face went still. Ren forced himself not to look away.
"Sometimes. Not always. Not cleanly. I resented that you were Quirkless and then suddenly were not. I resented that your miracle looked like self-destruction and everyone still called it potential. I resented that you were seen by the door I missed. I resented that part of me was happy for you and part of me wanted to ask why the world changed its mind for you and not me" Izuku's eyes filled. Ren continued because stopping there would make the confession crueler.
"I do not hate you. I do not want to resent you. I am trying not to let envy make decisions" Izuku looked down. His shoulders shook once. Not sobbing. Not yet. Ren added "You asked""I did""I answered""You did" Silence. Then Izuku said "I think I would resent me too" Ren's eyes narrowed.
"That was not the intended conclusion" Izuku wiped his face quickly with his sleeve.
"I know. Sorry" Ren stared. Izuku froze. Then corrected himself.
"Alive first" Ren nodded.
"Better" Izuku breathed shakily.
"I don't know how to carry this" Ren looked at him.
"The power?" Izuku's eyes sharpened with panic. Ren held up one hand.
"Not the name. Not the source. The this" Izuku exhaled.
"I don't either""That is more honest than your usual strategy""My usual strategy?"
"Muttering and breaking bones" Izuku gave a small, wounded laugh.
"That's not a strategy""Correct" Another silence. This one less sharp. Izuku looked toward Uraraka and Iida. They were pretending not to watch. Iida was doing it terribly. Uraraka was doing it kindly.
"They worry about me""Yes""I worry about them too""Yes""I worry about you" Ren turned. Izuku looked embarrassed but determined.
"I know you probably don't want that. But I do. When I saw you after USJ, I thought about how you were in General Studies and still ended up hurt, and I thought about how you warned someone, and I thought about the way you looked at the facility before we went in, and I think maybe you knew something was wrong" Ren did not move. Izuku was not Nezu. But he was not stupid. He had never been stupid. His notebooks had always been proof of that. Ren said "I suspected" Izuku's eyes searched his face.
"Was it one of your fragments?" The word landed quietly. Ren's pulse changed. Not too much. Enough.
"I told you about them?"
"When we talked before U. A. You didn't call them that, I think. But you said memory was unreliable. You said some things felt like patterns before evidence" Ren had forgotten he had said enough for Izuku to build a shelf for the truth. Of course he had. Izuku was made of shelves.
"Yes" Ren said Izuku's voice lowered.
"Do you get them about me?" Careful. Again. Always.
"Yes" Izuku swallowed.
"Are they bad?" Ren looked at the bandaged hand.
"Some" Izuku closed his eyes.
"Okay""That is not the correct response""What is?"
"I don't know" Izuku opened his eyes. Ren continued "They are incomplete. Not instructions. Not certainty. I have a reporting protocol now. I am not supposed to carry them alone or act on them alone" Izuku stared.
"Reporting protocol?"
"Yes""With Nezu?"
"And others""All Might?" Ren did not answer fast enough. Izuku understood too much. His voice became smaller.
"Oh" Ren said "I have not told him everything" Izuku looked at him.
"About me?"
"Yes""Why?"
"Because you are a person, not a file attached to his fear" Izuku went very still. Ren's mouth tightened. Too much again.
"I should not have phrased it that way""No" Izuku said quietly "You should have" That was not reassuring. Ren studied him. Izuku looked shaken. But not angry. Maybe he should have been.
"You know about his fear?" Izuku asked"I know enough to infer that he has one" Izuku looked away. The courtyard was too quiet. Ren could almost feel All Might's thin form in the absence between them. Izuku said "He carries a lot""Yes""So do you" Ren looked at him. Izuku's jaw tightened with a rare kind of stubbornness.
"That's not me accusing you. It's just true" Ren could not refute it efficiently. Annoying. Izuku continued "You told me not to be everywhere. Are you going to try to be?" Ren looked forward. There it was. The mirror. Green-haired, shaking, too earnest, too wounded, too willing to throw the same knife back with kinder hands.
"I have been instructed not to" Izuku waited. Ren sighed.
"I am trying not to" Izuku nodded.
"Okay""That is all?"
"I think trying matters" Ren gave him a flat look.
"You are biased""Yes" The answer came so quickly that Ren almost smiled. Izuku looked down at his hand again.
"Repeatability""Yes""Not ammunition""Yes""Alive before sorry""Yes""Not everywhere""Yes" He nodded slowly.
"I can work with those" Ren said "Do not turn them into a notebook titled rules for being allowed to exist" Izuku froze. Ren realized immediately. Too accurate. Izuku's expression confirmed it. Ren closed his eyes.
"Midoriya""I don't have that notebook""Not physically?" Izuku did not answer. Ren opened his eyes.
"I am familiar with invisible notebooks" That softened something. Izuku looked at him.
"You too?" Ren gave him a look. Izuku almost smiled.
"Right. Stupid question""No. Obvious answer""That is different?"
"Yes" Uraraka stood from the far bench and stretched with exaggerated casualness. Iida checked the time with exaggerated dignity. The ten minutes had become twenty-three. Ren had known. He had ignored it. That would be noted by several people. Izuku stood first. Then hesitated.
"Can I ask one more thing?"
"You can ask. I may refuse""That's fair" He looked nervous again, but differently now. Less guilt. More fear of wanting.
"If you see something about me. Something immediate. Will you tell me?" Ren looked at him. The easy answer was yes. The safe answer was no. The honest answer had structure.
"If telling you reduces risk, yes. If telling you increases risk, I tell the protocol channel first. If it concerns your Quirk and secrets that are not mine, I will not expose them without necessity" Izuku absorbed that. Then nodded.
"Okay""You accept that?"
"No" Ren raised an eyebrow. Izuku looked at him directly.
"But I understand it" That was better. Ren stood slowly. Izuku stepped forward automatically, then stopped himself. Good. Concern without grabbing. Progress. Ren adjusted his bag strap with care. Izuku watched. Then said "You said sometimes you resented me""Yes""I'm glad you told me""That is a strange response""It means it is not hiding between us as much" Ren considered that.
"Maybe""I don't want you to have to pretend""I am not promising full emotional disclosure" Izuku's mouth twitched.
"I know""Good" Uraraka and Iida rejoined them. Uraraka looked between their faces and seemed to decide not to ask if everything was okay. Smart. Iida, however, was Iida.
"Was the conversation productive?" Ren said "Define productive" Izuku said "Yes" Iida nodded, satisfied. Uraraka smiled slightly.
"No apologies first?" Izuku nodded.
"Alive first" Ren looked at her.
"Your adoption of the phrase is spreading" Uraraka blinked.
"Is that bad?"
"No" He paused.
"Uncontrolled but not bad" She grinned.
"That might be the nicest thing you've ever said to me""It was not calibrated as compliment""Still taking it" Iida turned toward Ren.
"Akiyama. I also wish to say that your correction regarding my name during the incident was appreciated" Ren stared. Izuku blinked. Uraraka looked confused. Iida placed one hand over his chest.
"In the shelter reports, Shinso referred to me as engine guy. You corrected him. In high-stress situations, maintaining identity through proper names can be stabilizing" Ren processed that. Then nodded.
"You are welcome, Iida" Iida's face brightened. Shinso would hate this. Naturally, Shinso appeared at the courtyard entrance at exactly that moment, as if summoned by potential irritation. He looked at the group. Then at Ren. Then at Izuku.
"I was told this was ten minutes" Ren said "It expanded" Shinso looked unimpressed.
"Things usually do around Midoriya" Izuku startled.
"Shinso""Alive?" Izuku blinked again. Then, to his credit, answered.
"Alive" Shinso nodded.
"Good. See? Conversation complete" Uraraka laughed. Iida adjusted his glasses. Ren said "That is reductive""Efficient""Incorrectly efficient" Shinso stepped into the courtyard, hands in pockets. He looked at Izuku with an expression that had not fully decided whether it wanted to be hostile, curious, or something else.
"You break bones, right?" Izuku went red. Uraraka said "Shinso!" Iida shouted "That is an inappropriate opening!" Ren closed his eyes briefly. Shinso looked at them.
"What? It's public knowledge from the entrance exam and USJ bandages" Izuku rubbed the back of his neck.
"Um. Sometimes" Ren said "Too often" Shinso's gaze flicked to him.
"So he gets the food speech too?" Izuku looked confused.
"The what?" Ren said "No" Uraraka said "Maybe yes" Iida nodded firmly.
"Nutrition is essential to recovery and Quirk development" Shinso looked at Ren.
"I like them less now" Ren said "Expected" Izuku looked between them. Something small and complicated moved across his face. Not jealousy. Not exactly. Recognition that Ren had people around him too. Maybe relief. Maybe sadness. Maybe both. Ren understood that poorly. Before anyone could make the moment sentimental, Bakugo's voice cut across the courtyard from the path.
"What the hell is this? Therapy club?" Everyone turned. Bakugo stood near the entrance with Kirishima half a step behind him and Kaminari farther back, both looking like they had failed to prevent this by social force alone. Bakugo's hands were in his pockets, shoulders tense, eyes sharp enough to make the air seem flammable. Izuku went stiff. Uraraka's face tightened. Iida straightened. Shinso's expression flattened into interest. Ren remained where he was. Bakugo's gaze moved over the group and landed on Ren.
"You collecting broken extras now?" Kirishima winced. Kaminari whispered "Dude" Ren looked at Bakugo. He could answer several ways. Mockery. Analysis. Silence. All were available. His ribs hurt. He was tired. He chose precision.
"No. There were no extras at USJ" The courtyard went silent. Bakugo's eyes narrowed. Ren continued "Only people in different locations with different information and different reach" Bakugo's jaw tightened. For a second, something ugly and almost vulnerable moved under his anger. Then he bared his teeth.
"Don't lecture me, General Studies" Shinso took one step forward. Ren said "No" Shinso stopped. Barely. Bakugo noticed that. His eyes flicked between them.
"You got a guard dog now?" Shinso smiled without warmth.
"Answer me and find out" Iida made a distressed sound. Uraraka said "Shinso, no" Bakugo's grin sharpened. Kirishima grabbed his shoulder.
"Bakugo, seriously" Ren stepped in before the entire situation became a disciplinary case with predictable participants.
"Sports Festival will answer more efficiently than courtyard escalation" Bakugo looked back at him. There. The word had landed. Sports Festival. Still under review publicly, but already alive inside everyone. Bakugo's eyes burned.
"You think you're getting that far?" Ren met his gaze.
"I think you are asking because USJ made the answer less obvious" Kaminari made a choking sound. Kirishima's grip tightened. Bakugo's face changed. Not explosion. Not yet. Worse. Focus.
"You better crawl your way there then" Ren said "Running is medically restricted" Uraraka made a strangled sound that might have been a laugh. Shinso's shoulders shook once. Izuku stared in horror. Bakugo looked like he had been denied the correct emotional outcome and hated everyone for it.
"Tch" He turned sharply.
"Kirishima. We're leaving" Kirishima gave them an apologetic grimace.
"Uh. Glad everyone's alive" Bakugo snapped "Stop saying that!" Kirishima followed him anyway. Kaminari hurried after them, whispering something about emotional timing. The courtyard breathed again. Iida said "That was dangerous" Ren said "Yes" Uraraka looked at him.
"You still did it""Yes" Shinso said "No sudden heroics, remember?"
"That was not heroic""It was sudden""Fair" Izuku was still looking toward the path Bakugo had taken. His expression was complicated. Ren watched him.
"You are going to apologize for him in your head" Izuku flinched.
"No" Ren waited.
"Maybe""Don't" Izuku looked at him.
"That is not yours either" Izuku's mouth closed. Then he nodded.
"Right" The bell for next transition sounded faintly from inside. Routine tone. No one flinched this time. Not visibly. Progress, maybe. Uraraka adjusted her bag.
"We should go" Iida nodded.
"Agreed. Akiyama, thank you again" Ren nodded.
"Alive first" Iida placed one hand over his chest again.
"Alive first" Uraraka smiled.
"Alive first" Izuku looked at Ren. The conversation was not finished. Not really. It probably would not be finished for months. Maybe years. He said "Alive first" Ren nodded.
"Repeatability second" Izuku's eyes sharpened with understanding.
"Yes""Not ammunition""Yes""Good" Shinso groaned.
"It's spreading" Uraraka laughed softly. They parted at the courtyard entrance. Izuku walked back with Uraraka and Iida, shoulders still heavy but less collapsed. Ren watched him go and tried not to see green lightning in the shape of every future step. Shinso stood beside him.
"You look terrible" Ren said "Physical or emotional?"
"Yes""Helpful""I try" They began walking toward the General Studies wing. Slowly, because Ren's ribs had started complaining in more organized paragraphs. Shinso matched his pace without comment. That was new enough to notice and kind enough not to name. After a while, Shinso said "You told him something real""Yes""Bad idea?"
"Probably""Necessary?"
"Probably" Shinso nodded.
"Annoying when those overlap""Yes" They reached the hallway where Kurose waited at the far end with her tablet. Of course she was there. Of course she knew. Ren wondered if U. A. had installed teacher summoning circles in the floor. Kurose looked at them.
"Your ten-minute conversation lasted thirty-one minutes" Ren said "It expanded" Shinso said "I tried to retrieve him""Unsuccessfully""Emotionally successful. Logistically delayed" Kurose stared at him. Shinso stared back. Kurose looked at Ren.
"Pain level""Ribs five. Manageable""Noted. Medical wing check before leaving" Ren almost objected. Hana's face appeared in memory. Recovery Girl's cane. Daichi's restriction paper. Alive first.
"Yes, sensei" Kurose's eyes narrowed slightly, as if the lack of argument worried her. Then she nodded.
"Good" There it was again. This time, Ren let it stand. As they walked toward the medical wing, his phone buzzed. Izuku. Thank you. I'm alive. I'll try to make it repeatable. Ren looked at the message for a long moment. Then typed: Trying is acceptable. Method is better. A second later: Also eat. He sent it. Shinso glanced over.
"You infected him" Ren put the phone away.
"Hana infected everyone" Shinso considered.
"Fair" Outside the window, U. A. continued to operate under watch, pressure, and the shadow of an event everyone wanted to process into meaning before it finished hurting. Ren walked slowly. Not because he had failed. Because today, slow was the method that kept him moving. And somewhere behind him, Izuku Midoriya was alive, guilty, powerful, frightened, and perhaps one rule closer to understanding that a body was not a receipt for courage. For now, that was enough. Not fixed. Not safe. Enough to repeat.
