Chương 80: Approved Is Not Safe

The second week of stability review began with a green day. Ren distrusted it immediately. No scar heat in the morning. No fragment association during breakfast. Sleep seven hours exactly, which made Hana look far too pleased and made Daichi check the number twice as if the clock had performed a civic duty. Appetite moderate. No nausea. No red-line memory during the commute. No camp pressure when someone mentioned packing lists near the school gate. No urge to overtrain strong enough to require intervention. Green.
Clean. Suspicious. Recovery Girl looked at the chart and narrowed her eyes.
"You look offended by physiological cooperation" Ren sat on the infirmary chair.
"Green feels like a trap" Shinso, sitting in the next chair with his own chart, nodded.
"Mine also had a green morning. I assume surveillance failure" Kurose stood by the desk, expression unreadable. Aizawa leaned against the wall with both eyes half-open, which was either fatigue or intense judgment. Recovery Girl tapped Ren's chart.
"Report the problem" Ren looked at the green row.
"Part of me wants to preserve it""Meaning?"
"If the day stays green, approval feels closer. That creates pressure not to report minor changes" Kurose wrote.
"Good" Ren looked at her.
"That is not good""It is trustworthy data about green performance risk" Shinso pointed at his own chart.
"I also have green performance risk. I wanted to write irritation as low because it looked cleaner" Aizawa said "What was it?"
"Moderate""Write moderate" Shinso did, with visible resentment. Recovery Girl sat back.
"Stable review does not mean collecting pretty days. We said this" Ren exhaled.
"The pretty day made it harder""Correct. Green can be a trigger if you turn it into a trophy" Ren hated that. He wrote in the margin: Green is not a trophy. Kurose saw.
"Add action" Ren added: Report changes even if they ruin the row. Shinso leaned over. Then wrote on his own sheet: Do not lie for aesthetic stability. Aizawa looked at the sentence.
"Keep that one" Shinso stared.
"You approved my phrasing?"
"Do not make it sentimental""Never" The green day did not stay green. That was the point. At lunch, Midoriya approached Ren with a notebook in both hands and the careful expression of someone carrying something fragile and possibly explosive. He stopped one step away from the table, looked at Kurose across the room, looked back at Ren, then held up the notebook without opening it.
"May I ask one camp-related question?" Ren felt Shinso's attention sharpen beside him. Uraraka, sitting across from them, lowered her chopsticks. Iida straightened. Todoroki looked over from the end of the table. Yaoyorozu paused mid-note. Bakugo, three seats away because mixed tables had become inevitable and no one knew how to classify them anymore, glanced over like he was pretending not to. Ren checked himself first. No heat. A little pressure.
"Question category?" Midoriya swallowed.
"Support boundaries. Not fragments. Not medical details. Not your restrictions unless you choose" Good. Learned. Kurose, still across the room, did not intervene. Ren nodded.
"Yes" Midoriya opened the notebook to a page with almost no writing on it. This was alarming.
"I am trying to make sure I do not become a guilt entanglement risk" Bakugo snorted.
"What the hell does that mean?" Kurose's voice carried from across the room.
"It means Midoriya read his support note" Bakugo pointed in her direction without looking.
"Stop hearing paperwork" Midoriya's ears were red, but he did not close the notebook.
"I know I am not a peer anchor candidate except for limited supervised reflection. That is probably correct" Ren said "Yes" Midoriya flinched less than expected. Good.
"I want to ask what helps without making you feel like I am trying to save you from the consequences of wanting to go" The table went quiet. Not awkward. Attentive. Ren looked at Midoriya's page. There were three headings. ASK DO NOT ASSUME DO NOT APOLOGIZE AS REPAIR Arai's influence, clearly. Ren considered. The green day was no longer green. Social load rising. No heat. Report.
"Yellow. Social load. No heat. Question acceptable" Shinso nodded beside him. Ren answered.
"Ask status once. Accept the answer. If I report yellow-red or heat, do not make a face like you caused it unless you did cause it. Do not apologize to my condition. If I say stop, help make room for staff, not meaning" Midoriya wrote slowly.
"Help make room for staff, not meaning" Bakugo muttered "Everyone here talks like an exam prompt" Todoroki said "It was clear" Bakugo glared at him. Ren continued "If you want to help, know your own thresholds. If you break yourself near me, I will have extra data and probably extra guilt" Midoriya's pencil stopped. That hit. Good. Needed. Uraraka leaned forward.
"That applies to all of us, right?" Ren looked at her.
"Yes" Iida nodded.
"If we wish to be part of a support structure, we must not make our own instability invisible" Shinso said "That sounded official" Iida looked pleased and concerned.
"Was it too much?"
"No. Unfortunately useful" Yaoyorozu added "Support cannot be built from people pretending they require none" The table absorbed that. Bakugo looked disgusted. But not dismissive. Ren's chart for lunch later read: You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author. Green changed to yellow after support-boundary conversation. Reported. No heat. Midoriya asked before assuming. Table support load moderate but useful. Recovery Girl circled green changed to yellow.
"Good" Ren did not object. Progress, possibly. Tuesday brought the terrain module. Not real forest. Not yet. Gym Beta had been transformed into a controlled terrain simulation with padded slopes, artificial roots, textured paths, low visibility screens, and sound effects that were intentionally mediocre so no one could mistake them for real wilderness. Thirteen supervised. Cementoss adjusted terrain blocks. Kurose observed.
Aizawa had Hero Course in another area, but he appeared at random intervals because physics and his schedule obeyed different laws. Ren's approved task was low-risk terrain mapping from a safe route. No running. No climbing. No red-zone entry. No Scar Tension. No rescue extraction. Just map, call, and identify hazard language. Shinso walked a parallel route with Arai and Kenta, practicing obstruction and assistance calls.
Uraraka and Iida joined for one block because their camp support profiles intersected with Ren's: body-limit reporting and route discipline. The artificial roots were terrible. Not as obstacles. As symbols. They crossed the path like questions. Too easy to step over. Too easy to catch on. Too easy to imagine at night. Ren stopped before the third root cluster. No heat. Pressure drop. Branch crack. Not new. Not stronger. He opened his hands.
"Yellow-red. Terrain association. No heat. Branch-crack memory. Artificial root cluster trigger. Request pause" Thirteen turned immediately.
"Pause granted" Kurose wrote. Iida stopped one step behind him. Uraraka stopped too, hands open. Shinso, on the parallel route, looked over but did not approach. Good. Not crowd. Ren breathed. Three breaths. The pressure remained. Not worse.
"Status update. Yellow. Association decreasing. No image. Continue with modified call" Kurose nodded.
"Proceed" Ren did not step over the roots first. He turned to Iida.
"Route call" Iida looked at the cluster. Then said "Root cluster requires single-file slow step. No speed. No carrying across until footing tested. Alternate path left if visibility low" Ren nodded.
"Good. I follow after Uraraka" Uraraka stepped first, lightly, then turned.
"Footing stable but annoying""Useful description" She smiled. Ren stepped over the roots. Nothing happened. This was both anticlimactic and exhausting. He wrote later: Terrain trigger reported. Pause worked. Continued after someone else tested route. No heat. Trust increased. Annoyance moderate. Kurose read it and said "This is strong data" Ren looked at the sentence. Strong. Not pretty. Strong. On Wednesday, the Pussycats returned by remote briefing. Pixie-Bob again called Ren tiny serious kitten.
Ren wrote: Social metaphor irritation. No heat. Possible permanent psychological damage. Shinso wrote: Peer anchor morale threatened by cat taxonomy. Kurose confiscated neither note. This was suspicious. Mandalay explained camp communication protocols. Students would have restricted devices. Emergency channels would exist. Conditional students would carry redundant check-in tags. Staff would receive pre-set status codes.
Students were forbidden from wandering, testing boundaries, visiting other groups unsupervised, or turning training into personal duels. Everyone looked at Bakugo. Bakugo shouted "I am sitting right here!" Aizawa said "Preventive glare" Kaminari whispered "That is a real tool now" Sero whispered "It always was" Mandalay continued with calm professional force.
"Forest terrain creates visibility, sound, and route problems. A student who runs ahead can be lost even if physically strong. A student who hides strain can become an extraction problem. A student who ignores group route can endanger others" Ren wrote each sentence. Not too much. Just enough. Then came conditional schedules. Ren's preliminary camp day one: Arrival. Status check. Orientation from safe zone. Terrain route observation. Lunch. Rest block. Hazard communication drill. Recovery report.
Evening indoor tabletop. No night training. No night training. He read it twice. Good. Disappointing. Good. Shinso's day one: Arrival. Status check. Cross-Course movement observation. Capture-weapon fundamentals with Aizawa in cleared zone. Rest block. Verbal ethics drill. Peer awareness block if both cleared. No external route after dusk. Shinso leaned over.
"They gave me fundamentals at camp" Ren said "That is good""It is humiliating""Also good?"
"Do not" Iida reviewed his own schedule and looked satisfied by the route briefings. Uraraka was excited about rescue terrain despite trying not to show it. Midoriya was assigned additional controlled movement and a supervised check-in with All Might that had no training escalation written in bold, probably by Recovery Girl. Todoroki's schedule included heat regulation and small-area environmental control. Bakugo's included directional blast control near terrain hazards.
He looked like someone had been cursed in administrative language. Ren's chart entry: Camp schedule received. Yellow-high. Hope and disappointment. No heat. No image. No night training accepted. Recovery Girl circled disappointment.
"You report it because otherwise it becomes compensation""I know""Say the action""No compensation. No secret night training. No treating exclusion as insult""Good" He disliked that she always knew where the knives were. On Thursday, Nezu called a security briefing. Only staff and conditional students with relevant clearance attended. That meant Ren, Shinso, Kurose, Aizawa, Recovery Girl by secure feed, Thirteen, and one security staff member whose name Ren was not told because U. A.
had begun treating information like medication with side effects. Nezu appeared on the main screen.
"The camp location remains restricted. Students will receive destination information shortly before departure. Travel route will use staged disclosures. Communication will be controlled. Public-facing school calendars contain no location data" Ren listened. No heat. Still. Garaki's unseen file did not exist in his mind as a name. But the feeling of being watched did. He reported.
"Yellow. External attention concern. No heat. No fragment" Nezu nodded.
"Trustworthy data" The security staff explained route secrecy, bus assignments, staff distribution, and emergency extraction procedures. Conditional students would not sit alone. Ren would sit near a staff aisle, not by the rear emergency exit unless assigned, because exit proximity could become either comfort or trap depending on trigger state. Shinso would sit within awareness range but not automatically beside him unless both agreed that morning. That detail mattered. Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso noticed.
"Conditional seating consent too?" Kurose answered "Yes" Shinso looked at the ceiling.
"Everything is consent now" Aizawa said "You complained when it was not""I am allowed to dislike getting what I asked for""Accurate" The emergency extraction plan was the hardest part. Three categories. Local pause. Block removal. Camp removal. Local pause meant activity stops, staff checks, possible continuation. Block removal meant Ren leaves the current training block, recovery check, reassessment. Camp removal meant departure from camp to designated medical or guardian transfer route.
Hana and Daichi would receive the same plan at final guardian review. Ren read the third category. Camp removal. The door could close after opening. His chest tightened. No heat.
"Status. Yellow-high. Camp removal page trigger. No heat. Fear of losing access. Recognition of need" Kurose wrote. Recovery Girl said through the monitor "Good" Nezu said "A door that cannot close is not consent. It is a trap" Ren wrote that down. Aizawa stared at the monitor.
"Again with the sentences" Nezu smiled.
"I have many" Shinso whispered "Dangerous" Ren whispered "Useful""Worst category" By Friday, the chart had no perfect days. It had green mornings, yellow lunches, yellow-red terrain trigger, one mild heat report, two social load spikes, one camp schedule disappointment, one external attention concern, no concealed triggers, no unapproved training, no sleep below six hours after Tuesday, and one home note from Hana reading: He reported fear before we asked.
He was angry after schedule review and did not train to answer the anger. Trust increased. Recovery Girl read the week summary. Then read it again. Then placed the chart flat on the desk.
"Medically, I hate approving things" Ren sat very still. Shinso, beside him for his own clearance block, also went still. Recovery Girl continued "Fortunately for your future, my hatred is not the criterion" Kurose's eyes did not move from the chart. Aizawa's arms crossed. Nezu watched from the monitor. Recovery Girl tapped the paper.
"Ren Akiyama. Week two stability review supports conditional camp participation with restrictions" Ren did not breathe for one second. Then did.
"Status" Kurose said"Yellow-high. Relief. Fear. No heat. No fragment. Hope spike" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Hope spike is not a reason to do push-ups""I know""Say action""Sit. Report. No compensation""Good" Shinso's result followed. Aizawa spoke this time.
"Hitoshi Shinso. Stability review supports conditional camp participation with restrictions. No external field clearance. No unsupervised route. Peer awareness participation approved only within assigned blocks and only with daily consent" Shinso stared at him. Then looked at the chart. Then back.
"Status" Aizawa said Shinso's throat moved.
"Yellow-high. Relief. Suspicion. Wanting to act like it does not matter. No Quirk pressure. Social debt trigger low. Personal want present" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Shinso did not object. That was how Ren knew it mattered. Nezu folded his paws.
"Final guardian review remains this afternoon. If guardian consent is received and no new threshold event occurs, both candidates will be added to the camp roster under conditional status" Camp roster. The words landed with weight. Not Hero Course. Not transfer. Not proof. Roster. A list of people going. Ren's hands were open on his knees. No heat. He looked at Shinso. Shinso looked back. Neither smiled. That would have been too easy. The final guardian review took place at 16: 00.
Hana and Daichi arrived with Bentaro, three folders, and the kind of calm that had clearly been assembled in pieces and carried carefully. Shinso's guardian situation was handled in a separate channel first; U. A. had obtained required permissions through approved procedure, with Aizawa and Kurose documenting temporary school-supervised camp participation and emergency contacts. The details were not Ren's to ask for. Shinso did not offer them.
But when he entered the joint final section, he looked tired and strangely upright. Not fixed. Never fixed. Present. Kurose reviewed the final conditions. Ren's role. Shinso's role. Peer awareness not sole responsibility. Rotating support. Emergency extraction. Medical authority. Guardian contacts. No deliberate Quirk provocation. No unsupervised routes. No night movement. Daily consent check. Daily status check. Daily recovery report. Camp approval could be withdrawn. Hana asked three questions. Daichi asked four.
None were soft. All were needed. Hana asked "If he wants to stay after you decide removal, who tells him no?" Recovery Girl said "I do" Kurose said "And I do" Aizawa said "And if needed, I physically remove him" Ren looked at him. Aizawa looked back.
"I am not making it metaphorical" Daichi nodded.
"Good" Ren did not know how to feel about his father being comforted by the credible threat of teacher abduction. Probably grateful. Probably offended. Both. Hana looked at Ren.
"Do you still want to go under these conditions?" The room waited. Ren looked at the folder. At the camp role. At the extraction plan. At Shinso sitting two chairs away, not assigned to him, not owned by him, conditionally willing. At Recovery Girl, ready to close the door if his body made the answer wrong. At Kurose, ready to document fear without making it failure. At Aizawa, ready to drag him out if needed. At Nezu, watching the structure more than the hope.
At Daichi, afraid and trying not to make fear into a lock. At Hana, who would rather have him angry on the couch than brave in a forest after the warning got clearer. He answered.
"Yes. Conditional yes" Hana's eyes filled. She nodded. Daichi closed his eyes briefly. Then opened them.
"We consent under these conditions" Kurose wrote. Recovery Girl signed first. Kurose signed second. Aizawa signed as supervising staff. Nezu authorized from the monitor. Hana signed. Daichi signed. Ren signed last. His hand did not shake. No heat. The form read: CONDITIONAL CAMP PARTICIPATION APPROVED Ren stared at it. Approved. Not safe. Approved. Not destiny. Approved. Not proof. Approved because the data had been trustworthy enough to move. Shinso signed his own form afterward. His hand did shake once.
He glared at it. Then signed anyway. Aizawa saw. Did not comment. Good. When the forms were filed, no one applauded. That was right. Hana hugged Ren only after asking. Daichi placed one hand on his shoulder and said nothing for several seconds. Then "Approved is not safe" Ren looked at him. Daichi's voice was steady.
"But no is not the only way to love you" The sentence hit harder than any approval stamp. Hana looked away. Shinso looked at the floor. Aizawa suddenly found the wall interesting. Kurose wrote nothing. Recovery Girl pretended to check a medical note. Ren nodded once. Because speaking was not available. Outside the conference room, the hallway felt different. Not brighter. Not easier. Different. Shinso walked beside Ren, folder under one arm.
"So" Ren said "So""We are on the roster""Yes""Conditionally""Yes""Tiny serious kitten and suspicious wet scarf go to camp" Ren stopped walking.
"No" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Yes""I will request revision""Denied""You are not staff""I am peer awareness adjacent""That gives you no authority""Trustworthy data suggests otherwise" Ren stared. Then laughed. Quiet. Surprised. Real. Shinso looked startled by it. Then looked away.
"Awful sound" Ren almost smiled again.
"Good enough" At home, dinner was not a celebration. It was a marking. Hana made too much food. Daichi set an extra place without discussing it. Shinso stayed because the route clearly held. Bentaro dried near the door though it had not rained. The conditional approval form sat in the center of the table for exactly one minute before Hana moved it away.
"Food first. Documents after" Ren ate. Shinso ate. Daichi explained that he had not opened the packing list beyond socks and medical forms. Hana admitted she had opened it to towels. Ren said "That seems reasonable" Hana said "It was not. I closed it before panic bought six" Shinso looked up.
"Six towels?"
"Minimum emotional number" Daichi nodded gravely. Ren covered his face. This was family. This was ridiculous. This was evidence too. Later, Ren opened his notebook. He wrote: Approved is not safe. Then: Approved means the structure can hold movement for now. Then: No is not the only way to love me. He stopped. The third line hurt too much to expand. So he did not. Across the table, Shinso wrote his own three lines and did not show them until he was done. Roster is not belonging. Conditional still counts.
I wanted this for me too. Ren read the last line twice. Then nodded.
"Good" Shinso did not object. Outside, in a place with no rain and too many screens, Garaki received a message through a channel that never used school names when categories would do. Student movement confirmed. Summer training relocation window approaching. Roster includes high-interest structural-response subject. Location pending. Garaki smiled.
"Stable enough" He opened the file. Akiyama Ren. Conditional external movement. Medical supervision high. Peer structure present. Difficult. Not impossible. He added one note. Movement creates contact surfaces. Then he closed the file and turned toward the tank behind him. The shape inside shifted. Not ready. Not yet. Soon enough. At the Akiyama apartment, Ren did not know any of that. He only knew the form had been signed. The chart had held. The green days had not stayed green and had been better for it.
The door had opened a little further. It had locks. It had hinges. It had people on both sides. It could still close. That was why the yes remained real. Ren turned off the light. His scars stayed cool. For tonight, approved was not safe. But it was honest. And honest, for now, was stable enough to sleep on.
