Chương 38: The Bracket
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 160 chương · ~41 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The break after the Cavalry Battle was not rest. It was rearrangement. Bodies cooled. Adrenaline soured. Medical staff moved through the participant area with water bottles, tablets, portable scanners, and the calm impatience of professionals who had seen too many teenagers mistake survival for clearance. Students who had advanced stood too still or moved too much. Students who had failed tried to decide whether losing meant they were allowed to feel relieved. Camera drones hovered outside restricted angles.
Screens replayed the last minute of the Cavalry Battle again and again, turning choices made under pressure into entertainment with slow motion and commentary. Ren Akiyama sat in the temporary medical rest area with a hydration bottle in his right hand, his yellow card on the chair beside him, and his ribs reminding him with every breath that fourth place had cost something even if it had not crossed red. Ribs five immediately post-event. Four after seated rest. Breathing stable.
Scar quiet after the brief heat spike near Todoroki. No dizziness. Right palm abrasion unchanged. Leg fatigue normal. Emotional state more difficult to classify. The screen outside showed the final Cavalry standings again. 1st — Team Midoriya. 2nd — Team Todoroki. 3rd — Team Bakugo. 4th — Team Akiyama. Team Akiyama. The phrase looked wrong. Not because it was false. Because it made him a center.
Kenta sat two chairs away, towel over his head, muttering something into the fabric that sounded like a prayer and a complaint fighting for the same mouth. Arai sat in the quiet corner with her dampeners still on, hands loose now, color slowly returning to her face. Shinso sat beside Ren with one knee drawn up on the chair, bottle unopened in his hand, expression blank enough to fool no one who had survived the last week with him.
Sano sat backward on a chair opposite them because elimination had apparently freed him from conventional furniture ethics.
"You know" Sano said "Team No would have been a better official name" Kenta's towel moved.
"No""That was agreement?"
"That was refusal""Same syllable. Different spirit" Shinso stared at his bottle.
"Why are you still here?" Sano placed a hand over his chest.
"Emotional support""You are emotionally exhausting""Support has range" Arai said from the quiet corner "Some forms should be medically discouraged" Sano pointed at her.
"Betrayal" Ren drank water. Correct amount. Small sip. No nausea. Good. Annoying. Kenta pulled the towel down and looked at Ren.
"Stop staring at the scoreboard like it's going to sue you" Ren lowered the bottle.
"It says Team Akiyama""It was your team""Names create framing" Sano groaned.
"Not now" Shinso said "It's a terrible name" Ren looked at him. Shinso continued.
"Should have been Team No" Kurose appeared at the entrance to the rest area.
"No" Sano threw both hands up.
"She's everywhere!" Kurose walked in without apology. She looked at Arai first.
"Status" Arai opened her eyes.
"Yellow resolving. Noise manageable. Mild headache. No red""Good. Stay seated five more minutes""Yes, sensei""Kenta" He straightened.
"Green-yellow. Arms dead. No injury. Pride unstable""Hydrate""Yes, sensei""Shinso""Green-yellow. Throat dry. Quirk use controlled. Emotional irritation high but not operational""Bottle open" He looked at the unopened bottle. Then opened it. Kurose's gaze moved to Ren.
"Report""Ribs four from five. Breathing stable. Scar quiet now. Brief localized heat during field shift toward Todoroki and again after visual contact in finish area. No spread. No fever. No dizziness. Yellow-high during final minute, now yellow""Medical logged?"
"Yes""Recovery Girl?"
"Remote notification sent" As if summoned by bureaucracy, Ren's phone buzzed. Recovery Girl. If you turn yellow into red for drama, I will disqualify you myself. Ren showed Kurose. Kurose read it.
"Clear and concise" Shinso leaned over. Ren moved the phone away.
"Privacy" Sano said "Medical threats are public interest" Kurose looked at him. He sat normally. For three seconds. Kurose stood before the group.
"You advanced" No one spoke.
"You advanced without major injury, without disqualification, without unethical Quirk use, and without turning the ten-million-point target into your personal moral responsibility" Ren looked down. Shinso looked at the wall. Kenta made a small sound under the towel. Arai's eyes opened fully. Kurose continued.
"That matters" The sentence landed differently than commentary. Commentary turned it outward. Kurose made it internal. Ren disliked both for different reasons. Sano lifted one hand.
"I did not advance, but I also did not die" Kurose looked at him.
"That also matters" He blinked. The grin vanished. Then returned weaker and stranger.
"Great. Officially alive""Good" He looked away fast. Kurose's expression softened by almost nothing.
"Bracket announcement in twelve minutes. Advancing students report to the central stage area when called. Eliminated students may observe from the participant section or medical rest area. If any of you attempt to hide a red condition because the bracket looks dramatic, I will make the drama administrative" Kenta whispered "That sounds worse than death""It is" She left. Sano watched her go.
"Do you think she sleeps?" Shinso drank water.
"No" Ren looked at the scoreboard again. Fourth. Fourth team. Not enough to be safe. Enough to be undeniable. The tournament would narrow everything. No teams. No crowd routes. No using the field as cover. One opponent. One ring. One set of eyes, multiplied by thousands. The body as argument. He closed his hand around the bottle. Not today. No. Today. But not yet. A staff member called the advancing teams. Ren stood slowly. Ribs four. Stable. Shinso stood beside him. Kenta rolled his shoulders and winced.
Arai removed one dampener, then put it back in place after the stadium noise surged through the corridor. A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation. Kenta looked at her.
"You can stay here if you need to" Arai shook her head.
"I advanced. I want to hear it myself""Okay" Sano stood too. Kurose, from the doorway without turning, said "Sano, you are eliminated but may accompany them to the participant section. Do not make this about your knee" Sano froze. Then lowered his raised foot.
"I was not""You were""Yes, sensei" They walked toward the central stage entrance. The stadium sounded different after the Cavalry Battle. Not louder exactly. More focused. The audience had names now. Stories. Targets. Questions. Could Midoriya survive the bracket after taking first? Would Todoroki crush everyone? Would Bakugo explode through the tournament out of sheer rage? What would the dark horse teams mean? Could General Studies actually compete directly? Ren felt those questions before hearing them.
They existed in the way camera rigs turned, the way commentators repeated clips, the way the crowd sections reacted when certain students appeared at the tunnel mouths. Arai walked beside him.
"Different noise""Yes""Less broad. More pointed" Ren nodded.
"Attention has acquired shape" Shinso muttered "You two make sound creepy" Arai said "It is""Fair" They emerged into the arena. The sunlight had shifted. The stage platform had been raised in the center of the field. Sixteen students would advance to the tournament bracket. The system had taken the top teams and now had to resolve individual entries from them. Since Team Akiyama had four members, all four advanced. That fact alone made several spectators murmur when their names were announced. Ren Akiyama.
Shinso Hitoshi. Mori Kenta. Arai Mei. General Studies had four students in the tournament. Four. Not one oddity. Not a single exception. A section of the crowd cheered harder than before. The General Studies section. Maybe classmates. Maybe parents. Maybe people who liked disruptions in hierarchy more than they liked the students causing them. Ren tried not to look toward the family seating. Failed. He found them after three seconds. Hana stood with both hands clasped in front of her mouth.
Daichi stood beside her, one hand on her shoulder, the other holding a small pair of binoculars he absolutely had brought after researching stadium visibility. Ren stared. Daichi lifted one hand. Not too high. Not a spectacle. A signal. Green? Ren touched two fingers briefly to his chest, then lowered them. Stable. Hana's shoulders dropped visibly. Ren looked away before the camera could make it sentimental. Too late. Probably. Present Mic's voice burst across the stadium.
"WE'RE DOWN TO SIXTEEN! That's right! Sixteen first-years fought their way through robots, canyons, mines, and one absolutely wild Cavalry Battle! Now the team games are over! It's time for head-to-head combat!" The crowd roared. Head-to-head. Ren felt his ribs tighten. He breathed. Aizawa's voice followed, tired and flat.
"Medical staff remain authorized to stop matches. So do referees. Winning by ignoring injury is not impressive" Present Mic laughed.
"Straight from Eraser Head, folks! Stay alive, stay legal, stay interesting!" Ren looked toward the commentary booth this time. The glass was too reflective. He could not see Aizawa clearly. But the voice existed. Alive enough to judge them. Good. The bracket board appeared on the giant screen as an empty structure. Sixteen names. No pairings yet. Midnight stepped onto the platform to explain the draw with more theatricality than the situation medically deserved. The crowd cheered.
Several students looked uncomfortable. Sano, from the participant section, looked delighted and horrified. Midnight held a small remote.
"The bracket will be randomized from our sixteen advancing competitors! No team protection! No department protection! No mercy from fate!" Shinso leaned toward Ren.
"That woman enjoys punctuation" Ren said "Excessively" Kenta whispered "I'm going to throw up" Arai said "Please don't" The names began to appear. First slot. Midoriya Izuku. The crowd surged. Izuku, standing near Uraraka and Tokoyami, went stiff. He had already been first once today. The system was not done making him a target. Second slot appeared after a dramatic pause. Shinso Hitoshi. The stadium reaction shifted. Not as loud. Sharper. Some cheers. Some murmurs.
A wave of recognition from the earlier commentary. Brainwashing. Emergency Rescue Support. Villainous Quirk? Heroic application? Public curiosity tasted worse than fear. Shinso went completely still. Ren looked at him. Shinso's eyes were on the bracket. Midoriya vs Shinso. There it was. A match the world thought it understood too quickly. Quirkless-born miracle against the boy with the voice everyone feared. Izuku turned toward Shinso from across the platform. Their eyes met. Izuku looked nervous. Determined.
Not disgusted. That mattered. Shinso's mouth curled, but there was no real amusement in it. Present Mic shouted.
"FIRST MATCH! MIDORIYA IZUKU FROM HERO COURSE 1-A AGAINST SHINSO HITOSHI FROM GENERAL STUDIES 1-C! The first-place racer versus the voice that turned the Cavalry Battle into a minefield of conversation!" Aizawa said "Midoriya should not answer him" Present Mic laughed.
"That's the obvious advice! Let's see if obvious is easy!" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren said nothing. No advice now. Not in public. Not with cameras. Shinso looked away. But his shoulders had changed. Less locked. A little. The bracket continued. Third slot. Bakugo Katsuki. Fourth. Uraraka Ochako. Uraraka's face went pale, then determined. Bakugo grinned like the universe had offered him something breakable. Izuku looked alarmed for Uraraka. She lifted a hand toward him without looking away from the board.
Do not intervene. Good. Fifth slot. Iida Tenya. Sixth. Mori Kenta. Kenta's eyes widened.
"Iida?" Sano shouted from the side "RUN, SHOULDER BOY!" Kenta yelled back "NOT HELPING!" Iida turned toward Kenta and bowed sharply.
"I look forward to an honorable match!" Kenta looked like he wanted to respect him and escape him simultaneously. Seventh slot. Tokoyami Fumikage. Eighth. Arai Mei. Arai's breath caught. Tokoyami turned toward her, composed. Dark Shadow stirred faintly at his shoulder. Arai swallowed. Ren leaned slightly toward her.
"Status""Yellow. Not red""Good" She nodded. Ninth slot. Todoroki Shoto. Ren knew before the tenth appeared. The future did not always show images. Sometimes it removed surprise. His scar heated. A line of fire beneath old burn tissue. Localized. Contained. Breath still present. Yellow. The tenth slot flashed. Akiyama Ren. The stadium noise changed. Not louder than Midoriya. Not sharper than Shinso. Different. Because the pairing made a shape even the crowd could understand.
Todoroki Shoto, Hero Course prodigy, son of power and silence, second-place finisher. Akiyama Ren, General Studies strategist, USJ survivor, fourth-team rider, student who kept advancing without showing a Quirk anyone could name. A mismatch. A story. A possible execution. Present Mic's voice exploded.
"AND THERE IT IS! TODOROKI SHOTO OF CLASS 1-A AGAINST AKIYAMA REN OF CLASS 1-C! Ice and firepower against the General Studies tactician! Folks, this bracket is not playing nice!" Aizawa's voice entered after half a beat.
"Akiyama needs to know when to stop" The sentence was not commentary. It was a warning. Ren heard it. So did Kurose. So did Hana, probably, wherever she stood in the family section with Daichi's hand on her shoulder. Todoroki looked at Ren. Across the platform, through the noise, his expression remained calm. Too calm. No arrogance. No cruelty. No interest in spectacle. Ren's scar pulsed once. Yellow-high. Not spreading. Present. Stadium. Bracket announcement. Todoroki across platform. Not match. Not ice. Not yet.
Shinso stepped closer, not enough for cameras to call it support.
"Card" Ren reached into his pocket and touched yellow.
"Yellow""Report?"
"After bracket""Now?"
"Not red""Don't make me drag you to Kurose""You could not""I'd call your mother" Ren breathed out.
"Effective threat""Good" The bracket continued, but Ren heard it through distance. Yaoyorozu Momo vs Sero Hanta. Kaminari Denki vs Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu from 1-B, who had advanced through another team. Ashido Mina vs Kirishima Eijiro. Hatsume Mei vs someone from Support who seemed immediately delighted and terrified. Monoma Neito vs Sano did not happen because Sano had not advanced, which was probably fortunate for everyone's language discipline. The exact final bracket filled the screen. Sixteen names. Lines.
Paths. If Ren somehow beat Todoroki, his next likely opponent would be the winner of the Iida-Kenta side depending on bracket structure? No. The lines shifted. He looked again. No. He would face the winner of Tokoyami vs Arai. That meant if he advanced, he might face Arai. General Studies survival created General Studies collision. The system enjoyed efficient cruelty. Ren looked at Arai. She had seen too. Her face was pale but steady.
"If you beat him" she said "and I beat Tokoyami" Ren said "Then we compete" Her mouth tightened.
"Yes" Not betrayal. Not cruelty. Competition. Kurose had said to resist the story where classmates became background obstacles. That did not make them not obstacles. It meant they remained people while blocking the path. The students were dismissed from the platform after the bracket filled. The crowd continued roaring over possible matchups, commentators already spinning narratives. Screens displayed headshots and department labels. General Studies appeared multiple times now. Not invisible.
Ren walked toward the participant tunnel. His steps were steady. Ribs four. Scar yellow. Mind too sharp. Shinso walked beside him.
"You got Todoroki""Yes""You knew""Suspected""Fragment""Yes" Shinso looked ahead.
"I got Midoriya""Yes""You knew?"
"No" Shinso looked at him. Ren met his eyes.
"I did not know" Shinso nodded.
"Good""You wanted a clean chance" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"Nothing clean about it. He's first place. Hero Course. All Might's favorite whether anyone says it or not. Breaks himself and gets called inspiring. Answers people because he can't help trying to understand them" Ren looked forward.
"That last part is a vulnerability""Yes""Do not exploit it cruelly" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"You think I don't know that?"
"I think you know and may still want to punish what he represents" The tunnel swallowed some of the stadium noise. Shinso stopped walking. Ren stopped too. Behind them, students flowed around, some staring, some pretending not to. Cameras were not permitted in the tunnel beyond a marked line. Shinso's voice was low.
"He got the miracle" Ren said nothing. Shinso's jaw tightened.
"He got the door. You got the obsession. I got the warning label. So yes, maybe I want to make him answer for how easy the crowd makes it look" Ren looked at him.
"And?" Shinso's eyes flashed.
"And that is red if it becomes punishment" Ren held his gaze. The anger remained. But it had shape. Good. Painful. Good. Ren nodded.
"Then win in green-yellow" Shinso looked away.
"You too" Ren almost smiled.
"Todoroki is not Midoriya""No. He's worse for you""Yes" Shinso looked back.
"Do not turn him into proof""I know""Demonstrate" Ren breathed in.
"Todoroki is an opponent. Not destiny. Objective is to make faculty evaluate honestly. Advancement if safe. Stop if red. No damage for recognition. No forcing Scar Tissue to answer because crowd is watching" Shinso stared.
"Scar Tissue" Ren went still. He had said it. Out loud. Not for the first time in his life. But here. In U. A. In the Sports Festival tunnel. To Shinso. The words hung between them. Shinso did not mock them. He did not ask whether that was official. He did not look afraid. He looked at Ren's bandaged arm. Then at his face.
"That's what you call it?" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes" Shinso nodded slowly.
"Good name" The words struck too deeply. Ren looked away.
"It is not official""Neither was rescue support until someone wrote it correctly" Ren looked back. Shinso's face was serious. Annoyingly serious.
"Then make them write it correctly" Ren had no answer. The tunnel noise shifted as Kurose approached. Of course. She looked at Ren first.
"Medical""Yes""Now""Yes" She looked at Shinso.
"You too. Not medical. Ethical check" Shinso groaned.
"Can we call it something less humiliating?"
"No""Of course" The ethical check took place in a side room with Kurose, Shinso, and a tablet that made everything feel worse. Ren underwent medical check in the adjacent station while Recovery Girl participated through video call. The school had apparently decided that his Todoroki pairing required maximum adult inconvenience. Recovery Girl's face filled the tablet.
"Report" Ren gave it.
"Scar heat localized after bracket. No spread. No fever. Yellow-high. Ribs four. Breathing stable. No dizziness. Present orientation maintained" Recovery Girl stared through the screen.
"Emotional?"
"Fear high. Visibility desire high. Proof-seeking risk elevated. Stop conditions accessible" Medical staff looked at him strangely. Recovery Girl did not.
"Good. Ugly honesty is useful" Ren disliked how often honesty had become a treatment category. She continued.
"You are cleared to remain in the tournament pending recheck before match. If scar heat spreads, red. If rib pain spikes before match, recheck. If you hide symptoms, I will find out and become legendary""I believe you""You should" The call ended. Kurose entered two minutes later with Shinso behind her. He looked irritated. Therefore not destroyed. Good. Kurose looked at Ren.
"Cleared?"
"Conditional""Meaning?"
"Yellow monitored. Recheck pre-match. No red signs""Good" She turned to both.
"Your matches are dangerous for different reasons. Shinso, Midoriya will likely answer if emotionally engaged. Winning through that is legal within match context. Turning his empathy into humiliation is not" Shinso looked at the floor.
"Yes, sensei""Akiyama, Todoroki outclasses you in raw output. You know this""Yes""Say it" Ren's jaw tightened.
"Todoroki outclasses me in raw output""Again""Todoroki outclasses me in raw output""And?"
"Winning is unlikely through force""And?"
"Taking damage will not change that into a good plan""And?" Ren looked at her. The sentence resisted. Then came.
"If I cannot continue safely, losing is required" Kurose nodded.
"Good" The word hurt this time. Because it meant something he did not want. Shinso watched him with an expression too controlled to be called concern. Kurose continued.
"Both of you. Your value is not decided by these matches. Transfer evaluation includes what you do before entering the ring, how you behave when pressured, and whether you leave with judgment intact" Ren said "Understood" Shinso said "Heard" Kurose looked at him. He sighed.
"Understanding will be demonstrated""Better" The first tournament match would begin after a longer break. Midoriya vs Shinso. Of course. U. A. wanted tension immediately. Or fate had terrible pacing. Perhaps both. The participant waiting area separated upcoming competitors from others. Shinso sat on a bench with his elbows on his knees, hands clasped, looking at the floor.
Ren stood a few steps away because sitting too much stiffened his ribs and because Shinso looked like someone who needed nearby distance, not company. Izuku entered the far side of the waiting area with Uraraka and Iida before being directed toward the separate competitor corridor. His eyes found Shinso. Then Ren. He approached cautiously. Uraraka followed two steps behind, then stopped when Izuku looked at her. She nodded and stayed back. Izuku stood before Shinso. Shinso looked up.
The space around them tightened. Izuku said "Alive?" Shinso stared. Then exhaled through his nose.
"Unfortunately" Izuku nodded.
"Good" Ren almost smiled. Shinso looked annoyed that the ritual worked. Izuku looked nervous, but not because of disgust. Not because of Shinso's Quirk alone. Because he understood enough to know that answering was danger and not answering was also a kind of wall.
"I won't underestimate you" Izuku said Shinso's mouth twisted.
"That's what people say right before they do it" Izuku shook his head.
"No. I mean I know you can beat me" That landed. Shinso went still. Ren watched carefully. Izuku continued.
"Your Quirk is scary because it works. But it helped people too. Both are true. I'll fight seriously" Shinso's hands tightened. No one spoke. Then Shinso said "Do you always say the most inconvenient sincere thing possible?" Izuku blinked.
"Maybe?"
"Terrible habit""I'm working on worse ones first" That was almost a joke. Ren looked at him. Izuku had been spending too much time around them. Shinso noticed too.
"Who taught you that?" Izuku glanced at Ren. Ren looked away. Izuku smiled faintly. Then he looked back at Shinso.
"Good luck" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Don't answer me in the ring" Izuku swallowed.
"I'll try not to""Trying is how people lose" Ren said "Method is better" Both looked at him. Ren did not apologize. Izuku nodded slowly.
"Method. Right" A staff member called for first match competitors. Izuku inhaled. Shinso stood. For a second, they faced each other not as Hero Course and General Studies, not miracle and warning label, but as two boys walking into a field designed to make one of them advance and the other become a lesson. Shinso said "If you answer, I'll use it" Izuku said "I know""Good" There it was. The word had infected even threats. Shinso walked toward the tunnel. Izuku went to the opposite entrance. Ren stayed where he was.
Uraraka approached slowly.
"Are you okay?" Ren looked at her.
"Why do people ask that before dangerous matches?"
"Because the answer matters""It does not change the match""No. But it changes whether someone stands alone before it" Ren had no response. She smiled slightly.
"Yeah. That's what I thought" Ren looked toward the tunnel where Shinso had gone. Then toward the other entrance.
"Midoriya must not answer""I know""He will want to""I know""Shinso must not turn that want into punishment" Uraraka's face softened.
"You're worried about both of them" Ren frowned.
"Yes""That's allowed""Competition complicates it""Still allowed" Ren looked at the ring entrance. The crowd roared as the announcer began calling the first match. Allowed. Dangerous word. Useful word. Maybe both. He took his seat in the participant observation area as the first match began. Shinso stepped into the ring from one side. Izuku from the other. The bracket glowed above them. Midoriya Izuku vs Shinso Hitoshi. Hero Course vs General Studies. First place vs fourth-team rider.
Power that broke bones vs voice that took choice. The crowd leaned forward. Ren's phone buzzed. Hana. Status? He typed: Green-yellow. Watching first match. Shinso vs Midoriya. Todoroki match later. Scar quiet after medical check. Hana replied: Breathe. Eat during break. Being worried for them does not require hurting yourself. He stared at the sentence. Then typed: Understood. A second later: Demonstrate. He almost laughed. Daichi probably wrote that. Or Hana had adopted it fully.
On the ring, Midnight raised her arm. Present Mic's voice rose.
"FIRST MATCH OF THE TOURNAMENT! MIDORIYA VERSUS SHINSO! Let's see who takes the first step toward the final!" Aizawa said "Watch the first sentence" Ren did. The signal fell. The match began.
