Chương 44: The Tournament Continues
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 160 chương · ~37 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The tournament did not stop because Ren Akiyama had a fever. This was rude. Also correct. The Sports Festival had been built to continue. It continued through injury, tears, applause, disappointment, medical stoppages, repaired concrete, commentary transitions, and children learning too quickly what public judgment felt like. The stadium did not possess malice. That almost made it worse. It was not cruel because it hated anyone. It was cruel because momentum was part of its design.
Ren lay in the infirmary with cooling packs arranged near but not on the active scar-lines, an IV in his right arm, a monitor counting the ways his body objected to the day, and a ceiling tile pattern that had already become intolerably familiar. He had slept. Not well. Enough that Recovery Girl called it sleep and not "horizontal analysis with occasional unconsciousness" His fever had dropped from terrible to concerning.
His ribs remained a six when the medication thinned and a four when the medication did its job. His left shoulder felt as if someone had filled the joint with heated wire and then asked it politely to remain still. The scar-lines had faded to thin raised paths, visible mostly along his left forearm, palm, shoulder, flank, and right foot. Under the transparent dressing, the old burn scar looked swollen and tired. He sympathized. A muted roar reached the room through layered walls. Another match had ended.
Ren turned his eyes toward the door. Recovery Girl did not look up from the tablet.
"No""I did not ask""Your face asked""I have a medically expressive face""You have a medically suspicious face" Hana, seated beside the bed, turned a page in the statement packet Kurose had left and said "Both can be true" Daichi sat at the other side, one hand wrapped around a paper cup of vending machine coffee he had not drunk for twenty minutes.
"That coffee is cold" Ren said Daichi looked at it.
"Yes""You should replace it""I am emotionally attached to this one""Unhealthy" Daichi smiled without looking away from the cup.
"Family trait" Hana shot him a look. He drank the cold coffee out of spite and immediately regretted it. Ren almost smiled. His ribs warned him not to. He obeyed. The door opened. Kurose entered with a tablet and the expression of someone who had spent the last hour preventing adults from turning a child into a committee agenda. Shinso followed her, carrying two water bottles, one rice ball, and a face that implied all three objects had offended him personally.
Behind them, Arai stood at the threshold, dampeners on, hands folded around a note. Kenta and Sano were visible behind her before Recovery Girl narrowed her eyes toward the hallway.
"No crowding" Sano leaned sideways to see past Arai.
"We are a small crowd" Recovery Girl said "You are a noisy diagnosis" Kenta put one hand over Sano's mouth. Arai stepped in alone.
"I can leave if noise is bad" Ren said "No" Recovery Girl said "Two minutes. Quietly" Arai nodded and approached the foot of the bed. She looked at Ren's arm for half a second. Then at his face. Her eyes were steady in the way of someone choosing steadiness as work.
"Quiet room exists" Ren remembered the note.
"Yes""I meant it""I know""You looked like you needed evidence" He swallowed.
"Thank you" She placed the folded note on the small table beside the bed. The handwriting was careful. Quiet room exists. Under it, in smaller letters: So does the loud one. You came back from both. Ren read it twice. The monitor noticed. Recovery Girl muttered something about sentimental arrhythmias. Arai smiled faintly. Then stepped back. Kenta appeared in the doorway as soon as she moved.
"Can I say one thing?" Recovery Girl said "No" He said it anyway.
"You are an idiot and I'm proud" Ren whispered "You said you would deny it" Kenta's face fell.
"Damn it" Sano leaned around him.
"Team No remains undefeated in emotional damage" Kurose turned.
"Sano" He vanished behind the doorframe. Shinso entered fully and put one water bottle on the table with unnecessary force.
"He has been rehearsing that line for twenty minutes" Ren looked at him.
"You allowed this?"
"I'm eliminated. My standards are unstable" Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Water" He opened his own bottle.
"Everyone in this room is obsessed""With hydration" Recovery Girl said "Yes. It keeps fools alive longer than pride" Shinso sat in the chair near the wall. Not too close. Closer than yesterday. Progress by logistics. Kurose remained standing.
"The next major match is Midoriya versus Todoroki" The room changed. Not dramatically. Precisely. Hana's hand stilled on the packet. Daichi looked at Ren. Shinso leaned back too casually. Recovery Girl looked at Ren's monitor before Ren reacted. Ren did not ask to see it. That took effort. Kurose noticed.
"Good" Ren closed his eyes briefly.
"Do not reward me for not asking""I will reward useful restraint whenever it inconveniences you""Hostile pedagogy""Correct" A distant swell of crowd noise reached them. Ren opened his eyes.
"Who has advanced since?" Kurose checked the tablet.
"Midoriya advanced over Shinso. Bakugo over Uraraka. Iida over Mori. Tokoyami over Arai. Todoroki over you. Yaoyorozu advanced over Sero. Kirishima advanced over Ashido. Kaminari advanced over Tetsutetsu by referee stoppage after mutual overexertion" Sano's voice came from the hallway.
"Justice for metal guy!" Recovery Girl snapped "Hallway quiet!" Silence. Kurose continued.
"Quarterfinals are beginning. Midoriya versus Todoroki is first" Ren absorbed that. Izuku had reached Todoroki. Still. Even after changes. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. The river had bent and found its shape again. Shinso watched him.
"Fragment?"
"No""You sure?"
"No image. Pattern recognition. Todoroki needed someone to force the question. Midoriya was always likely to be that kind of idiot" Shinso nodded.
"Heroic idiot""Yes" Recovery Girl said "You are all banned from romanticizing idiocy" Daichi lifted one hand slightly.
"Could we define idiocy for family compliance?"
"No" Hana almost smiled. Kurose held the tablet but did not turn it toward Ren.
"We can provide audio only if Recovery Girl agrees. No visual replay. No live video" Ren's pulse shifted. Recovery Girl checked.
"Audio only. Low volume. If his pulse spikes, it stops. If he asks for visuals, it stops. If anyone starts providing tactical narration in excessive detail, I start removing chairs" Sano called softly from the hallway.
"Can I be a chair?"
"No" Ren looked at Kurose.
"Audio only is acceptable" Hana's eyes searched his face.
"You do not have to""I know""Do you?" Ren breathed shallowly.
"I want to know what happens. I do not need to watch myself through him" Kurose nodded.
"That is a better answer than I expected""Your expectation management is harsh""Earned" She set the tablet on the counter and adjusted the feed to audio. The stadium came into the room muffled but clear enough. Present Mic's voice filled the quiet.
"QUARTERFINAL TIME! First up, two powerhouses from Class 1-A! Midoriya Izuku, our obstacle race winner, against Todoroki Shoto, the ice-cold prodigy who advanced after one of the wildest safety saves this festival has ever seen!" A pause. Then Aizawa's voice.
"Keep the focus on the match" Present Mic lowered his volume by a fraction.
"Right. Midoriya versus Todoroki. This one matters" Ren stared at the ceiling. This one matters. Yes. No. All of them mattered. The crowd roared through the speaker. Recovery Girl lowered volume. Shinso muttered "Cowardly speaker" Recovery Girl pointed at him without looking. He drank water. Midnight's voice announced the match. Then the signal. The first ice attack sounded different through audio only. A roar of cold across concrete. Crowd reaction.
Present Mic shouting as Todoroki opened with a broad freeze, faster and larger than what he had used at the start against Ren. Ren's left arm heated under the dressing. Not much. Memory. He inhaled too sharply. Ribs objected. Hana's hand moved near his. Not gripping. There. Recovery Girl watched the monitor. Ren said "Yellow stable""No one asked""You looked""Fair" Aizawa's voice came through.
"Midoriya dodged the first wave. He is not answering with maximum output" Ren's attention sharpened. Good. Present Mic shouted "Midoriya is using small bursts to stay mobile! That control training is showing!" Somewhere beyond the room, All Might would be listening. Or watching. Or standing where the cameras expected him to stand, with that impossible smile held in place by will, secrecy, and debt. Ren hoped he heard that part. Small bursts. No breaks. The match continued. Ice. Movement. Concrete cracking.
The crowd rising and falling. Present Mic's commentary turning motion into spectacle. Aizawa stripping spectacle into function. Midoriya avoided. Todoroki pressed. No fire. Of course. Shinso said softly "He's doing the one-answer thing again" Ren looked toward him. Shinso's eyes remained on the tablet.
"Todoroki. Ice only. Bigger, smarter, better. Still one answer" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Kurose glanced at both of them but did not stop the discussion. Maybe because it was restrained. Maybe because it mattered. A crash came through the speakers. Present Mic shouted "Midoriya takes the hit but stays in bounds!" Aizawa said "He redirected part of the force. No fracture visible yet" Yet. Recovery Girl's mouth tightened. Hana looked at Ren's face. He kept breathing. The match audio grew harder to parse as the crowd intensified.
Todoroki's ice attacks became larger, then more precise, then larger again when precision failed to end it. Midoriya answered with controlled bursts at first, then stronger flicks that cracked ice without shattering himself. Ren heard the shift. So did Recovery Girl. She muttered "Don't escalate" On the feed, Midoriya's voice came through faintly for the first time, swallowed by distance and crowd. Not words. A shout. Todoroki answered with silence and ice. Then Midoriya spoke louder.
The microphones caught fragments.
"Your power" The room went still. Shinso leaned forward. Ren closed his eyes. There it was. But the words did not arrive alone now. They arrived after Ren had moved through Todoroki's ice and chosen the falling slab. After Todoroki had watched someone use a body's emergency answer for a priority other than winning. After the stadium had applauded the loser and still sent the winner forward. Midoriya's voice came again, clearer.
"It's yours!" The crowd exploded. Todoroki said something too quiet for the audio feed. Ice surged again. Larger. Angrier? No. Disturbed. Ren's scar warmed. Hana whispered "Breathe" He did. In. Hold. Out. Shinso's voice was low.
"That line works on him?" Ren answered "Not by itself" Another crash. Midoriya shouted again. This time the microphones caught more.
"Akiyama used one chance to protect people from your ice!" Ren's eyes opened. The room froze. On the feed, the stadium erupted into shock, then a wave of sound. Midoriya continued, voice rough but carrying.
"You have two halves and you keep pretending one of them doesn't exist! Is that really control?" Ren stared at the ceiling. No one spoke. Even Recovery Girl did not. Todoroki's silence became audible. That was impossible. It happened anyway. Then Present Mic whispered too loudly.
"Midoriya is pressing Todoroki hard" Aizawa said "He is not wrong" The sentence landed in the infirmary like a second diagnosis. He is not wrong. Ren looked at Kurose. She was watching him. Not the tablet.
"Status" she said"Scar heat localized. Emotional spike. No spread. Breathing stable. Yellow""Good" Shinso muttered "Midoriya really does say the most inconvenient sincere thing available" Ren said "Yes" The match shifted. Even without visuals, everyone felt it. There was a pause longer than any before. Then heat. Not through the room. Through the crowd. The sound changed first. A gasp moving outward. A roar beginning in disbelief. Present Mic losing language for half a heartbeat. Then he found too much of it.
"FIRE! TODOROKI SHOTO HAS USED HIS LEFT SIDE! TODOROKI HAS USED FIRE!" The roar hit the infirmary through the tablet like a storm trapped in metal. Ren's eyes closed. Not from pain. From inevitability altered but not avoided. Todoroki had used fire. Midoriya had reached him. Not alone. Never alone. But with his own words. His own body. His own refusal to let silence decide the match. Ren felt no jealousy for one clean second. Then he did. Both were true. He whispered "Good" Shinso looked at him.
Ren did not open his eyes.
"Both meanings" Shinso said"Yes" Recovery Girl, very quietly, said "No heroic escalation, Midoriya" The match did not obey. Fire changed the audio completely. Ice cracked louder. Heat blasted steam into the air, and the crowd reacted with awe that almost drowned out the commentators. Present Mic shouted about two halves, full power, a clash of future heroes. Aizawa said something about uncontrolled output and referee readiness.
Midnight's voice cut through once, warning both students to remain within safety parameters. They did not fully. Of course. Young bodies with too much power and too many wounds rarely respected parameters once the wound spoke back. Ren's monitor climbed. He knew before Recovery Girl said anything.
"I am stable""You are climbing""Emotion, not Quirk""Your body does not label them as cleanly as you do" She reached for the tablet volume. Ren said "Please" The word came out too raw. Hana looked at him. Recovery Girl paused.
"You get thirty more seconds" That was mercy disguised as tyranny. The final exchange began. No visuals. Only sound. Midoriya shouted. Todoroki answered. Fire and ice met with a force that turned the stadium into a single held breath before impact. The audio distorted. The tablet crackled. Crowd noise vanished into static for one second. Then everything returned at once. Present Mic screaming. The crowd roaring. Midnight calling the result. The room waited. Kurose increased the volume by one notch.
Midnight's voice came through.
"Midoriya is out of bounds! Todoroki advances!" Ren let the air out. Izuku lost. Todoroki advanced. Clean line. Unclean ring. Again. Present Mic continued, voice shaking with adrenaline.
"Todoroki Shoto advances after an unbelievable clash! Midoriya is eliminated, but what a match! What a match!" Aizawa said "Midoriya broke his fingers" Recovery Girl turned the feed off. Silence fell. Not peaceful. Necessary. She stood very still for one second. Then said "I am going to kill Toshinori" Hana looked up sharply. Daichi did too. Shinso's eyes narrowed. The name landed in the room like something private that had accidentally touched air.
Recovery Girl did not flinch, but her face changed by the smallest margin. Kurose spoke immediately, clean and calm.
"All Might's given name is not the topic" It was a correction. It was also a door closing before anyone could see what lay behind it. Hana looked from Recovery Girl to Kurose. Then to Ren. Ren kept his face still. Too still, maybe. Daichi's gaze lingered on Recovery Girl, not suspicious in a conspiratorial way, but alert now, aware that adults had almost said something larger than the room. Shinso's expression went flat. He had heard. He stored things when he heard them. Of course he did.
Recovery Girl crossed her arms.
"The topic is a boy with broken fingers and a mentor who will be receiving an extremely educational medical lecture" Kurose nodded once.
"Yes" The room accepted the redirection. Not because it erased the name. Because enough people in the room knew better than to pull a wire in a medical bed. Ren stared at the ceiling. Izuku broke his fingers. Not arms. Not full shatter. Still damage. Better? Worse? Both. He had made Todoroki use fire. He had lost. He had broken. He had said Ren's name, or close enough to become part of the match. That should not matter. It did. Shinso leaned back in the chair.
"He lost""Yes""Got what he wanted from the match""Yes""Broke himself doing it""Yes""Sounds familiar" Ren looked at him. Shinso's face was unreadable. Not cruel. Tired. Ren said "Careful" Shinso nodded.
"Yeah. I know" Kurose turned away from the tablet.
"The match will be discussed heavily. Your name will likely be pulled into it because Midoriya referenced your match" Ren closed his eyes.
"Understood" Hana said "No replay""Yes" Daichi asked "Can they keep him from being asked about it?" Kurose said "U. A. can restrict direct interviews. We cannot stop public discussion" The answer had become familiar. The helplessness had become familiar too. Ren hated repetition. A knock came at the door. Everyone turned. A U. A. staff member stood outside with a small sealed envelope in hand and the cautious posture of someone sent near Recovery Girl with paperwork. Kurose opened the door only halfway.
"Yes?"
"Message from All Might for Akiyama Ren. Delivery cleared through Principal Nezu and medical staff" The room changed again. This time not with secrecy. With weight. Hana's eyes widened. Daichi straightened. Shinso looked at the envelope as if it might explode into national history. Even after everything, even after USJ, even after the Sports Festival, the words All Might still changed the air. Not because they had never seen heroes. Because this was not a screen, not a distant announcement, not a symbol in the sky.
It was a message addressed to Ren. Recovery Girl's expression tightened. Kurose took the envelope and inspected the seal.
"Was this written before or after Midoriya's match?"
"Before the match concluded. Delivered now after confirmation from Principal Nezu" Recovery Girl held out her hand. Kurose gave it to her. She opened the envelope without apology. Shinso muttered "Privacy has been murdered" Recovery Girl said "Medical supervision outranks drama" She read the note. Her mouth thinned. Then she looked at Ren.
"It is short. I will read it aloud if you consent" Ren's throat tightened. Hana looked at him. Daichi waited. Shinso looked away, granting privacy without leaving. Ren said "Read" Recovery Girl unfolded the note. Her voice was flatter than the words deserved.
"Young Akiyama. What you did was heroic. It was too expensive. It must not become a model. I am grateful you are alive. I will ask to speak with you only when you are ready, and only if it does not burden your recovery. All Might" The monitor climbed. No one commented. Ren stared at the ceiling. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. The three phrases sat beside each other without trying to devour each other. That mattered. More than he wanted. Hana's hand tightened around his. Daichi exhaled slowly.
Shinso's eyes returned to Ren's face. Kurose watched the monitor. Recovery Girl folded the note.
"He wrote that before Midoriya broke his fingers" Ren absorbed the point. Before. He had learned something before the next failure. Small progress. Again. Ren whispered "I want to keep it" Recovery Girl looked at Hana. Hana nodded. Kurose took a plastic sleeve from a folder with the speed of someone who had expected evidence to become emotionally relevant.
"Sealed copy. Original can remain with family. No photos" Shinso said "You just carry sleeves?" Kurose looked at him.
"Yes""Terrifying""Prepared""Same hallway sometimes" Ren's mouth tried to move. Pain warned him. He stopped. Daichi looked at the note as Recovery Girl placed it carefully in the sleeve.
"The Symbol of Peace wrote to you" he said quietly The sentence was not awe alone. It was fear too. Pride. Concern. The knowledge that attention from someone that large could protect a child or crush him accidentally. Hana's voice was careful.
"He used the right words" Recovery Girl said "Better words" Kurose added "Safer words" Ren whispered "Not safe""No" Kurose said "But safer matters" Outside the room, the stadium roared again. Another match beginning. The day refused to pause. Ren looked toward the dead tablet.
"Todoroki?" Kurose checked her screen.
"Being evaluated. Physically stable. Emotionally altered, according to preliminary observation" Shinso said "Midoriya does that" Ren's eyes moved to him. Shinso shrugged.
"To people. Unfortunately" Kurose's expression almost changed.
"He does" Recovery Girl took the tablet.
"No more tournament audio for now" Ren did not protest. That surprised even him. The silence afterward was not empty. It held Izuku's words. Todoroki's fire. All Might's note. Recovery Girl's slip of a name. Hana's hand. Daichi's cold coffee finally abandoned. Shinso holding a water bottle like it had personally wronged him. Kurose sealing the note as if emotional damage needed archival protection. Ren's body hurt. His fever pulsed. His scar-lines waited beneath dressing and skin.
Somewhere outside the room, the Sports Festival continued to decide things it had no right to decide and reveal things no one could put back. Todoroki had used fire. Izuku had lost and changed him. All Might had said heroic and too expensive in the same message. The words sat beside Ren like carefully placed instruments. Not safe. Useful. Maybe that was the best U. A. could offer today. Shinso stood.
"I'm going before the room becomes a parenting seminar" Hana looked at him.
"You will eat first" He stopped.
"I ate""That was earlier" Ren whispered "Specific" Shinso glared.
"You are medically forbidden from teamwork against me" Hana reached into her bag and held out a wrapped rice ball.
"Not dramatic" Shinso stared at it. Then took it.
"Hostage negotiator""Yes" Hana said The answer made him blink. Daichi hid a smile badly. Shinso looked betrayed by the universe and left with the rice ball. Kurose followed him after a moment, likely to make sure he actually ate and did not turn nutrition into a philosophical resistance movement. Hana dimmed the bedside light. Daichi finally threw away the cold coffee. Ren lay still. The note from All Might rested inside a plastic sleeve on the side table. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model.
He could not decide whether the words were comfort, warning, apology, or burden. Probably all. Always all. He closed his eyes. The tournament continued without him. For once, that did not feel only like abandonment. It felt, a little, like being allowed to remain where he was.
