Shoto did not know how to ask his sister about home. This was inconvenient, because he had asked to ask. The message sat in his phone all through Saturday morning like a small piece of ice that refused to melt. I want to ask about home. Fuyumi had answered with of course, because Fuyumi answered impossible things as if they were schedule changes. She had sent a time, a note that Natsuo might be there, and then a second message asking if he had eaten breakfast.
Shoto had stared at that last message longer than the others. Had he eaten breakfast? Yes. Had he tasted it? No. Did that count? Unknown. He arrived at the Todoroki house at eleven. The gate looked the same. The walls looked the same. The path looked the same. The house held itself in the same shape it always had, expensive and quiet and too large for the amount of warmth it had contained. He stood outside for a moment with his hand near the gate. His left side was quiet. His right side was cold. Neither helped.
He opened the gate and went in. Fuyumi met him at the entrance before he had to call out. She wore a soft sweater and an apron, hair tied back, expression bright enough to be intentional and worried enough to be real.
"Shoto""Fuyumi" She looked him over once, the way Recovery Girl did but with less threat and more history.
"You look tired""I am""Have you eaten?"
"Yes""Do you want tea?"
"Yes""Good. Come in" The house accepted him without asking if it had the right. That was always one of the problems. Natsuo was in the kitchen, sitting at the table with one elbow near a stack of textbooks and the expression of someone who had come because Fuyumi asked and was now regretting the emotional implications of being a decent brother. He looked up when Shoto entered.
"Hey" Shoto stopped at the doorway.
"Hello" Natsuo's eyes moved over him, pausing at the left side of his hair, the set of his shoulders, the way he stood like a person expecting a room to become a command.
"You look like hell" Fuyumi turned from the stove.
"Natsuo""What? He does" Shoto sat across from him.
"Recovery Girl said I am a mess in a different font" Natsuo blinked. Then laughed once before he could stop himself. Fuyumi's mouth twitched.
"That sounds like her" Shoto looked at the table. It was easier to sit here than he had expected. Worse too. Fuyumi placed tea in front of him. Green tea, not too hot. She remembered that. She remembered many things he did not know how to ask her to stop remembering, because asking her to stop would make him even more aware that she had kept pieces of him in reach while the house made everyone smaller. Natsuo leaned back.
"So" Shoto looked at him. Fuyumi sat down beside them.
"You said you wanted to ask about home" The words were gentle. They still made the room harder to breathe in. Shoto wrapped both hands around the cup. The left hand felt the heat. His heat. Not his father's. That distinction remained work. He said "Father sent a professional inquiry about someone from U. A." Natsuo's face changed immediately. Fuyumi's hands went still. Shoto continued before either could ask.
"Akiyama Ren. General Studies. He was injured during my match at the Sports Festival while stopping a hazard created by my ice" Natsuo's mouth tightened.
"The kid on the broadcast""Yes" Fuyumi's eyes softened with recognition.
"The one who went for the falling ice""Yes" Shoto looked down at his tea.
"Father's agency described him as high-stress survival response. Field persistence. Extreme-environment training compatibility" Natsuo's chair scraped.
"Of course he did" Fuyumi looked at him.
"Natsuo""No, of course he did. A kid gets hurt in public and Dad sees a training category" Shoto did not defend him. That was new. The absence of defense took up space. Fuyumi looked at Shoto more carefully.
"Is that why you wanted to ask about home?"
"Partly" Natsuo folded his arms.
"What did Endeavor do now?" Fuyumi flinched at the name. Shoto noticed. He had always noticed less than he should have. Maybe because noticing had been dangerous. Maybe because he had been the wrong age to understand that silence could be inherited. He said "He requested controlled contact. U. A. allowed it under restrictions. Akiyama stopped the meeting" Natsuo's face sharpened.
"Why?" Shoto's hand tightened around the cup.
"Classified" Natsuo stared.
"Classified?"
"Yes" Fuyumi's voice was quieter.
"About what?" Shoto looked at her.
"Adjacent to us" The word entered the kitchen and made every appliance sound too loud. Natsuo stood halfway.
"What the hell does that mean?" Shoto did not move.
"I do not know fully" Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.
"Then why are you saying it?"
"Because Akiyama would not tell me" Natsuo's anger stumbled. Fuyumi looked down at her hands. Shoto continued "He said he was not withholding to control me. He said there is a locked door instead of pretending there is no room" Fuyumi closed her eyes for one second. Natsuo sat back down slowly.
"He said that?"
"Yes""And you believed him?" Shoto looked at the tea.
"I believed that he was trying not to use what he knows" Natsuo's jaw tightened.
"Some classmate knows something about our family and gets to decide not to tell us?"
"No" Shoto's voice came colder than intended. He stopped. Breathed. Tried again.
"No. That is not what this is" Natsuo leaned forward.
"Then what is it?" Shoto did not know. That was the point. He said the only part he did know.
"It made me realize I was waiting for someone outside the house to give me my own history" The kitchen went silent. Fuyumi looked at him with an expression that hurt worse than anger. Natsuo looked away first. Shoto continued "I do not want Akiyama to become another person who knows this family better than I do" Fuyumi's fingers curled around her cup.
"No one knows this family well" Natsuo made a bitter sound.
"Dad thinks he does" Fuyumi said nothing. Shoto looked between them.
"I want to ask about Touya" The name did not break. It entered whole. That made it worse than Ren's fragment had been. Fuyumi's face went pale. Natsuo's chair creaked under his grip. For several seconds, the name sat at the table like a person no one had invited because he had never stopped belonging there. Shoto kept his hands around the cup.
"I know he existed" Natsuo's eyes flashed.
"He was our brother. Not an old file""I know""Do you?" The question was cruel. Not undeserved. Shoto accepted it.
"No. Not enough" Fuyumi's breath trembled.
"Natsuo""No, he asked. He came here asking about home. That means asking about him too" Fuyumi looked at Shoto.
"What do you want to know?" Everything. Nothing. The parts that would make the locked door stop glowing. The parts that would make Ren's silence less necessary. The parts that would explain why his father looked at potential like hunger. The parts that would explain why fire had always felt like inheritance and crime together. Shoto said "When did Father start training him?" Natsuo looked away again, mouth tight. Fuyumi took a slow breath.
"Touya wanted it at first" Shoto stayed still. Fuyumi continued "He wanted Father to look at him. He wanted to be special to him. I was young, but I remember that. He would talk about training like it was proof that he mattered" Natsuo's hands shook once.
"He was a kid" Fuyumi nodded.
"Yes" Shoto looked at the tea. The heat had gone lukewarm.
"He wanted it?" Natsuo turned sharply.
"Do not turn that into consent" Shoto looked up.
"I am not" Natsuo's eyes were bright with anger.
"He was a kid. Kids want what gets them loved. That does not mean the adult gets to call it consent" The sentence struck hard. Shoto thought of Ren saying: The difference between gift and violation begins with whether you were allowed to say yes. He did not know why that sentence came now. Maybe because it belonged here too. He said "I understand" Natsuo's face tightened.
"No, you don't" Shoto nodded.
"No. I am trying to" Fuyumi reached across the table, not touching either brother.
"Touya wanted Father's attention. Father wanted a successor. Those two wants made each other worse" Shoto listened. Every word felt like touching a bruise through cloth. Fuyumi continued "At first, Father praised him. Touya smiled more then. He was loud. He was stubborn. He would talk about surpassing All Might like it was a game he and Father were playing together" Natsuo whispered "It was never a game" Fuyumi nodded.
"No" Shoto asked "What changed?" Natsuo laughed once without humor.
"His body" Fuyumi's eyes lowered.
"His fire was too much for him. Or his body was wrong for his fire. I do not know how to say it correctly" Natsuo said "Dad said it wrong for years" Fuyumi looked at him. Natsuo's voice sharpened.
"Incompatible. Defective. Dangerous. Unstable. Like Touya was a failed device" Shoto's fingers tightened. Heat gathered in his left palm. He released the cup before it cracked. Fuyumi noticed. Natsuo noticed. No one told him to control it. That helped. He breathed.
"Father stopped training him?" Fuyumi's silence answered first. Natsuo said "He tried" Tried. A terrible word. Shoto had heard adults use tried as if intention could stand in for repair. Fuyumi's voice became small.
"Touya did not stop wanting to be seen" There it was. The kitchen shifted. Shoto thought of Ren's face in the corridor. Not telling. Holding a door shut. Wrong witness. His left side warmed. Not enough to burn. Enough to know. Natsuo said "Dad moved on" Shoto looked up.
"To me" No one answered. That was answer. The room did not tilt. Shoto almost wished it had. Instead the truth landed with terrible ordinary weight. He had not been born as a child in his father's eyes. He had been born as correction. Replacement. New answer. One large enough to cover the old one if everyone agreed not to look at the edges. Fuyumi's voice broke.
"Shoto, you did not replace him" Shoto looked at her.
"Father used me as if I did" Natsuo's face twisted.
"Yes" Fuyumi closed her eyes.
"Yes" The confirmation did not break him. The uncertainty had been worse. Shoto asked "Was Touya kind?" The question surprised all of them. Including him. Fuyumi's mouth trembled.
"Sometimes" Natsuo looked down.
"He was my brother" That answered more than kind would have. Fuyumi wiped at one eye quickly.
"He was intense. He could be mean. He could be sweet. He wanted things too hard. He looked at Father like the sun would go out if Father turned away. He scared me sometimes because he seemed to burn even when he was sitting still" Natsuo's voice was rough.
"He used to talk to me at night" Shoto looked at him. Natsuo did not meet his eyes.
"After Father stopped watching him. Touya would come to my room and talk. He would say he was still training. He would say Father would understand when he saw. He would say his fire was better. Hotter. Special" Blue-white flame against snow. Shoto did not have that image. Not from Ren. Not directly. But something in him moved toward it as if the house itself had been waiting for him to ask.
"What happened on the mountain?" Fuyumi's face went white. Natsuo stood so fast the chair hit the floor.
"Do not ask her that" Shoto froze. Natsuo's breathing was harsh.
"Do not make her be the one to tell you everything" Fuyumi stood too.
"Natsuo""No. He needs to know, fine. But not like this. Not all through you. Not because Dad made every truth in this house pass through whoever was least allowed to break" Fuyumi looked as if he had slapped her. Then as if he had said something she had needed and hated. Shoto stood slowly.
"I am sorry" Natsuo's laugh was bitter.
"Everyone is sorry in this house" Shoto looked at him.
"What do I do instead?" Natsuo had no answer ready. That made it real. Fuyumi bent and righted the fallen chair with both hands. The simple motion gave everyone a second to breathe. When she sat again, her voice was quieter.
"We do not answer everything today" Shoto nodded immediately.
"Yes" Natsuo looked at him, anger still sharp but less aimed. Shoto continued "I do not want to make you become records" That sentence came from somewhere close to Ren. Natsuo heard it. Fuyumi did too. She sat back.
"Thank you" Natsuo muttered "U. A. is doing something to all of you" Shoto considered.
"Yes" That almost made Natsuo smile. Almost. The kitchen did not become comfortable. That would have been dishonest. Fuyumi made more tea because Todoroki siblings apparently survived by putting hot water between themselves and collapse. Natsuo picked up his chair fully and sat with his arms crossed. Shoto sat too, slower this time. Fuyumi said "Mother may be part of this conversation eventually" Shoto's chest tightened.
"Yes""Not today""Yes" Natsuo looked at him.
"Does Dad know you are asking?"
"No""Good" Fuyumi gave him a look. Natsuo did not apologize. Shoto said "Akiyama knows less than I feared and more than I wanted" Natsuo's eyes narrowed.
"What did he say exactly?"
"Nothing specific. He said it was classified, adjacent, not currently safety-actionable. He said he was trying not to use what he knew" Fuyumi repeated softly "Trying not to use it" Shoto nodded.
"He said your father looks at things and tries to make them serve a goal. He said he was trying not to do that with what he knows" Natsuo's expression shifted despite himself.
"That is" Fuyumi finished quietly.
"Careful" Natsuo looked irritated by the word. But did not deny it. Shoto said "He is not the door. He only saw that there is one" Fuyumi looked at the hallway beyond the kitchen.
"Then maybe we start with the doors that are ours" The sentence stayed. Not solving anything. Beginning something. After an hour, Shoto left. Fuyumi packed food for him to take back, because asking about dead brothers apparently did not override sister instincts. Natsuo walked him to the entrance but stopped before the genkan. He shoved his hands into his pockets.
"I got angry""Yes""Not just at you""I know""Do you?" Shoto looked at him.
"Mostly" Natsuo snorted.
"That sounds like a real answer" Shoto looked down at the food container.
"I do not know how to be your brother now" Natsuo's face changed. For a second, anger had nowhere to stand. Then he looked away.
"Yeah. Me neither" Silence. Then Natsuo said "Maybe start by texting before you come over with emotional explosives" Shoto nodded.
"That is reasonable" Fuyumi called from inside.
"Natsuo, do not call family history emotional explosives at the door" Natsuo raised his voice.
"What should I call it?" Fuyumi appeared behind him.
"Unresolved material" Natsuo stared.
"You sound like a teacher" Shoto said "Kurose would approve" Fuyumi smiled faintly.
"Is that good?" Natsuo and Shoto answered at the same time.
"Sometimes" For one brief moment, the doorway held something that was not repair but was not only damage. Then Shoto left. He did not go back to U. A. immediately. He walked to a quiet street near the station and took out his phone. The first message was to Fuyumi. Thank you. I will not ask everything at once. She replied: Thank you for asking at all. The second message was to Natsuo. I will text before emotional explosives. Several minutes passed. Then Natsuo replied: Good.
Also eat the food she gave you or she will know somehow. Shoto looked at the container. Then the sky. Then, after a long pause, he opened another message thread. Akiyama. He stared at the name. He typed: I asked my sister and brother. Deleted it. Typed: You were right not to tell me. Deleted it. Typed: The door is mine. He stared at that. Too much? Too little? Accurate. He sent it before he could turn the sentence into ice.
At the Akiyama apartment, Ren received the message while sitting at the kitchen table with a textbook open and Shinso across from him pretending not to need help with hero law terminology. Hana was cutting fruit. Daichi was repairing something that was not an umbrella this time but might become named if unattended. Ren looked at his phone. The door is mine. He went very still. Shinso noticed first.
"Status?" Ren read the message again.
"Yellow. Stable. Todoroki message. No heat" Hana looked up. Daichi put down the screwdriver. Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Need Kurose?" Ren considered.
"No" He turned the phone so Shinso could see the message. Shinso read it. His face changed slowly.
"That is a good sentence""Yes""Did you give him the door metaphor?"
"Yes""Did he return it with ownership?"
"Yes" Hana's shoulders lowered. Daichi said "That sounds healthy enough to be suspicious" Shinso looked at him.
"Your family has standards for suspicious health?" Daichi nodded.
"Many" Ren typed back. Yes. It is. He stopped. Too cold. He added: I will respect that. Sent. The response came ten minutes later. Good. Ren stared at the word. Then put the phone face down. Shinso watched him.
"You are not smiling""No""But?" Ren looked at the textbook.
"But the burden moved without me handing it to him" Shinso leaned back.
"Painfully good?" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes" Hana placed fruit on the table.
"Then eat before becoming a metaphor" Shinso picked up a piece immediately.
"I am learning" Daichi looked proud.
"Good" Shinso groaned.
"The word has escaped into the family system" Ren almost smiled. Safe. That evening, Shoto opened one of the boxes Fuyumi had told him to take from the hallway closet. Not everything. Not the mountain. Not the hospital. Not the full wound. Just one box. Inside were photographs. Old school papers. A broken toy car. A small winter scarf. A picture of four children sitting too stiffly in a room that looked warmer than it had been. Fuyumi smiling. Natsuo leaning sideways.
A younger Shoto with rounder cheeks and eyes that had not yet learned how much not to ask. And Touya. Red hair. Wide grin. Too bright. Not a ghost. Not a category. Not failed material. A boy. Shoto sat on the floor with the photograph in his hand. He did not cry. Not because he was strong. Because the emotion had not learned its path yet. He placed the photo on the low table. Then took out a notebook he rarely used and wrote: Touya wanted Father to look. Then: Wanting attention was not consent.
Then: I was not born guilty. The last sentence took him almost five minutes. He did not believe it fully. He wrote it anyway. At U. A. the next day, Todoroki passed Ren in the hallway. Neither stopped. Neither needed to. Todoroki nodded once. Ren nodded back. No classified words. No borrowed truth. No locked door opened by the wrong witness. Only two students walking past each other with more weight than before and slightly better boundaries around where that weight belonged.
Shinso, watching from two steps behind Ren, muttered "That was emotionally efficient" Ren said "Good" Shinso hissed "Do not" Ren almost smiled. Almost. In his notebook that night, Ren wrote only one line about Todoroki. He found a door that was his. Then he closed the notebook before curiosity could ask for more. Elsewhere, a photograph of a red-haired boy remained on Shoto's table, not solved, not explained, not avenged, not weaponized. Seen. That was not enough. It was also not nothing.
