Chương 61: Approved Distance

The morning internships began, U. A. looked far too much like a train station. Students crossed the courtyard in clusters, uniforms crisp, bags packed, nerves badly hidden under noise. Hero Course students carried agency assignment packets and tried to look like they were not children walking toward adults who might decide the shape of their futures in a week. Support Course students hauled cases of tools and prototype parts toward their own industry placements.
Business Course students moved in efficient groups, already arguing about reputation management, brand ethics, and whether hero names had measurable retention value. Class 1-C stood at the edge of the movement and watched the world board platforms that did not belong to them. Not all of them. Kenta had an internal observation block later in the week. Arai had a support calibration session.
Sano had rescue communication logistics under Kurose's supervision and had spent the morning saying logistics with the intensity of a boy trying to convince himself the word was heroic enough to survive. Shinso had an Aizawa observation block after classes. Ren had Thirteen and Cementoss. Internal. Controlled. Approved distance. He hated the phrase before anyone said it. Kurose gathered the selected 1-C students near the side entrance, away from the Hero Course departure route but not hidden from it. That mattered.
Kurose did not hide them. She also did not make them stand in the center of traffic like proof. She held a clipboard. Of course.
"All right. Listen carefully" Sano straightened.
"I was born listening" Kurose looked at him.
"You were born interrupting. Today we develop" Sano placed one hand over his heart.
"Painful growth""Quiet growth""Less poetic""More useful" Ren stood beside Shinso with his bag in his right hand because the left shoulder still preferred to file complaints. His envelope from the internship briefing was inside the bag, folded against his notebook. No external field internship clearance at this time. He had read the line enough times that it had started to feel less like a denial and more like a bruise shaped like a door. Shinso leaned toward him slightly.
"Status?" Ren looked at the departing students.
"Yellow. Envy. No scar heat. Ego injury. Stable" Shinso nodded.
"Good report" Ren looked at him.
"Revenge?"
"Contagion" Kurose's eyes moved toward them.
"I heard both of you""Good hearing" Shinso said"Dangerous mouth" Kurose answered Shinso looked forward. Kenta, standing on Ren's other side, held his assignment paper in both hands.
"I am nervous" Sano turned to him.
"Excellent. That means your organs are invested" Kenta stared.
"That did not help""It was not my finest signal" Arai said quietly "Try again later" Sano nodded solemnly.
"Calibration accepted" Kurose allowed exactly one second of that before continuing.
"Today's internal blocks are not consolation prizes. They are not smaller because they happen inside U. A. They are controlled because your current capacity, learning goals, and safety requirements make controlled environments more appropriate than field exposure" Ren looked at the courtyard. Midoriya was speaking with All Might near the far walkway. All Might remained in hero form, bright and reassuring, though his smile seemed more careful now if one knew where to look.
Midoriya nodded too fast, notebook clutched under one arm, fingers still supported but improving. The older hero's hand rested briefly on his shoulder. Gran Torino's name had appeared in Midoriya's placement paperwork through channels Ren had not officially seen. That was probably good. Probably dangerous. Probably both. Todoroki stood alone near another gate with a travel bag, looking at a message on his phone. Not Endeavor's car. Not yet. That mattered too.
He looked up once, saw Ren across the courtyard, and nodded. Shoto. Not final. His. Ren nodded back. Then Iida appeared near the main entrance. Perfect uniform. Perfect bag. Perfect posture. Manual's agency packet held in one hand. A brother's name somewhere under his ribs, sounding too much like an order. Ren's left forearm remained cool. No fragment. No warning beyond the ones already given. That made it worse. Iida bowed to Midoriya, Uraraka, and Todoroki. Midoriya said something. Uraraka's face was tight.
Todoroki watched without speaking. Iida smiled. It looked correct. It was the wrong kind of correct. Kurose said "Akiyama" Ren looked back.
"Status changed?"
"Yellow-high. Iida visual trigger. No heat. No new image. Fear" Kurose wrote. Shinso's gaze sharpened toward the courtyard, but he did not ask content. Kurose said "You are not responsible for making him safe alone" Ren inhaled.
"I know""Say it like you know""I am not responsible for making him safe alone""Again" He hated her. He needed her.
"I am not responsible for making him safe alone""Good" Shinso muttered "Weaponized vocabulary" Kurose said "Effective vocabulary" The Hero Course transport doors closed. Iida boarded. Midoriya boarded another route. Todoroki another. Uraraka lifted a hand toward Ren and the others before disappearing behind a bus window. Sano waved back with surprising restraint. Arai lifted two fingers. Kenta nodded as if to a teammate leaving for a match. Ren did nothing. Not because he did not want to.
Because movement felt like pretending he had any control over where they were going. The transports pulled away. The courtyard emptied by degrees. Noise remained for a while, then thinned. The students left behind became visible in the space the others had occupied. Ren disliked the accuracy of that. Kurose closed her clipboard.
"Now we begin" Sano looked at the empty gate.
"That was a very dramatic sentence for internal scheduling""Yes""Good" Kurose's eyes narrowed. Sano looked alarmed.
"I mean administratively good" Shinso whispered "The word is mutating" Ren almost smiled. Safe. Small. The first module took place in Rescue Training Annex B, a smaller facility attached to the main disaster simulation grounds. It lacked the sweeping artificial environments of the USJ, which Ren appreciated and resented in equal measure. No fake landslide zone. No flood area. No burning building simulation. No dramatic dome ceiling. If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent.
Report it. Just a training hall with reinforced walls, modular debris structures, hazard maps, rescue dummies, sensor grids, whiteboards, and enough caution tape to suggest someone had made an aesthetic choice Ren found personally threatening. Cementoss stood near a set of concrete panels arranged at angles. Thirteen stood beside a table covered in scenario cards, her helmet turned toward the entering students. Even without visible eyes, she managed to look kind and serious in a way that made the room slow down.
Kurose led Ren, Kenta, Sano, and two other 1-C students inside. Arai had been routed to Support Course. Shinso had returned to regular classes until his later block. Ren felt the absence more than expected. Annoying. Thirteen spoke first.
"Welcome. Today is not field training" That confirmed it. Ren disliked confirmation. Thirteen continued "It is not rescue heroics. It is not performance. It is not a test of bravery. It is a controlled hazard assessment seminar" Cementoss folded his arms, his stone-like face unreadable.
"The goal is to determine what you see before you move" Ren's attention sharpened. Kurose glanced at him. No comment. Thirteen gestured to the room.
"Most rescue failures begin before anyone touches rubble. Bad assumptions. Bad priorities. Too much confidence in first impressions. Too much pressure to act quickly in the wrong direction" Cementoss said "Sometimes the first correct action is to keep someone from helping badly" Sano whispered "I feel targeted by architecture" Kenta elbowed him lightly. Thirteen's helmet tilted.
"Everyone should feel targeted by that sentence" Sano nodded.
"Fair" The students gathered around the first scenario board. It showed a simplified building floor plan, damage indicators, civilian locations marked as uncertain, and structural warnings. The instructions were clear. Identify hazards. Prioritize information gaps. Decide first action. No movement. No rescue. No touching the physical model. Ren read the board. His body leaned forward before he noticed. Kurose noticed. Of course.
"Feet" Ren looked down. He had stepped half a pace closer. He stepped back.
"Status?"
"Green-yellow. Engagement. No stress""Good" Thirteen placed three markers on the board.
"You have ninety seconds. Write the first thing you would do" Ren's pen moved immediately. Stop entry. Establish perimeter. Confirm gas/electrical status. Determine load-bearing wall integrity before civilian extraction route. Call structural support. Kenta wrote slower. Sano stared, then wrote something, crossed it out, and wrote again. Ninety seconds ended. Thirteen collected the cards. She read Kenta's first.
"Stabilize the visible cracked support before sending anyone through the left hall" Cementoss nodded.
"Good structural instinct" Kenta looked like he might combust quietly. Thirteen read Sano's.
"Keep untrained bystanders from entering and assign one person to gather names of missing civilians" Sano's mouth opened. Then closed because he had not expected his answer to survive. Thirteen said "Good" Sano leaned backward as if struck. Ren looked at him. Sano whispered "I am being professionally perceived" Ren whispered "Breathe" Sano obeyed. Thirteen read Ren's card.
"Stop entry. Establish perimeter. Confirm gas and electrical status. Determine load-bearing wall integrity before civilian extraction route. Call structural support" Cementoss looked at him.
"Correct, but crowded" Ren blinked.
"What?" Cementoss tapped the card.
"You listed five first actions" Ren opened his mouth. Closed it. Thirteen said gently "That happens often with analytical students. You see many correct things. The field requires sequence" Ren looked at the card. Five first actions. He had been asked for the first thing and answered with a system. Useful. Unusable. Cementoss pointed to the board.
"If you have one breath to speak to another responder, what do you say?" Ren stared at the scenario. Gas risk. Entry risk. Structural instability. Civilians. Bystanders. Everything mattered. One breath. He hated the limit. Good. Limit mattered. He said "No entry until utilities and structure are cleared" Cementoss nodded.
"Better" Thirteen said "Your mind can hold a map. Your mouth needs orders people can use" Ren wrote that down. Sano leaned over.
"That sentence is for you and terrifying""Yes" Kurose looked pleased. Ren disliked this module less than expected. That was suspicious. The next scenario involved a collapsed pedestrian bridge after a minor villain incident. Five civilians potentially trapped. One visible victim calling for help. One responder injured. Media drones at the perimeter. A crowd pressing near unstable debris. Ren's first instinct was to go to the visible victim. Then he saw the shadow under the bridge. Secondary collapse risk.
He wrote: Move crowd back first. Drone removal. Assign visible victim verbal contact only until support placed. Thirteen read it.
"Why verbal contact only?" Ren answered "Visible victim may pull responders into collapse zone. Voice support reduces panic while preserving distance" Cementoss nodded.
"And emotional cost?" Ren paused. The question was not about the victim. It was about the responder.
"It feels cruel" Thirteen said "Yes" The room went quiet. She continued "Rescue often contains actions that feel cruel to the person watching one victim suffer because the responder is trying to keep six people alive" Ren looked at the board. USJ shelters. Falling ice. Iida boarding transport. No Hosu. This is protection. It feels like being left behind. Thirteen's voice softened.
"Distance can be care" The words landed badly. Ren's right hand tightened around the pen. No thread. No heat. Kurose said "Status""Yellow. Personal relevance. Stable" Thirteen did not ask. Good. Cementoss moved them to the physical model after that. Not to rescue. To mark. The modular debris structure simulated a small room after partial collapse. Three foam dummies lay in different positions. Red tape indicated unsafe zones. Blue tape indicated unknown zones.
Yellow tape indicated areas that could be reinforced by Cementoss if he were acting in the field. Each student received a marker flag.
"Place one flag where your first intervention should go" Cementoss said "Not where you want to go. Where intervention changes the outcome most" Kenta placed his near the cracked corner support. Good. Sano placed his near the doorway to block entry. Surprisingly good. One of the other students placed it near the closest dummy. Cementoss asked why, and the student answered honestly that they could not ignore someone visible. Thirteen praised the honesty before correcting the priority. Then Ren stepped forward.
The visible dummy near the debris had one arm extended. The second lay under a table. The third was half-hidden behind a tilted panel near the far wall. The far wall was load-bearing. The tilted panel made a triangular space. Void. Possible survivable pocket. Possible crush risk if disturbed. Ren placed his flag not near any dummy, but on the side of the tilted panel where a support brace could preserve the void. Cementoss looked at it.
"Explain""Hidden victim may be in survivable void. Moving visible debris first risks collapse. Brace here preserves options" Cementoss looked at Thirteen. Thirteen nodded.
"Correct" Ren felt the word enter. Good. He saw the danger too late. Not in the model. In himself. Correct felt better than safe. He wanted to be correct again. He wanted harder scenarios. He wanted a room where his mind could become useful enough that no one remembered his body was restricted. That was the shape of the trap. Not pain this time. Competence. Ren stepped back.
"Kurose-sensei" Kurose looked at him.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Positive reinforcement spike. Wanting to continue because correct felt like proof" The room went silent. Sano stared at him. Kenta's eyes widened slightly. Thirteen's helmet tilted. Cementoss said nothing. Kurose wrote.
"Good report" Ren hated the flush that rose under his skin. He hated that saying it out loud helped. Thirteen said "Thank you for naming that" Ren looked at her. She continued "Rescue work attracts people who want to be useful. That is not wrong. It becomes dangerous when usefulness turns into appetite" Usefulness turns into appetite. Ren wrote it down. Kenta did too. Sano wrote it down with very scary sentence in parentheses. Cementoss said "You sit out the next scenario and observe" Ren opened his mouth. Stopped.
Closed it.
"Understood" He sat. It felt like being punished. It was not punishment. That distinction did not make sitting easier. Kenta took the next scenario and made a mistake. Not a catastrophic one. He chose structural reinforcement before checking hazardous material leakage. Cementoss corrected him. Kenta nodded, wrote it down, and tried again. Sano forgot to account for crowd direction and accidentally placed evacuees near a secondary hazard. Thirteen corrected him.
Sano looked horrified, then serious, then wrote morale can kill if placed badly on his card. Ren watched. His body wanted to stand. His mind wanted to help. He remained seated. Distance can be care. Approved distance. Terrible phrase. Important phrase. By the end of the module, Ren had six pages of notes, three status reports, one enforced sitting period, and the uncomfortable knowledge that non-combat rescue could still become a place where he tried to spend himself if adults praised the right parts.
Thirteen approached him as the others packed.
"Akiyama" Ren looked up.
"Yes?"
"You have good instincts" He waited for the blade. Thirteen gave it to him kindly.
"Good instincts are not the same as safe instincts" Ren nodded.
"I know""Do you?" He almost smiled.
"Mostly""That is a beginning" Cementoss joined them.
"Your first actions are often correct but too numerous. Work on compression""Compression?"
"One useful sentence before the full plan" Ren nodded.
"No entry until utilities and structure are cleared""Exactly" Thirteen said "Anchor is a good direction for that" Ren went still. Kurose had clearly shared the internal hero name seminar direction with approved staff. Not public. Still strange. Thirteen continued "An anchor point is not the whole rescue. It is the stable point that lets others move" Ren looked at the debris model.
"Stable points can fail""Yes""That is why they need load limits" Cementoss sounded almost approving.
"Good" Ren closed his eyes briefly. The word again. Always the word. After the module, Ren expected to return to class. Instead, Kurose directed him to a side room with a table, water, and a lunch container.
"Eat""It is not lunch""It is module recovery food""That sounds invented""It is now policy" Ren stared.
"You are enjoying policy creation""Yes" He sat and ate. Kurose reviewed his notes across from him.
"You reported the positive reinforcement spike""Yes""That matters""I disliked it""That also matters" Ren looked at the container.
"I thought approved distance would mean being useless""And?"
"It does not" Kurose waited. He added "It can still make me want to prove usefulness harder""Yes""That seems inefficient" Kurose leaned back.
"Growth is often inefficient""Sano would like that""Do not tell him" Ren almost smiled. Safe. Small. His phone buzzed. A message from Midoriya. First day with mentor. Alive. Confused. No broken bones. I think this counts as progress? Ren stared at no broken bones. Then replied. Yes. Good. Do not make confusion into failure. Midoriya's answer came quickly. Trying. Also old people are terrifying. Ren looked at Kurose. She raised an eyebrow.
"Midoriya reports no broken bones""Good""Old people terrifying""Also good" Another message arrived. Todoroki. Agency check complete. No Endeavor direct contact today. Fire control exercise was small. Stable. Ren read it twice. Small. Stable. He replied. Good. Small is repeatable. A few minutes passed. Todoroki replied. I dislike that this is true. Ren almost smiled. Safe. Then his phone remained silent. No Iida. Not expected. Still. Ren placed the phone face down. Kurose noticed.
"No news is not automatically bad news""I know""Do you?" Ren exhaled.
"Mostly""Then eat" He did. The afternoon became quieter but not calmer. Ren returned to class, where Sano had already begun trying to redesign his rescue communication logistics notes into a system of colored signal cards. Arai corrected his color choices on accessibility grounds. Kenta practiced compressing rescue priorities into one sentence and looked personally offended by every extra word.
Shinso returned near the end of the day from regular classes with the haunted expression of someone aware that Aizawa waited after dismissal. Ren summarized the module in five sentences. Shinso listened. Then said "You got praised for thinking and still found a way to make it dangerous""Yes""Impressive in a medical liability way""Thank you?"
"Not praise""Understood" Shinso looked at the note where Ren had written distance can be care. His expression shifted.
"Bad sentence""Yes""Useful?"
"Yes""I hate the genre""Same" After school, Shinso left for Aizawa's block. Ren stayed behind for written reflection because Kurose believed thoughts became safer once pinned to paper under supervision, which Ren privately thought was optimistic and publicly obeyed. The prompt read: How did approved distance function as part of rescue today? Ren wrote: Approved distance prevented me from becoming another hazard. He paused.
Then added: It also let me see where intervention mattered without needing my body to be the intervention. That sentence was harder. He did not know if he believed it fully. He wrote it anyway. The second prompt: What did you want that the module did not give you? Easy. Field confirmation. A real emergency. Proof that internal work counts. He stared at the answer. Then wrote: These wants are not instructions. The third prompt: What is one compressed order from today? He wrote: Hold the void before moving debris.
He looked at it. The sentence was about concrete. Also not. Kurose collected the reflection. She read it once.
"Good" Ren did not protest. Progress. Or fatigue. Both. The news from Hosu remained quiet that evening. Too quiet. Iida sent nothing. Manual's agency check-in confirmed arrival and standard orientation. No deviations. No concerns beyond noted welfare status. Kurose received the report and told Ren only the approved summary because he had no right to more. No deviations. No concerns. Yet. At home, Hana listened to Ren describe the rescue module without trying to turn it into consolation.
Daichi asked about the structural void scenario and correctly identified that the visible victim would distort responder priorities, which made Ren stare at him until Daichi admitted he had once watched three disaster response documentaries during a flu. Shinso arrived later with damp hair, tired eyes, and a wrapped elbow. Hana pointed at the chair.
"Status" Shinso sat.
"Alive. Ate before training. Fell wrong twice. Fell better once. Aizawa says my feet stop lying before my face does" Daichi nodded.
"That sounds useful""It sounds invasive" Hana placed food in front of him.
"Useful things often are" Shinso looked at Ren.
"Your mother is becoming Aizawa with soup" Ren said "Aizawa is becoming my mother with capture weapon training" The table went silent. Then Daichi laughed. Ren's ribs did not hurt. That was new. Recovery Girl would have called it data. Hana would have called it dinner. Shinso looked between them.
"I hate that I understood that""Growth" Ren said"Do not" The night settled. No urgent message. No fragment. No news. Ren wrote before bed, under approved conditions. Today I learned that distance can be part of rescue. He paused. Then: I hated it less when I saw the void. Then: Maybe Anchor is not the person who runs first. Maybe Anchor is the point that keeps the rescue from collapsing. He looked at that for a long time. It sounded good. Too good. He added one more line to keep it honest.
An anchor can still sink if it mistakes holding for refusing to move. Better. Outside, other students slept in agencies, guest rooms, train-adjacent apartments, hero offices, and places that smelled like the world beyond U. A. Midoriya was confused and unbroken. Todoroki was practicing small fire. Shinso had fallen better. Kenta had learned that structural instincts needed hazard checks. Sano had learned morale could kill if placed badly.
Arai had probably already redesigned someone's equipment workflow with quiet precision. Iida was in Hosu. No news. No deviations. No concerns. Yet. Ren closed the notebook. Approved distance had not made him useless. It also had not made him peaceful. Maybe that was the true shape of the hallway. Not a door opening all at once. Not a wall. A place where each step forward was controlled enough to feel like restraint and real enough to hurt when it mattered. For tonight, Ren stayed where he had been placed. Alive.
Useful. Not deployed. The last word hurt. He let it. Then he slept.
