Chương 39: The First Sentence
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 160 chương · ~42 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The ring looked smaller with two people inside it. That was the lie of direct combat. From the stands, from the cameras, from the commentary booth, a tournament match became clean. One student against one student. Clear boundaries. Clear conditions. Out of bounds, immobilization, surrender, referee stoppage. Win or lose. Advancement or elimination. A shape simple enough for a crowd to understand without needing to know what the body had cost before stepping onto the floor. Ren Akiyama knew better.
A ring was not simple. A ring was a room with no corners pretending to be fair. It held everything the competitors brought into it. Training. Fear. Quirk mechanics. Family. Shame. Public expectation. Injury. Resentment. The exact shape of every door that had closed before the match began. Izuku Midoriya stood on one side, hands loose at his sides, shoulders tense in the way people became tense when told not to do the thing their whole body wanted to do.
He wore the face of someone trying very hard not to answer a question that had not been asked yet. Hitoshi Shinso stood opposite him, hands in his pockets, posture lazy enough to be false, eyes half-lidded against a stadium that had already decided his Quirk was the most interesting danger in the ring. The crowd leaned forward.
Ren sat in the participant observation section with his elbows on his knees, yellow card in his pocket, ribs at a stable four after rest, scar quiet, attention sharpened until the stadium seemed to narrow around the first match. Shinso vs Midoriya. General Studies vs Hero Course. Voice vs miracle. The framing was too clean. Therefore dangerous. Beside Ren, Kenta sat with a towel around his neck and one shoulder wrapped in a precautionary compression sleeve.
Sano sat on his other side despite being eliminated, knee brace propped forward like an accusation against fate. Arai sat slightly behind them with her dampeners on, eyes fixed on the ring. Kurose stood three rows below with a tablet, pretending not to supervise every breath. Uraraka stood near the Hero Course section, hands clasped so tightly Ren could see white at her knuckles even from a distance. Iida stood beside her, rigid with restraint.
All Might was not visible in hero form from Ren's angle, but somewhere in the faculty area, the Symbol or the man behind him was watching. Aizawa's voice came through the commentary system before Present Mic could begin the match hype.
"The first sentence matters" Present Mic laughed.
"Straight to the point from Eraser Head! And he's right! Shinso's Brainwashing activates when a target verbally responds to him! Midoriya had better keep his mouth shut if he wants to stay in this tournament!" The crowd reacted in layers. Some gasps. Some cheers. Some murmurs that sounded too close to fear. Shinso's face did not change. Ren watched his hands. No movement. Good. Maybe. Midnight lifted one arm.
"First match! Midoriya Izuku versus Shinso Hitoshi!" Midoriya swallowed. Shinso smiled slightly. It did not reach his eyes. The stadium lights reflected against the ring boundary. Ren breathed in. Three. Held. Out. Midnight's arm dropped.
"Begin!" For one full second, neither moved. That was Shinso's terrain. Silence as pressure. Midoriya knew the rule. The whole stadium knew the rule. The obvious strategy was to say nothing. Obvious did not mean easy. Silence became heavier with every heartbeat because everyone watching knew that one word could end the match. Shinso took the first step. Slow. Unthreatening. A boy crossing a schoolyard, not a fighter closing distance.
"You look nervous" Midoriya said nothing. Good. Shinso walked slightly left. Not circling fast enough to be called aggressive. Just enough to make Midoriya adjust his stance.
"Fair. I would be too. First place in the opening event. Ten million points. Everyone chasing you. And now the first thing they tell you is not to answer the guy in front of you" Midoriya's mouth tightened. No answer. Present Mic whispered loudly into the microphone.
"Midoriya is staying quiet! Smart move!" Aizawa said "Now he has to keep doing it while moving" Shinso tilted his head.
"You know silence is also an answer, right?" Midoriya's eyes narrowed. Still no response. Shinso's smile sharpened.
"Not for my Quirk. Relax" A few people in the crowd laughed nervously. Ren did not. Shinso was testing rhythm. Not baiting yet. Mapping. He stepped right. Midoriya mirrored. Careful foot placement. No obvious Quirk activation. Hands open. Breath controlled but too high in the chest. Ren's fingers twitched toward a notebook that was not there. Small activation. Mundane movement. Pain as failed parameter. Do not answer. Shinso continued.
"You're better at this than people said" Midoriya said nothing.
"People make you sound like a muttering disaster with good intentions" Midoriya's face reddened. No answer. Sano whispered "That one almost got him" Ren said "Yes" Kenta leaned forward.
"Shinso's barely moving""He does not need to yet" In the ring, Shinso stopped walking.
"You know what everyone's thinking?" Midoriya's shoulders tensed. Shinso's voice remained mild.
"They're thinking this should be easy for you if you don't talk. Hero Course. First place. Big hidden power. All you have to do is close distance and shove me out" Midoriya's eyes sharpened at hidden power. Still no answer. Ren's pulse changed. Shinso did not know. Not really. But he saw enough. Everyone saw something. Shinso placed one hand lightly against his own chest.
"I'm not strong like Todoroki. I don't hit like Bakugo. I can't run like Iida. I don't even need you to fear me physically" He let the sentence hang. Then softly"I just need one word" The crowd went quieter. The pressure worked even on people who were not in the ring. Midoriya took one step forward. Good. Movement over conversation. Shinso backed up at an angle. Midoriya followed. Not rushing. Not overcommitting. All Might's revised training showed in small ways now.
Izuku's hands did not curl into fists immediately. His shoulders did not rise as high. He was trying to hold the body together before asking anything impossible from it. Small could be heroic. Shinso saw the approach and changed tactics.
"Are you going to beat me without saying a word?" Midoriya stayed silent.
"That's probably safest. No conversation with the scary Quirk. Keep the villain voice at a distance" A ripple moved through the stadium. There. Shinso had named the crowd's fear before it could fully settle. Not punishment. Exposure. Maybe both. Ren watched his face. Green-yellow. Midoriya's jaw tightened. No answer. Shinso's eyes flicked toward the Hero Course section.
"Your class must have warned you" Silence.
"Your teachers too" Silence.
"Aizawa-sensei probably did it in three words" Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? This novel is from Royal Road. Support the author by reading it there. Aizawa's voice came flatly through the speakers.
"I did" Present Mic laughed. The crowd laughed too. Midoriya's eyes widened for a fraction. Still no answer. Shinso had almost smiled at the commentary interruption. Not enough to lose focus. He stepped backward again. Closer to the ring edge now, but not trapped. He was pulling Midoriya into a line where Midoriya's forward pressure could become predictable. Ren saw it. So did Aizawa, probably. Midoriya moved forward. Shinso spoke.
"You know Akiyama would have made more sense in your course than you did" The effect was immediate. Uraraka's hands jerked. Iida stiffened. Kenta said "Oh" Sano whispered "Damn" Ren went still. Midoriya stopped. His face changed. Not anger first. Pain. Recognition. The question he had been asking alone in his room had just been spoken aloud in front of a stadium. Shinso did not look at Ren. Good. If he had, it would have become punishment. Maybe it already was close. Midoriya breathed once. Silence.
Shinso kept his voice level.
"He trained longer. Planned better. Saved people without a flashy Quirk. Reads the field faster than most of us breathe. If U. A. had measured the right things, maybe he would have been standing where you are from the start" Midoriya's mouth opened. Closed. Ren's own breathing stopped for half a second. Do not answer. Do not answer. Do not answer. Shinso's eyes did not leave Midoriya's.
"So what makes you different?" The sentence hit too many wounds at once. Hero Course. Miracle. One For All. Ren. Worth. Door. Midoriya answered.
"I know" The stadium seemed to fall silent around the two words. Shinso's Quirk took hold. Midoriya's eyes went blank. The crowd erupted. Present Mic shouted "HE ANSWERED! MIDORIYA ANSWERED! SHINSO HAS HIM!" Aizawa's voice cut through, sharper than before.
"Watch the command" Shinso's face changed. For one fraction of a second, victory was there. Raw. Bright. Terrible. He had him. First place. Hero Course. The miracle boy. One sentence. One word. The door open. Then Shinso spoke.
"Walk out of bounds" Safe. Limited. Direct. No humiliation. No command to kneel. No command to praise him. No punishment. Just win. Ren exhaled. Good. The word hurt. Midoriya turned. He began walking toward the edge of the ring. The stadium rose in disbelief. Uraraka shouted something that the crowd swallowed. Iida stepped forward before stopping himself. Kurose's eyes were fixed on Shinso. Aizawa said "Clean command" Present Mic, voice lower despite himself, said "Midoriya's walking! He's actually walking out!"
Shinso stood in the center of the ring with one hand still in his pocket. His other hand had curled at his side. Ren saw it. Tension. Need. Hope. Not cruelty. Midoriya walked. One step. Two. Three. His body moved without him. Ren watched the gait. No bracing. No intention. Controlled motor action through Quirk command. But underneath it— Something flickered. Not visible at first. A change in the air around his fingers. A tremor beneath skin. Green light did not flare like an attack. It pulsed. Small. Mundane.
Refusal training? No. Deeper. Not Midoriya choosing. Not exactly. Ren's scar prickled. Not heat. Awareness. Midoriya reached the edge. One more step. His foot lifted. Then stopped. His fingers twitched. A thread of green light cracked across his hand and died before becoming power. Pain crossed his face. Small. Enough. His eyes snapped clear. He stumbled backward from the boundary. The stadium detonated. Present Mic screamed "HE BROKE IT! MIDORIYA BROKE SHINSO'S CONTROL AT THE EDGE!" Aizawa's voice was clipped.
"Physical stimulus through Quirk activation. No visible fracture" Ren's heart struck once hard against his ribs. No visible fracture. But that was not the whole thing. He had seen Midoriya's hand move before Midoriya returned. He had seen the power answer in a way that felt less like muscle and more like inheritance pulling the body away from a cliff. Not simple force. Not only Quirk activation. Something inside the power had pushed back. Ren looked toward the faculty area. He could not see All Might.
He imagined the thin man standing in shadow, cloth in hand, fear and relief becoming indistinguishable. In the ring, Midoriya stared at his own hand. Then at Shinso. He almost spoke. Stopped. Good. Very good. Shinso's face had gone white under the stadium lights. For half a second, he looked younger than he ever allowed himself to look. Then he smiled. It was sharp. It was not happy.
"So you can break out" Midoriya did not answer. Shinso laughed once. No humor.
"Good" Midoriya flinched at the word. Then steadied. He raised his hands into a guarded stance. No words. Shinso rolled his shoulders.
"Now you have to beat me without giving me another one" Midoriya moved. No Quirk burst. No smash. He closed distance with ordinary speed, which meant Shinso had time to retreat but not enough room forever. Shinso shifted left, trying to draw him into another line. Midoriya adjusted. Shinso feinted forward. Midoriya did not flinch verbally, but his eyes tracked the shoulders. Good. Improving. Shinso spoke again.
"Does it bother you that your body had to save you from answering?" No answer. Midoriya stepped closer. Shinso clicked his tongue.
"It should" No answer. Midoriya lunged. Not elegant. Better than before. He grabbed for Shinso's sleeve. Shinso twisted away, using the momentum to step behind Midoriya's right side. He was not strong, but he had trained enough not to collapse immediately under contact. He shoved at Midoriya's shoulder, trying to turn him toward the boundary. Midoriya slid one foot back. Small activation flashed in his calf. Not enough to launch. Enough to stabilize. No break. He caught Shinso's wrist. Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Let go" Midoriya's mouth tightened. He did not answer. He pulled. Shinso stepped with the pull rather than against it and slammed his shoulder into Midoriya's chest. It was not powerful. It was timed. Midoriya stumbled half a step. The crowd gasped. Shinso almost reached his back. Midoriya dropped his weight before Shinso could push him out. Aizawa said "Shinso's not helpless physically. But the strength gap is real" Present Mic shouted "Midoriya's keeping quiet and keeping low!
This is less flashy than the minefield, but folks, that kid is learning!" Ren almost smiled. Almost. Shinso tried again.
"You know if you say one thing, I win" Midoriya stayed silent.
"Not even to defend him?" Midoriya's eyes flickered. Shinso pushed.
"Akiyama, I mean. Not All Might. Not your class. Him. You know people are comparing you two already" Midoriya's hand tightened on Shinso's sleeve. No answer.
"You know part of you agrees with them" There it was. More dangerous. Closer to punishment. Ren's fingers tightened on his knee. Kurose leaned forward from below. Shinso's jaw tightened as if he heard her without hearing. He stopped. A choice. He changed angle.
"Too bad silence is the method today" Midoriya's eyes sharpened. Not answer. Action. He stepped in, hooked Shinso's arm, and turned his hip. It was basic. Too basic to be beautiful. Effective because Shinso had expected hesitation. Shinso hit the mat on one knee. Not out. Midoriya released immediately and backed up. That release cost him position. Mercy. No. Ethical habit. Potential weakness. Shinso used it.
He surged forward from the knee and grabbed Midoriya's uniform sleeve, trying to pull him toward the boundary. Midoriya's foot crossed near the edge. The crowd screamed. Ren stood halfway before realizing. Ribs protested. Kenta grabbed his sleeve.
"Sit" Ren sat. Yellow. Idiot. Sano whispered "Everyone's an idiot today" In the ring, Midoriya's heel hovered at the edge. Shinso shoved with both hands. Midoriya activated. Small. A flicker through legs and core, controlled enough that the mat cracked only faintly under his rear foot. He did not launch. He anchored. Then he moved. Not smash. Step. Turn. Push. Shinso's eyes widened.
Midoriya used Shinso's own forward pressure, rotated, and drove him toward the boundary with one shoulder and one hand against his chest. Shinso tried to speak. Midoriya shut his eyes. The crowd noise vanished from Ren's perception. Only the ring remained. Midoriya did not answer. He pushed. Shinso's heel crossed the white line. Then his other foot. Midnight's arm rose.
"Shinso is out of bounds! Midoriya advances!" The stadium erupted. Midoriya released Shinso immediately. Too immediately. Shinso stumbled outside the ring, caught himself, and stood with his head lowered. The match was over. Midoriya had won. No fractures. No apology. No answer after the first. For one moment, no one in the participant section spoke. Then Present Mic's voice roared over the stadium.
"MIDORIYA IZUKU TAKES THE FIRST MATCH! But let's hear it for Shinso Hitoshi! That was one sentence away from the biggest upset of the tournament!" Aizawa's voice followed, quieter but much heavier.
"Shinso controlled the match opening, used a safe command, adjusted after failure, and forced Midoriya to win with discipline rather than damage. That was a good performance" The stadium reacted. Not uniformly. Some cheers for Midoriya. Some applause for Shinso. Some murmurs that did not know where to place the boy who had almost made first place walk out calmly. Then, from the General Studies section, a louder cheer rose. Class 1-C. Maybe more. Shinso did not look up.
Midoriya stood inside the ring breathing hard, hands shaking slightly, staring at Shinso with an expression too complicated for broadcast. Midnight announced the official result again. The bracket updated. Midoriya advanced. Shinso eliminated. The line was clean. The ring was not. Ren stood slowly this time. Kenta did not stop him. Ribs four. Stable. He made his way down toward the exit tunnel where competitors left the ring. Kurose moved from the other side. They reached the corridor almost simultaneously.
Shinso entered first. He stopped when he saw them. His face was blank. Too blank. Kurose spoke before Ren could.
"Status" Shinso looked at her. Then away.
"Green-yellow. Throat dry. No injury. Ethical boundary maintained enough to be annoying" Kurose nodded.
"You used one borderline provocation. You stopped before it became punishment" His jaw tightened.
"Yes""Good" He flinched. Not from the word. From needing it. Ren looked at him.
"You had him" Shinso's eyes snapped to him. The corridor seemed to narrow.
"I lost""Yes""You just said I had him""Yes""Pick one""Both are true" Shinso looked furious.
"Very helpful""You made first place walk out""He stopped""Not by strategy" Shinso went still. Kurose's gaze moved to Ren sharply. Ren chose words with care.
"Something inside his Quirk produced physical stimulus before full conscious recovery. You forced a condition that revealed unusual resistance mechanics. That is not a failure of your Quirk" Shinso stared.
"Unusual resistance mechanics" Ren said "Yes""That's your way of saying miracle nonsense" Ren did not answer. Kurose did not ask. Shinso laughed once, sharp and bitter.
"Of course. Hero Course miracle nonsense beats General Studies voice" Kurose said "Shinso" He stopped. Breathing hard. His hands shook. Then he shoved them into his pockets.
"Yellow" The word was raw. Kurose nodded.
"What do you do?" He closed his eyes.
"Orient. Stop talking before I make it worse. Drink water. Sit somewhere not full of cameras""Good" He opened his eyes and looked like he hated her for being right. Ren said "I will sit with you if wanted. I will not if not wanted" Shinso looked at him. His mouth twisted.
"That sentence is terrible""Yes""Come on" Ren nodded. Kurose stepped aside.
"Medical rest area. Both of you. Akiyama, report your standing spike" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes, sensei" Shinso looked at him.
"You stood?"
"Briefly""Idiot""Yes" The answer made Shinso's expression crack for half a second. Not amusement exactly. Less collapse. They walked to the rest area. Shinso sat first, elbows on knees, head low. Ren sat beside him with enough space between them that leaving remained possible. For several minutes, they listened to the stadium roar around replays. Midoriya answering. Midoriya walking. Midoriya stopping at the edge. Green flicker. Push. Out of bounds. Every replay turned Shinso's almost-victory into public education.
Ren disliked that. Shinso probably hated it. Finally, Shinso said "I used you" Ren looked at him.
"In the bait""Yes""Was that red?" Ren considered.
"No" Shinso's head turned slightly.
"Don't make me feel better""I am answering accurately. It was yellow. Borderline. You stated a comparison already present in the field. You did not lie. You did not instruct humiliation. You stopped before pressing it into punishment after he recovered" Shinso was quiet. Then"I wanted to""I know""You don't""I do" Shinso looked at him. Ren kept his voice low.
"I wanted Todoroki to be proof before I saw the bracket. Wanting is not action" Shinso stared for a long moment. Then looked down.
"Disgusting""Yes""Useful""Yes" Another silence. Then Shinso said "He said he knew" Ren nodded.
"Yes""That's what got him""Yes""He believes it" Ren did not answer too fast.
"Part of him does" Shinso's voice went quieter.
"And part of you?" Ren looked at the floor. Part of him had believed it since the entrance exam. Ren would have made more sense in Hero Course than Izuku did. Not because Izuku lacked heart. Because Ren had built a life around trying to make a door open without needing a miracle. Because Izuku had received one. Because resentment did not vanish just because he had decided not to let it drive.
"Yes" Ren said Shinso exhaled.
"Great""It does not mean Midoriya does not belong""I know""It does not mean I belong more" Shinso looked at him. Ren forced the next sentence out.
"It means the system measured badly and then fate corrected one student differently from another. That is not Midoriya's fault" Shinso's expression changed.
"You sound like you hate that sentence""I do""But you said it""Yes" Shinso leaned back.
"Annoyingly healthy""Temporary""Don't undo it before Todoroki" Ren looked toward the corridor. The future waited there. Cold. Bright.
"Trying" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Method" Ren nodded.
"Method" A soft voice interrupted.
"Can I" Both looked up. Midoriya stood at the entrance to the rest area. He had been checked quickly, apparently. No visible injury. Hands intact. Eyes too bright with adrenaline, guilt, and something like fear. Kurose stood behind him at a distance, which meant permission had been requested and granted. Shinso looked at him.
"Match is over. You can talk now" Midoriya flinched. Then nodded.
"I know" Ren watched carefully. Midoriya stepped closer, but not too close.
"Good match" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"You won. You don't need to be generous" Midoriya shook his head.
"I'm not being generous. You almost beat me before I understood what was happening""That's the point""Yes" Midoriya looked at his own hand.
"I don't fully know how I broke out" Ren's attention sharpened. Shinso's eyes flicked toward him. Midoriya continued.
"It wasn't just me deciding. I think. I felt something move. Or maybe I made it move because I panicked. I don't know" Honest. Too honest. Dangerous. Ren said "Report to All Might and Recovery Girl" Midoriya nodded quickly.
"I will" Shinso looked at him.
"You always explain the worst possible amount" Midoriya blinked.
"Sorry. No. I mean. I'm trying to be honest" Shinso sighed.
"Terrible habit" Midoriya looked at him directly.
"What you said. About Ren making more sense" The air tightened. Ren said "Midoriya" Izuku shook his head slightly. Not refusing. Continuing.
"I thought that too" Shinso went still. Midoriya's hands trembled once. He clasped them carefully.
"But I don't think that means he should have my place instead of me. I think it means U. A. should have had a better way to see him. And you. And maybe a lot of people" Shinso stared. Ren looked down. Unfair. Kind. Painful. Midoriya continued.
"I'm glad you fought seriously. I'm glad you used your Quirk seriously. I was scared. But not because I thought you were villainous. Because you could beat me" Shinso's throat moved. The silence after that was worse than insult. Finally, he said "You are impossible to hate properly" Midoriya looked startled.
"Um. Thank you?"
"It wasn't a compliment" Ren said "It partially was" Shinso glared. Midoriya smiled despite himself. Small. Then he bowed. Not too deep. Not like apology. Like respect.
"Thank you for the match" Shinso looked away.
"Get out before I become gracious" Midoriya nodded.
"Good luck, Ren" Ren looked up.
"Rest""I will""Report the abnormal break""I will""Eat" Midoriya blinked. Then laughed softly.
"Okay" He left. Kurose watched him go, then looked at Ren and Shinso. No lecture. Not yet. Mercy again. Shinso waited until Midoriya was gone before saying "He really is like that" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Awful""Yes""You like him""Yes""You resent him""Yes""Both?"
"Yes" Shinso leaned back and closed his eyes.
"Good. I was worried you'd become simple" Ren almost smiled. Carefully. The second match was called soon after. Bakugo vs Uraraka. The stadium roared. Shinso did not move. He was eliminated. That fact had finally begun to settle. Ren still had a match ahead. That fact had not. Kurose approached before Ren could stand.
"Medical recheck after Bakugo-Uraraka begins. You do not watch the whole match if symptoms rise" Ren said "Yes, sensei" Shinso opened one eye.
"Don't make Todoroki your answer" Ren looked at him.
"You lost and are still supervising me?"
"Spite is versatile" Kurose said "And occasionally useful" Shinso looked offended. Ren stood slowly. Ribs four. Scar quiet. Mind yellow. The tournament had begun with the first sentence. Shinso had lost. Midoriya had advanced. The crowd had learned that Brainwashing could almost defeat the first-place student and that almost was not the same as nothing. Ren had learned that something inside Midoriya's power could move like memory.
And somewhere ahead, on a line already drawn by the bracket, Todoroki Shoto waited with ice, silence, and the shape of a match Ren had been trying not to turn into destiny. He touched the yellow card in his pocket. Not red. Not proof. Method. He walked toward medical before anyone had to drag him there. That, at least, was one small victory nobody would replay on the giant screen.
