Chương 28: Rescue Support

The words looked wrong because they were clean. Hitoshi Shinso had always distrusted clean words. Clean words were what adults used when they wanted the mess to stop touching them. Troubled. Difficult. Concerning. Unsuitable. Promising but. Requires supervision. Needs monitoring. Strong Quirk but poor fit. Dangerous potential. Villainous application. Sensitive case. Clean words did not hit like insults. That made them worse. Insults had teeth. You could feel where they bit. Clean words entered files.
Files lasted longer. Shinso sat across from Kurose-sensei in a small administrative room with his hands in his pockets, one ankle hooked around the leg of the chair, and his face arranged into the expression that usually made adults stop asking whether he was comfortable. Kurose did not stop. That was one of her worse habits. The document sat on the table between them, printed on U. A. letterhead, clipped at the upper left corner, stamped provisional, reviewed, confidential. His name was on the first page.
Shinso Hitoshi. Class 1-C. Quirk: Brainwashing. Incident: USJ villain attack. Classification of Quirk Use: Emergency Rescue Support. He stared at the last three words until they stopped looking like language. Emergency Rescue Support. Not coercive intervention. Not unauthorized control. Not mental manipulation event. Not potential misconduct pending review. Not villainous. Support.
Kurose sat with her tablet beside the document and waited in the exact way she always waited when she wanted students to realize she had more patience than their defensive habits had stamina. Shinso hated that too. He looked up.
"Is this the part where I'm supposed to be grateful?" Kurose's eyes did not move from him.
"No" That was the wrong answer. He had prepared for yes. He had prepared to reject yes. He had not prepared for no. Kurose continued "This is the part where you read the record and tell me if any factual portion is inaccurate" Shinso looked back at the page.
"I used my Quirk on villains. They answered. I told them to stop, drop weapons, move away, or attack each other depending on the situation. Students got through doors. Nobody friendly got controlled. That's accurate""Then sign the factual confirmation on page three" He did not pick up the pen. The pen lay beside the document, dark blue, capped, ordinary. Too ordinary. Signing felt too much like agreement with something larger than accuracy. Kurose noticed. Of course.
She said "Signing confirms that the sequence is accurate. It does not require you to feel a specific way about it" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"What if the feeling is that this is stupid?"
"Then you may feel that while signing""That's flexible of you""I am known for warmth""No, you're not""Good. Then my reputation remains intact" His mouth twitched before he could stop it. Annoying. He looked down again. The document had sections. Summary of Events. Students Assisted. Hostile Actors Affected. Risk Assessment. Faculty Review. Recommended Language for Internal Record. Emergency Rescue Support. The phrase appeared more than once, as if repetition could nail it into reality.
Shinso read the first paragraph. During the USJ attack, Shinso Hitoshi of Class 1-C used his Quirk under immediate threat conditions to protect fellow students, delay hostile actors, disarm armed assailants, and assist evacuation into secured shelter. Available reports indicate that Quirk use was directed exclusively toward hostile actors and was limited to emergency necessity. His throat felt strange. He hated that. He turned the page before Kurose could see his face too clearly.
Another paragraph listed student statements. Kenta Mori reported that Shinso's intervention prevented a pursuing hostile from entering Staff Shelter B. Sano reported that Shinso's command caused an armed hostile to release a weapon. Arai reported that Shinso's Quirk use reduced hostile movement long enough for injured students to enter shelter. Akiyama Ren reported that Shinso's Quirk was decisive in delaying pursuit and preventing breach. Shinso stopped. Of course Akiyama had used the word decisive.
Of course he had made it sound like an incident report and a knife at the same time. Kurose said nothing. Shinso looked at the page until the letters blurred slightly, then forced them clear. Decisive. He did not know whether he wanted to tear the page or keep it. That was also annoying.
"So now it's rescue support" he said"Yes""Because villains were on the other side" Kurose watched him.
"Explain" He looked up.
"If I had used it on a student, it would be coercion. If I had used it before someone got hurt, it would be suspicious. If I had used it during a normal exercise, it would be dangerous potential. But villains attack, suddenly everyone likes the creepy Quirk because it points outward" Kurose let the words settle. Then she said "Partly correct" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"That wasn't an invitation""It became one when you said it in my room" He leaned back. Kurose tapped the document once.
"The context mattered. It always matters. The targets were hostile. The threat was immediate. Your commands were limited. The outcome protected students. That is why the record says rescue support""And if the context changes?"
"Then the judgment changes""So I'm right""You are incomplete" He hated that the phrasing sounded like Akiyama. Kurose continued "Yes, people are more willing to praise your Quirk when fear gives them a socially acceptable target. That is a problem. No, that does not make yesterday's record fake. Both things can be true" Shinso looked away. Outside the small room, U. A. moved through another modified day. Footsteps passed. A distant announcement reminded students that media contact remained prohibited.
Someone laughed in the hallway and then stopped too quickly, as if remembering laughter had become suspicious. Kurose said "You want the recognition to be either pure or meaningless" He said nothing.
"It is neither""Great""Yes. Reality often lacks clean branding" He looked back at her.
"Did Akiyama teach you to talk like that or did you teach him?" Kurose's mouth almost moved.
"An insulting question to both of us""Efficient though""Sign the page" He picked up the pen. Stopped again. Kurose looked at his hand.
"This record protects you" His grip tightened.
"Records can hurt too""Yes" At least she did not deny it. That helped. Worse. Both. She continued "That is why wording matters. That is why I pushed for this wording. That is why Principal Nezu accepted it. That is why the file states rescue support instead of simply Quirk use. If someone later attempts to flatten your action into something more convenient for their fear, this document becomes one thing we use to push back" Shinso looked at her.
"We?" Kurose did not soften.
"Yes" The word should not have mattered. It did. He hated that too. He signed. The pen moved too fast. The signature looked uglier than usual. Good. Maybe. Kurose took the document and placed it into the folder, but she did not close it.
"There is another section" He stared.
"Of course there is""This section does not require your signature. It concerns recommended support""No""You have not heard it""I heard support""Tragic. You survived" He leaned back. Kurose read from the page.
"Recommendations: continued monitoring for stress response following emergency mental Quirk use. Counseling support available. No unsupervised Quirk provocation exercises. No peer demonstrations of Brainwashing without faculty approval. Controlled opportunity to discuss heroic applications of verbal-response Quirks in Quirk law curriculum if and when student consents" Shinso blinked.
"What?" Kurose looked at him.
"Would you like me to repeat the entire sentence or the part that startled you?"
"The curriculum part""As I suspected" He frowned.
"You want to use me as a lesson?"
"No. I want to offer you the option of contributing to a lesson that prevents your classmates from being idiots about your Quirk. If you do not consent, I teach it without making you the center" That was also the wrong answer. Too careful. Too decent. Unfair. He looked at the closed edge of the folder.
"What would the lesson say?"
"That Quirk ethics depend on consent, context, target, proportionality, necessity, and accountability. That mental influence Quirks are not inherently villainous. That physical Quirks can also violate autonomy. That rescue work often requires temporary restriction of movement or choice, and the ethical question is not whether control exists but whether it is justified, limited, documented, and subject to review" Shinso stared.
Kurose continued "Also that jokes about mind control are lazy and reveal poor imagination" He looked away before his face could betray anything inconvenient.
"That last part sounds useful""I thought you might appreciate it" The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
"You thought a lot""It is my profession" The room went quiet again. This time it was less hostile. Shinso disliked that most. Kurose closed the folder.
"Take the copy in the blue envelope. Keep it somewhere safe. You may show it to a guardian, legal representative, therapist, or faculty member if needed. Do not post it. Do not use it to win arguments in hallways. Do not show it to students who only want details because they are curious" He took the blue envelope. It felt heavier than three pages should.
"What if someone asks?"
"Which someone?"
"Classmates""You can say the record is handled""And if they keep asking?"
"Tell me" He snorted.
"That sounds like tattling""No. It sounds like using the adult whose job includes stopping students from becoming social predators after a crisis""You make everything sound bureaucratic""You make everything sound like refusing help is a personality" He stared. Kurose stared back. He looked away first.
"Fine""Good" There it was. The word again. He stood too fast and regretted it only emotionally. His body was fine enough to resent that others were not. Akiyama would probably have had a pain number ready for standing. Idiot. Useful idiot. Annoying idiot. Alive idiot. Shinso picked up his bag and the blue envelope. At the door, Kurose spoke again.
"Shinso" He stopped.
"You did not become safe because the record says rescue support" His jaw tightened.
"I know""And you did not become dangerous because others once called your Quirk villainous" He did not turn around. That one went somewhere deeper. Kurose's voice remained even.
"You will have to learn to live without letting either label do your thinking for you" His hand stayed on the door handle. He wanted to say something sharp. Nothing came. So he opened the door and left. The hallway was too bright. U. A. hallways were always too bright, but after a conversation like that, brightness felt like an accusation. Students moved between modified classes under faculty supervision.
Posters about the upcoming Sports Festival had not yet been put back up, but empty display boards waited where they usually went. The blankness was almost worse. Everyone knew what was coming. No one was saying it loudly yet. Shinso slid the blue envelope into his bag, behind notebooks and beside the charger with the tape label still on it. SPARE — PHONE — USB-C He hated that he had not removed the label. He hated that he had kept the charger. He hated that it worked better than the broken one at his placement.
He hated that Mrs. Akiyama had known food mattered before asking whether he wanted help. He hated many things. Some were becoming less convincing. His phone buzzed. Akiyama. Status? Shinso stopped in the hallway. He typed: Alive. Akiyama replied: Physical, emotional, immediate need. Shinso stared. He typed: Did Kurose possess you? Akiyama: No. She assigned structure. Shinso: Tell her to leave your personality alone. It was already bad. Akiyama: Status? Shinso looked toward the classroom wing. Students passed.
A girl from 1-B glanced at him, looked away, glanced again. Probably recognized him from General Studies rumors. Maybe not. He was getting worse at guessing which stares belonged to which old fear. He typed: Physical fine. Emotional annoyed. Immediate need is for people to stop using welfare vocabulary. Akiyama: Partially accepted. Shinso: That was not for grading. Akiyama: Everything is data. Shinso: You're awful. Akiyama: Did you receive the record? Shinso looked at the bag. Of course. He typed: Yes.
Akiyama: Wording? Shinso hesitated. Emergency Rescue Support. He sent it. Akiyama did not respond immediately. That was suspicious. Then: Good. The word looked different from Akiyama. Less soft. More like confirmation of a line held. Shinso typed: It's just wording. Akiyama: Wording becomes record. Record becomes leverage. Leverage becomes protection if used correctly. Shinso read it twice. Then: That's the most you sentence you've ever sent. Akiyama: Accurate. A pause. Then another message came.
If someone attempts to erase context, we make the context impossible to erase. Shinso stared at the screen. We. Again. Kurose had used it. Now Akiyama. The word was becoming careless around him. He typed: Dramatic. Akiyama: Precise. Shinso put the phone away before the conversation became more useful than he wanted.
He walked toward the cafeteria because modified schedule had placed General Studies lunch earlier than Hero Course and because Kurose had told him to eat in a tone that suggested paperwork would happen if he did not. The cafeteria was quieter than before USJ. Rubber mats still softened tray return. Staff still pretended not to watch students too closely. Lunch Rush had added extra soup options, which everyone was pretending was normal and not recovery infrastructure. Shinso took food. Rice. Soup. Fish.
A packaged sweet he did not remember selecting. He found a table near the edge. Not alone enough to look dramatic. Not central enough to invite conversation. Perfect. Naturally, Akiyama arrived two minutes later with Kenta, Sano, Arai, Nana, and Reina.
"Of course" Shinso said Akiyama looked at the empty seats.
"This table has adequate space""It did" Kenta sat across from him.
"You look like someone handed you homework with feelings in it" Shinso stared. Sano lowered himself beside Kenta, knee brace visible.
"That is terrifyingly specific" Arai sat quietly with a tray of soup and steamed vegetables. Nana and Reina sat together at the end. Akiyama sat slowly, right hand braced against the edge of the table. Shinso watched the movement. Akiyama noticed.
"Ribs stable""I didn't ask""You looked""You look like a cautionary poster" Akiyama considered.
"Unflattering but not inaccurate" Kenta pointed his chopsticks at Shinso's bag.
"You had the record meeting, right?" The table shifted. Shinso's grip on his spoon tightened. Akiyama looked at Kenta. Kenta lifted both hands.
"I'm asking because mine is tomorrow and I want to know if it sucks" Shinso studied him. Kenta looked back without flinching. Not curious like a tourist. Nervous like someone waiting his turn. Fine.
"It sucks" Shinso said Kenta nodded.
"Thought so" Sano leaned forward.
"Did they write the Quirk stuff correctly?" Shinso's eyes narrowed. Sano rolled his eyes.
"I mean because if they didn't, Kurose should fix it. Not because I want your file" Arai said softly "It matters" Shinso looked at her. Her wrapped horns rested against her hair, small strips of fabric visible where skin still looked irritated. She stirred her soup without eating.
"If they write it wrong, people remember it wrong" she said That was a sentence with weight. Maybe all of 1-C had started speaking in aftermath sentences. Shinso looked down at his tray.
"They wrote emergency rescue support" Nana smiled before catching herself.
"That's good" He looked at her. She stiffened. Then said "I mean. If you think it is" Akiyama said "It is good wording" Shinso looked at him.
"You would like wording""Yes" Kenta leaned back.
"Emergency rescue support sounds official as hell" Sano nodded.
"Better than brain guy stopped knife guy""That is also accurate" Shinso said Arai said "Less protective" The table went quiet. Again. Shinso stabbed the fish with his chopsticks.
"You all went to one welfare meeting and became terrible" Akiyama said "We were terrible before""That's fair" For a few minutes, they ate. It almost worked. Then a boy from another 1-C cluster approached the table with two friends behind him. Harada, if Shinso remembered correctly. Not in Shelter B. Fire Zone? Maybe. Loud in ordinary weeks. Quieter since USJ, but not enough.
"Hey, Shinso" Shinso looked up. Akiyama's posture changed by half a centimeter. Kenta noticed. Sano noticed Kenta noticing. Everyone was becoming exhausting. Harada rubbed the back of his neck.
"I heard your record came through" Shinso said "Did you?"
"Yeah. I mean, people are saying you used Brainwashing on villains" Shinso waited. Harada smiled awkwardly.
"That's kind of awesome" Akiyama's eyes sharpened. Shinso did not react. Harada continued, encouraged by his own discomfort.
"I mean, I always thought your Quirk was scary, but it was actually useful, you know?" The table went cold. Arai looked down. Nana's face tightened. Kenta's chopsticks stopped halfway to his mouth. Akiyama's expression went blank in the way that meant not blank at all. Shinso smiled. It was easy. Too easy.
"Actually useful?" Harada paled a little.
"I didn't mean""No, say it" Akiyama said "Shinso" Shinso ignored him.
"You mean it was creepy before, but then villains attacked and suddenly it had acceptable direction?" Harada took half a step back.
"That's not what I" Sano said "It is kind of what you said" Kenta muttered "Badly" Harada flushed.
"I was trying to compliment him" Shinso stood. Not fast. Not dramatically. Enough. The cafeteria around them noticed. Of course it noticed. It always did when Brainwashing stood up. Shinso leaned his hands on the table.
"That's the problem" Harada swallowed. A faculty member near the wall began moving. Akiyama stood too, slower, one hand on the table.
"Sit" Shinso said without looking at him Akiyama did not. Stubborn injured idiot. Harada lifted both hands.
"Look, I'm sorry" The word hit Shinso wrong. Because it was probably genuine. Because it was too late. Because it did not know what it was apologizing for. Before Shinso could answer, Kurose's voice cut through the cafeteria from three tables away.
"Harada" Everyone froze. Kurose approached with the calm of an incoming legal consequence. Harada went rigid.
"Yes, sensei""What did you mean by actually useful?" Harada looked like he wanted the floor to make a merciful exception and swallow him.
"I meant. I meant his Quirk helped. At USJ. I didn't mean it was useless before""Then say that" Harada looked at Shinso. His face was red.
"Your Quirk helped at USJ. I said it badly" Kurose said "Continue" Harada's eyes widened.
"There's more?"
"Yes" He looked pained.
"I shouldn't have said actually useful like it had to prove it wasn't scary" Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Acceptable?" Shinso stared at her.
"You're making me grade apologies now?"
"I am asking whether you need further correction or want to end the interaction" Harada looked miserable. The cafeteria was still watching. Shinso hated that most. He sat.
"End it" Kurose nodded.
"Harada. Return to your table. Consider language before it exits your mouth""Yes, sensei" Harada retreated with his friends. The cafeteria slowly remembered how to pretend it had not watched. Kurose looked at Shinso. Then at Akiyama, still standing.
"Akiyama. Why are you vertical?" Akiyama looked down, as if surprised by his own body.
"Unclear""Sit" He sat. Pain crossed his face for one second. Shinso noticed. So did Kurose. She stared at him.
"Medical wing after lunch" Akiyama closed his eyes.
"Yes, sensei" Kurose looked at Shinso.
"You?" Shinso expected reprimand. He deserved one, probably. Instead she asked "Do you need removal?" He looked around the cafeteria. At students not looking. At his tray. At the table full of people who had gone too quiet. At the blue envelope in his bag. At Akiyama, who had stood despite medical restrictions because Harada said the wrong thing too loudly.
"No""Do you need space?" He hated that the answer was yes. He hated more that the answer was not only yes.
"No" Kurose held his gaze for one second.
"Accepted" Then she left. The table remained quiet. Kenta broke first.
"That was almost a disaster" Sano said "Only almost?" Arai looked at Shinso.
"It was badly said" He looked back.
"Yes""But he corrected""Yes""That matters" Shinso looked at his food.
"Maybe" Akiyama said "It does. It does not erase the first statement" Shinso looked at him. There. Context impossible to erase. Also correction impossible to erase. Annoying. True. Kenta pointed at Akiyama.
"And you stood up, which was stupid" Akiyama said "Yes" Everyone looked at him. He frowned.
"What?" Sano said "Did you just admit that?"
"I have been instructed to identify unsafe action faster" Shinso said "Hostage negotiator is evolving him" Akiyama looked offended. Nana covered her mouth. Reina smiled. The table breathed again. Not fully. Enough. After lunch, Akiyama was dragged to the medical wing by Kurose's authority and his own inability to argue without condemning himself. Shinso watched him go with the vague satisfaction of someone whose terrible friend was finally being managed by competent adults.
Then he remembered he had called Akiyama friend in his head. Unacceptable. He went to Quirk Law instead. The lesson was not about him. Technically. Kurose wrote three words on the board. Consent. Context. Control. The room shifted immediately. Shinso considered leaving. He did not. Kurose did not look at him when she began.
"Today we discuss ethical Quirk use under emergency conditions. No student in this room is an example unless they choose to become one. You will not volunteer another person's experience for discussion" That stopped at least three students from looking at Shinso. Good. Maybe. Kurose began with physical rescue. Heroes restraining panicking civilians during fire evacuation. Heroes breaking locked doors. Heroes using binding Quirks to stop someone from running into danger.
Heroes knocking unconscious an individual under villain influence. Heroes cutting clothing during medical care. Every example involved taking choice away in some form. That made the room uncomfortable. Good. Then she moved to mental and verbal Quirks. The discomfort changed flavor. Kurose saw it.
"Many people become more frightened when control is invisible" No one spoke.
"This is understandable. It is not the same as ethical analysis" She underlined context.
"Ethics does not ask only whether control happened. It asks who was controlled, why, for how long, under what threat, by what authority or necessity, with what oversight, with what documentation, with what alternatives, and with what consequences" Shinso stared at the board. This was not praise. That helped. It was harder to reject than praise because it had structure. Kurose wrote: Villainous Quirk ≠ Quirk that can violate autonomy. Then beneath it: Heroic Quirk ≠ Quirk that cannot violate autonomy.
Sano raised a hand. Kurose nodded.
"So a strength Quirk can be coercive""Yes""If someone grabs you and carries you out""Yes""But it can also save you""Yes""So Brainwashing is not special because it controls people. It's special because people notice that kind of control more" Kurose looked at him.
"Good" Sano leaned back, looking surprised at himself. Shinso did not look at him. He looked at the board. People notice that kind of control more. That was not absolution. Better. Absolution would have been useless. Kurose continued "Fear of a Quirk does not make the Quirk evil. Lack of fear does not make another Quirk safe. Any Quirk used without ethical boundaries can harm. Any Quirk used with necessity, proportionality, and accountability can protect" Shinso wrote that down. Then glared at the notebook.
The notebook did not apologize. After class, students left more quietly than usual. Harada lingered near the door. Shinso considered pretending not to see him. He did not. Harada approached with the cautious expression of someone walking toward a dog he had already offended.
"Hey" Shinso said "You survived considering language?" Harada winced.
"Barely""Tragic""I wanted to say it better. Your Quirk helped people at USJ. I'm glad you used it. That's all" Shinso watched him. No actually. No useful. No creepy. Still awkward. Better.
"Fine" Harada nodded. Then hesitated.
"Also, I still think it's scary" Sano, passing behind him, made a choking noise. Harada rushed "But so is Bakugo's and nobody makes him prove explosions can be heroic every time he breathes, so that's probably my problem to deal with" Shinso stared. That was irritatingly honest. He said "Yes" Harada nodded again.
"Cool. I mean not cool. I mean""Leave while you're ahead""Right" He left. Sano stopped beside Shinso.
"That was painful""Yes""Better though""Yes" Sano looked at him.
"For the record, I'd rather get Brainwashed than exploded" Shinso looked at him. Sano shrugged.
"What? Less property damage" Shinso almost smiled. Almost.
"Your knee brace looks heroic" Sano froze. Then his eyes widened.
"You absolute" Shinso walked away before the accusation could finish. That evening, U. A. transport was delayed again. Of course. Shinso stood under the covered walkway near the east entrance while rain threatened but did not commit. The blue envelope sat in his bag. The charger worked. The food from lunch sat too heavily in his stomach because he had actually eaten most of it. Kurose had disappeared into a meeting.
Akiyama had been taken home early after medical wing confirmed standing up at lunch had not damaged him further but had annoyed everyone medically involved. His phone buzzed. Akiyama. Medical wing confirmed no new injury. Hana says standing up for someone does not count as no sudden heroics if ribs are involved. Shinso stared. Then typed: Tell her I disagree. It was sudden idiocy, not heroics. Akiyama: She laughed. Shinso looked up from the phone. He could imagine it too easily. Mrs. Akiyama at a kitchen table.
Akiyama on a couch or chair, over-managed and pretending to dislike it more than he did. Mr. Akiyama labeling something no one else would label. Food too warm. Questions too practical. People checking whether a person ate because bodies mattered even when nothing dramatic was happening. His chest felt strange. He disliked that. A second message arrived. Hana asks whether you need transport today. Practical only. No pressure. Shinso looked toward the pickup area. Cars moved through under security watch.
Parents waited. Students left in groups. No one waited for him. U. A. transport would come. Eventually. Placement was not far from the station. Safe enough. He typed: No. Then deleted it. Typed: Transport coming. Deleted it. Typed: I'm fine. Deleted it because even he hated that one. Finally: Station would help if not inconvenient. He stared at the message. It looked like weakness. It looked like logistics. It looked like both. He sent it before he could undo it. Akiyama replied: Not inconvenient.
Daichi can come in twelve minutes. East entrance. Then: Hana says eat the sweet from lunch if you have not. Shinso looked in his bag. The packaged sweet was there. He had forgotten it. Of course. He typed: Your mother is impossible. Akiyama: Yes. Shinso opened the sweet. It tasted like red bean and humiliation and something warmer than either. Daichi's car arrived in fourteen minutes. Not twelve. Shinso noticed. He did not know why that mattered. Daichi lowered the window.
"Sorry. Traffic at the security exit" Shinso looked at him.
"You don't need to apologize for being two minutes late" Daichi considered that.
"Fair" Shinso got into the front seat because the back made his shoulders itch and because Daichi had not made it weird last time. The car smelled faintly of coffee and clean paper. A spare umbrella lay near the door. Labeled. FRONT PASSENGER. Shinso stared. Daichi followed his gaze.
"It prevents conflict""Does it?"
"In theory" Shinso looked out the windshield.
"Your family is insane" Daichi nodded.
"Accurate" They drove toward the station. For three minutes, there was only rain beginning softly against the glass and the hum of tires on wet road. Then Daichi said "Ren said your record meeting was today" Shinso's hand tightened around the strap of his bag.
"He shouldn't talk about my record""He didn't. He said it was today" Shinso looked out the window.
"Right" Daichi did not ask. That made Shinso want to answer. Terrible strategy. He said "They wrote rescue support" Daichi nodded.
"Good wording""You and your son are obsessed with wording""Wording is where adults hide decisions" Shinso looked at him. Daichi kept driving.
"That sounds like something Kurose-sensei would say""It sounds like something people with forms learn eventually" Shinso looked at the dashboard. The silence stretched. Not uncomfortable exactly. Not comfortable. Daichi did not fill it. That was probably why Shinso spoke again.
"It doesn't feel real" Daichi nodded once.
"The wording?"
"The rescue part" Daichi took a moment before answering.
"Do you think the students are alive?" Shinso looked at him sharply.
"Yes""Do you think your actions helped that happen?" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Yes""Then the rescue part is real. Feeling may take longer to catch up" The answer was too simple. Too practical. Worse, probably correct. Shinso looked away.
"You people do that""What?"
"Say things like they're obvious and then they stay in my head" Daichi smiled faintly.
"I'll try to use that power responsibly" Shinso snorted before he could stop it. They reached the east station entrance. Daichi pulled over. Rain had strengthened. He picked up the labeled umbrella and held it out. Shinso stared.
"No""It is raining""I can walk in rain""Yes""I might not return it""Then keep it until next time" Shinso's throat tightened unexpectedly. Next time. Careless words. Maybe not careless. He took the umbrella.
"Your labeling system is losing assets" Daichi looked solemn.
"A sacrifice in service of logistics" Shinso opened the door. Then stopped.
"Thanks""You're welcome" He stepped out, opened the umbrella, and walked toward the station. At the entrance, he looked back once. Daichi's car was still there. Waiting until he got inside. Shinso hated that he noticed. He hated less that he kept walking. When he reached the placement, the hallway smelled like damp shoes and reheated convenience food. No one asked how the meeting went. No one asked why he had an umbrella.
No one asked why his bag held a blue envelope that made his hand hover over it twice before he took it out. His room was small. Bed. Desk. Chair. Window. Not much else. He placed the blue envelope on the desk. Then placed the charger beside it. Then the umbrella by the door, still wet, label facing outward. FRONT PASSENGER. He stared at all three objects. Evidence, power, shelter. No. That was too dramatic. A record, a charger, an umbrella. Practical things. He sat at the desk and opened the envelope.
The words were still there. Emergency Rescue Support. He read the student statements again. Kenta. Sano. Arai. Akiyama. Decisive. He hated that word. He touched it with one finger anyway. Then he took out a notebook, one he barely used because writing things down felt like giving them somewhere to live. He opened to a blank page. For a long time, he did not write. Then he wrote: They wrote rescue support. He stopped. The room was quiet. Rain tapped the window. No one came. No one asked.
No one waited outside the door. His phone buzzed. Akiyama. Arrived? Shinso looked at the message. Then at the umbrella. Then at the blue envelope. Then at the charger. He typed: Arrived. A second later: Good. Shinso stared at the word. He wrote one more line in the notebook before he could change his mind. It is not nothing. Then he closed it. The words were still clean. He still distrusted clean words. But for the first time, one of them had been written in a way that might protect him instead of only measure him.
That did not fix anything. It did not erase years of people hearing his Quirk and taking one step back. It did not make the record pure. It did not make the cafeteria easy. It did not make him safe. But it was not nothing. And in the space between nothing and enough, something had begun to stand.
