Ren woke to the news that Todoroki had advanced again. That was not the first thing anyone said. The first thing anyone said was Recovery Girl ordering him not to sit up. The second thing was Hana asking his pain level. The third was Daichi informing him that he had slept for forty-three minutes, which was apparently long enough to count as medically meaningful and short enough to irritate everyone who wanted him unconscious for his own good.
Only after water, temperature, rib check, scar check, hand tremor assessment, and one accusation of "trying to look toward the tournament feed with your eyebrows" did Kurose tell him.
"Todoroki advanced over Iida" Ren stared at the ceiling.
"Oh" Recovery Girl adjusted something near his IV.
"That is all the emotional reaction you are allowed until your pulse proves maturity" Ren breathed shallowly.
"How?" Kurose checked her tablet.
"Controlled ice. Limited fire use, mostly for temperature balance and field pressure. He did not produce the same large-scale release he used against Midoriya. Iida forced him to move more than expected. Todoroki won by ring-out" Ren processed. Todoroki had used fire again. Not as explosion. Not as full acceptance. As adjustment. Small fire. That mattered. Maybe. Maybe not enough.
"Midoriya?"
"Being treated. Broken fingers, no major additional injury. He is stable and furious with himself in a very Midoriya-specific way" Shinso, from the chair near the wall, said "So muttering" Kurose looked at him.
"Likely" Shinso drank water as if annoyed by being correct. Hana sat beside the bed reading the latest public statement draft for the fifth time. Daichi stood by the window with both hands in his pockets, looking out at nothing. The room had shifted since Ren last woke. Less emergency. More aftermath. Aftermath was not gentler. It simply had more paperwork. The note from All Might still rested in a plastic sleeve on the side table. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model.
Ren had read it three times before Recovery Girl confiscated it for "emotional dosage control" and then returned it after Hana argued that confiscating a note from All Might might technically create more emotional disturbance than supervised access. Recovery Girl had called that argument manipulative. Hana had said thank you. Ren had chosen not to laugh. Now Kurose stood near the foot of his bed with a different expression. Ren recognized it. Incoming complication.
"What?" Kurose did not pretend.
"Todoroki requested permission to speak with you" The room stilled. Hana lowered the statement draft. Daichi turned from the window. Shinso's bottle stopped halfway to his mouth. Recovery Girl said "No" Kurose looked at her. Recovery Girl continued.
"That was my first answer. I can provide more syllables if necessary" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"Why?" Kurose answered.
"He did not give a full reason. He said he owed you words before the final" Shinso snorted softly.
"Words. Famous safe category" Hana looked at Ren.
"You do not owe him anything""I know" Daichi came closer.
"You can refuse""I know" Hana's gaze sharpened.
"Do you?" Ren breathed. Ribs four with medication. Fever lower. Scar heat mild, diffuse, not spiking. Emotional state yellow. Proof-seeking low in current context. Anger undefined. Curiosity high.
"I want to hear what he thinks he owes" Recovery Girl frowned.
"That answer is not stupid enough to reject immediately" Shinso said "High praise" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Conditions. Five minutes. No standing. No tactical interrogation. No replay discussion in detail. If your pulse spikes, we end it. If Todoroki seeks absolution, he does not receive it from a patient in a bed" Hana said "Good" Daichi said "Very good" Recovery Girl said "Eight minutes if he says medically useful things. Three if he says emotionally stupid things" Shinso leaned back.
"So five is fiction" Kurose ignored him. This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source. Ren nodded.
"Yes" Hana's hand rested near his right hand. Not holding. Available.
"That does not mean forgiveness" Ren looked at her.
"I know" She looked toward the door before Todoroki had even appeared.
"Good" Kurose left to arrange it. The room prepared without moving much. Recovery Girl checked the monitors with open hostility. Daichi moved the chair slightly to give Hana an unobstructed line to Ren. Shinso stayed seated but less relaxed, one foot flat on the floor now, ready for nothing useful and everything emotional. Hana placed the statement draft aside. Ren did not look at his left arm. The dressing still showed faint scar-lines beneath transparent film. He wanted to cover them. He did not. The door opened.
Todoroki Shoto entered like someone who had been taught how to walk into rooms without asking them for permission and was only now learning that some rooms might refuse him anyway. He wore his U. A. uniform jacket over the sports festival shirt. The right side of his hair was damp from melted frost. The left side looked drier, faintly disordered in a way Ren had not seen before. No visible injury. No obvious exhaustion. But the stillness was different. Before, Todoroki had looked controlled.
Now he looked contained. Kurose stood behind him but did not enter fully. Recovery Girl pointed at a marked spot on the floor.
"There" Todoroki stopped exactly there. Good instincts. Or good fear. He looked first at Recovery Girl. Then at Hana and Daichi. Then at Ren. His eyes stopped briefly on the exposed arm. The scar-lines. The dressing. The evidence. Hana saw him look. Her voice was calm enough to cut.
"He is injured. You get words, not absolution" Todoroki's face did not change much. His throat did. He bowed. Not to the room generally. To Hana and Daichi.
"I understand" Daichi's jaw tightened.
"I hope so" Todoroki straightened. Then looked at Ren.
"Akiyama""Todoroki" Silence. Not empty. Measured. Todoroki's eyes moved again to the monitors, then back.
"I am sorry for the hazard my ice created" Ren listened. The wording mattered. Not sorry I hurt you. Not sorry you got involved. The hazard my ice created. Specific. Better. Not complete. Ren said "Accepted as factual apology" Shinso made a small sound. Almost approval. Todoroki blinked.
"Not as forgiveness?" Ren looked at him.
"Forgiveness is larger than five minutes" Hana's hand shifted near the sheet. Daichi exhaled through his nose. Recovery Girl muttered "Good" Todoroki absorbed that. Then nodded.
"Correct" Another silence. Ren could see him reorganizing. Todoroki was not socially clumsy in the same way as Iida or Izuku. He was worse in a quieter way. He knew how to stand, how to speak, how to be impressive. He did not know what to do when impressive was not relevant.
"You could have attacked me" Todoroki said Ren answered "No""You had an opening""No""You moved after the ice should have held you""Yes""You crossed distance""Yes""You reached the slab""Yes""You could have reached me""No" Todoroki's eyes narrowed.
"Why?" Ren thought of Shinso in the tunnel. Wrong priority. He thought of the technician's cable. The slab. The crack. The way the body had answered.
"Different direction" Todoroki stared.
"That is not what I meant""It is the answer" Shinso leaned back and looked at the ceiling, but his mouth twitched once. Todoroki's hand flexed at his side.
"You spent your chance on the ice""Yes""Not the match""Yes""You lost""Yes" The sequence had no mercy in it. Good. Todoroki looked down for half a second.
"I won""Yes""It does not feel like it" Ren's eyes stayed on him.
"That is not my responsibility to fix" The room went very still. Todoroki looked up. For the first time, something like surprise crossed his face clearly. Ren continued.
"If you came here for me to make your win feel clean, I cannot" Todoroki's jaw tightened.
"I did not""Good""I do not know why I came" That was probably the first fully honest thing he had said. Ren believed it. Unfortunately. Recovery Girl glanced at the monitor. No spike beyond acceptable. Kurose remained at the doorway. Hana watched Todoroki with a complicated expression Ren did not try to decode.
Todoroki said "Midoriya said your name""Yes""He said you used one chance to protect people from my ice""Yes""He said I keep pretending half my power does not exist""Yes" The left side of Todoroki's jacket seemed suddenly louder by being still. Ren said nothing. Todoroki looked at the floor.
"I used fire""I heard""Against Midoriya""Yes""Against Iida""Yes""Small amounts" Ren looked at him.
"Small can be repeatable" Todoroki's eyes lifted. That sentence had belonged to Izuku. All Might. Ren. Everyone and no one. Todoroki said "It did not feel small""No""It felt like giving him something" Ren did not ask who. There were names too large for five minutes. Endeavor. Father. Monster. Goal. Tool. All the words behind Todoroki's left side. Ren said "Using fire is not the same as obeying him" Todoroki's face went cold so fast the room seemed to notice.
"You do not know him""No""You do not know what he made me for""No""You do not know what that fire means""No" The repeated answer cut through the rising cold more effectively than argument would have. Ren breathed. Ribs held. Scar mild.
"You are right" Ren said "I do not know your father" Todoroki's eyes sharpened. Ren continued.
"I know your ice nearly hurt people because you had made one half of yourself the only available answer" Todoroki went still. The room held its breath with him. Ren did not stop.
"Refusing half your Quirk did not make the match safer. It made one answer too large" Hana closed her eyes briefly. Daichi looked at the floor. Shinso's face had gone expressionless in the way that meant he had heard something worth keeping. Todoroki stared at Ren. The silence lasted long enough for the monitor to sound too loud. Finally, Todoroki said "Midoriya said it was mine""Yes""You are saying it has consequences""Yes""Those are different""Yes" His mouth tightened.
"Which is more important?" Ren considered. Question good. Better than expected.
"Both. Ownership without consequences becomes indulgence. Consequences without ownership becomes imprisonment" Todoroki looked as if Ren had struck him without moving. Recovery Girl muttered "Who let the patient become philosophical?" Shinso said "He does it through fever" Ren ignored both. Todoroki's gaze moved to Ren's arm again.
"The thing you did. The scar" Ren waited.
"Was it yours?" The room changed. Hana looked at Ren. Kurose straightened at the doorway. Recovery Girl's eyes went to the monitor. Ren felt the question enter deeper than Todoroki probably intended. Was it yours? The body had done it. The Quirk had answered. He had not asked for the trigger. He had directed the movement. Trigger involuntary. Direction partially voluntary. Priority voluntary.
"Yes and no" Todoroki did not look away. Ren continued.
"It was my body. My Quirk. Not fully my command""Then how did you choose?"
"I did not choose the power. I chose the priority" Todoroki's throat moved. The sentence landed. Ren saw it. Not resolved. Landed. Todoroki said "Wrong priority" Ren looked at him sharply. Shinso lifted one eyebrow. Todoroki noticed neither.
"You said that after the match""Yes""What did it mean?" Ren looked toward the window. Not out of avoidance. For space.
"I wanted the match to mean something about me. I wanted you to be the proof. Then the ice fell. That became the wrong priority" Todoroki listened with an intensity that felt almost rude. Ren turned back.
"You were no longer the point" Todoroki's expression shifted. Small. Painful. He had probably never been told he was not the point in a way that did not reduce him to his father's tool. The door opened wider. A staff member leaned toward Kurose and whispered something. Kurose's eyes flicked to Todoroki.
"Final call in ten minutes" Todoroki nodded without turning. Bakugo waited somewhere beyond the room. Final match. Explosion against a boy who had just found small fire and did not know whether using it meant surrender. Todoroki looked at Ren again.
"If I use fire in the final" Ren said "Then use it because you choose the match. Not because Midoriya forced you. Not because I was injured. Not because your father wants it. Not because refusing would prove something" Todoroki's eyes narrowed.
"And if I do not?"
"Then know what your refusal costs" Another silence. Todoroki seemed angry. Good. Anger meant contact. Not with Ren maybe. With the problem. Hana spoke before anyone else could.
"You are also a child" Todoroki looked at her. The words had clearly not been where he expected them. Hana's voice remained steady.
"That does not erase what happened. It means no one in this room should ask you to solve your whole life before your next match" Todoroki's expression faltered. Daichi added quietly.
"But you still have to choose what you do next" Todoroki looked between them. For a moment, he seemed younger than the stadium allowed him to be. Then he bowed. First to Hana and Daichi. Then to Recovery Girl. Then to Ren.
"I am sorry for the hazard my ice created. I will not ask you to make it clean" Ren nodded once.
"Good" Shinso sighed.
"There it is again" Todoroki looked at him for the first time since entering. Shinso met his eyes.
"If you make him spike a fever by being dramatic, I'm telling his mother" Todoroki blinked. Hana said "He means it" Ren whispered "Effective threat" Todoroki looked uncertain whether this was normal. It was not. He said "Understood" Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Time. Out" Todoroki turned. At the doorway, he stopped.
"Akiyama" Ren looked at him. Todoroki's left hand flexed once.
"Your Quirk" Ren waited.
"It is not only pain" The words were clumsy. Important. Ren's throat tightened.
"No" Todoroki nodded slowly. Then left. The room exhaled after him. Not fully. Enough. Recovery Girl moved to Ren's bedside.
"Status""Yellow. Pain stable. Emotional spike manageable. Scar mild""Philosophical overexertion?"
"Moderate""Annoying but survivable" Hana sat down again. Her face was pale but thoughtful. Daichi rubbed his forehead.
"That boy is carrying a building" Kurose stepped back into the room.
"Yes" Shinso looked at the door.
"So are we counting that as apology or tactical weather event?" Ren closed his eyes.
"Both""Always both""Yes" Hana took Ren's right hand carefully.
"You did not forgive him for comfort""No""You did not punish him for needing words""No""Good" Ren opened one eye.
"You too?" She almost smiled.
"Yes. Me too" A distant roar rose from the stadium. The final was being prepared. Bakugo. Todoroki. Fire or refusal. Choice or consequence. The room did not turn on the audio. No one asked. Not yet. Ren lay still and felt his body slowly return from the edge of the conversation. His scar-lines did not flare. His ribs remained painful. His fever did not spike. Small progress. Boring progress. Useful progress. Todoroki had come looking for something he could not name and left without being given absolution.
Ren had spoken truths he had no right to make painless. Hana had remembered that even powerful boys were still children. Daichi had made choice sound heavier than blame. Shinso had threatened emotional disaster with maternal escalation. The world outside the infirmary continued to perform. Inside, no one clapped. That helped. For a while, that helped more than applause ever had.
