For five seconds after Nezu said the words, Ren Akiyama could not move. Your job is to keep them alive. It should have been simple. A clear instruction from an adult with authority. A defined objective. A contained room. Fourteen students. Multiple minor injuries. Hostiles outside. Communication line active. Shelter secured. Compared to the Ruins Zone, it was almost merciful. Ren hated that. Mercy felt suspicious when a disaster was still unfolding around it.
The staff shelter was too bright, too clean, and too small for the number of frightened bodies inside. White walls reflected emergency lights in hard angles. Benches lined two sides of the room. Metal cabinets held water, blankets, first aid supplies, and sealed packets labeled with precise instructions in three languages. A wall monitor displayed a U. A. emergency interface, half the icons red, several gray, one blinking amber beside the words COMMUNICATION INSTABILITY.
The heavy door shook every few breaths when something outside struck it or when the facility trembled from impacts elsewhere. Ren stood beside the red phone with blood drying on his cheek, left forearm bandaged only by pressure from his sleeve, ribs aching with every breath, and Nezu's voice waiting on the line. Can you continue providing status updates? Yes. He had said yes. Now the room expected him to know what yes meant. Kenta was staring at him. Nana was crying into an emergency blanket.
Fujimura sat on the floor with his head tilted back, two fingers pinching his nose, eyes unfocused from Quirk strain. Reina held his shoulder with both hands as if that might keep him assembled. Tamura had taken off his sticky shoes and was whispering apologies to them, which Ren decided not to classify yet. Arai stood near the wall with her horns vibrating faintly, face pale and one sleeve stained with blood.
Sano sat on a bench with his injured knee extended, jaw clenched hard enough to make his enlarged hands flex and unflex against his thighs. Shinso stood near the door. Of course. One hand braced lightly against the wall beside it, head tilted as if he could hear intention through reinforced steel. His face was almost bored. His eyes were not. Ren pressed the phone closer to his ear.
"Principal Nezu""I am here" The calmness of the voice was a tool. Ren recognized that immediately. Nezu was giving him something steady to hold. That made Ren trust him less and rely on him more. Contradictory. Useful.
"Shelter door is holding" Ren said "Hostile outside attempted entry but has not breached. Students are conscious. No obvious major bleeding. We need instructions for internal first aid and whether to barricade" Nezu answered without delay.
"Do not obstruct the shelter door unless instructed. It may prevent rescue access. Use internal locking only. Begin triage. Put injured students seated or lying down. Control bleeding. No one sleeps if head injury is possible. Water in small amounts only. Can you assign tasks?"
"Yes""Then assign them" Ren lowered the phone but did not hang up.
"Everyone listen" The room did not become silent. Not immediately. Fear had momentum. Ren raised his voice just enough.
"Listen" That worked better. Not because he was loud. Because he sounded certain. That was almost dishonest. He pointed to Kenta.
"Kenta. Door watch. Do not open it. Do not stand directly in front of it. Tell me if impact pattern changes" Kenta nodded.
"Arai. Sound and vibration watch. You have the best early warning. Sit if dizzy" Arai lifted her chin.
"I'm fine" Ren looked at her bloodstained sleeve.
"No one here is fine. Sit if dizzy" She grimaced.
"Understood""Sano. Injured knee. Sit. You are still rear defense if door breach occurs, but do not stand until needed" Sano looked ready to argue. Shinso said "Sit before he adds a paragraph" Sano sat.
"Fujimura. No more flashes unless ordered. Nose pressure. Reina, monitor him. If he gets confused, vomits, or loses consciousness, say it loudly" Reina nodded quickly.
"Tamura. Blankets. Water. Count supplies. Nana, help him if you can" Nana wiped her face.
"I can" Good. Not good. Moving. Movement helped fear become task. Ren turned to Shinso.
"Shinso" Shinso looked over.
"Don't say rest""I wasn't""Good""Stand away from the door" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"That sounds like rest with extra syllables""Your Quirk needs verbal response. You do not need to be first object through the breach" Shinso stared at him. Then stepped one meter back from the door.
"Better?"
"Yes""You're bleeding""Yes""Patch yourself""In a moment" Shinso's eyes narrowed. Ren looked away first because he needed the phone again.
"Tasks assigned" he said Nezu's voice returned.
"Good. Are any students at risk of immediate panic-driven behavior?" Ren looked around. All of them, technically. But not equally.
"Nana and Reina acute distress but responsive to tasks. Fujimura Quirk strain and possible exhaustion. Tamura shaking but mobile. Sano and Kenta stable if given physical tasks. Shinso functional" Shinso's eyes flicked toward him at the word. Functional. A terrible compliment. Nezu's tone shifted by almost nothing.
"And you?" Ren hesitated half a second too long. Nezu said "Akiyama""Functional" This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. Across the room, Shinso muttered "Hypocrite" Nezu heard. Of course he did.
"I will request a second status on you from another student shortly" Ren looked at the phone. That was inconvenient. Nezu continued "For now, look at the wall monitor. I am unlocking limited internal status display for Shelter B. You will not have full camera access, but I can route facility alerts and zone summaries. Tell me what you see" The monitor flickered. A U. A. emergency map appeared. USJ rendered as a simplified dome divided into zones. Central Plaza: red. Flood Zone: red. Fire Zone: amber.
Landslide Zone: amber. Ruins Zone: red. Storm Zone: amber. Mountain Zone: gray. Communications: degraded. External gate: locked. Staff response: active. Hero Course student locations: partial. General Studies student locations: partial. Ren stared at the map. Partial was doing a lot of work. Nezu said "Read it aloud" Ren did. As he spoke, the room quieted for a different reason. Information made fear heavier, but it gave it shape. Arai pressed one hand to her horn.
"Central is still loud""Define loud" Ren said"Impacts. Many. Some close to the ground. One person moving fast through groups. Metal? No, fabric snapping. I think capture weapon" Aizawa. Still fighting. Good. Bad. Aizawa fighting meant Aizawa alone. Ren reported it. Nezu listened.
"Noted" The map updated. Central Plaza remained red. Flood Zone red pulsed once. Ren's stomach tightened. Izuku. Tsuyu. Mineta. He should not know. He knew. Shinso noticed his face.
"Someone you know?" Ren did not answer. The shelter door shook again. Kenta flinched but did not move in front of it. Good. A voice shouted from outside, muffled by steel.
"Open up, kids! We're staff!" No one spoke. Kenta looked at Ren. Ren held the phone.
"Principal Nezu. Someone outside claims staff""Do not open. Request faculty code" Ren raised his voice toward the door.
"Faculty code" Silence. Then the voice outside laughed.
"Smart brats" Kenta's grip tightened on the wall edge. Shinso's eyes sharpened. Ren spoke into the phone.
"Hostile confirmed outside Shelter B. At least one. Attempted deception""Remain sealed""Yes" The door shook once more. Then the impacts stopped. Arai closed her eyes.
"Movement leaving. Two sets. No, three""Direction?"
"Left from outside. Away from the corridor we used" Ren reported it. The map did not change. Nezu remained calm. Too calm. Ren wondered what the principal was seeing elsewhere. Then the monitor flickered and a small live window appeared in the top corner. Not full video. A distorted feed from the central plaza. Ren saw Aizawa. The camera angle was high and partially obstructed by dust. The image stuttered every few seconds, but it showed enough. Too much.
Aizawa stood at the base of the central stairs, hair raised, goggles hidden beneath shadow, capture weapon moving through a crowd of villains. His breathing was not visible from the feed, but Ren could see the pattern: efficiency still high, recovery gaps shrinking, shoulder movement less smooth on the left, blood near the temple, stance slightly lower than at the beginning. Fatigue. Numbers grinding down technique. A villain lunged at him with claws extended. Aizawa erased, redirected, dropped him.
Another came from the side. Aizawa pivoted and kicked. A third used the opening to swing a heavy chain. The capture weapon caught it, but the delay cost him half a step. Half a step was debt. Ren's hand tightened around the phone. Nezu said "Akiyama""He is slowing""I know""Too many""I know" The calmness became almost cruel. Not because Nezu did not care. Because caring would not put more bodies in the plaza. Ren watched Thirteen in the corner of the feed, arm raised toward the black-fog villain.
The darkness twisted around the rescue hero's attack, folding space with terrible elegance. Iida was near the stairs, trying to move, blocked, redirected, shouting. The feed cut out. The monitor returned to the map. Ren almost struck it. He did not. Pain in his forearm helped. The shelter shook again, not from the door. From below. A roar rolled through the facility. Not human. Not machine. Something deeper. Ren froze. The monster. The wrong body.
The thing his memory had never shown clearly enough, only in broken impressions of exposed flesh, impossible strength, and All Might's shadow against something made to survive him. The name did not come. Maybe he had never known it. Maybe some part of him refused to turn that thing into something as small as a name. Fujimura lowered his hand from his nose.
"What was that?" No one answered. Arai's face had gone white.
"That one is different" Sano whispered "What do you mean?" She pressed both hands against the sides of her head, careful around her horns.
"It feels heavy" Kenta said "Sound can't feel heavy" Arai shook her head.
"This does" The map flashed. Central Plaza: critical. Nezu's voice came through the phone, still controlled but tighter now.
"Akiyama. Status in shelter""All students still sheltered. No breach. Multiple students distressed by unidentified impact or vocalization""Keep them away from the door""Yes" Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso had not moved toward the door. He was staring at the monitor instead.
"You know what that is" Shinso said quietly Ren met his eyes.
"Yes" The room heard him. He should not have said it. But some truths were too large to hide once fear had made everyone listen. Nana whispered "What is it?" Ren looked at her. A child in a uniform. A civilian. A simulated civilian who had become real because the world did not care about role cards. He could not say a monster built to kill All Might. Not here. Not to them. Not through a phone line Nezu could hear without consequence.
"A heavy combatant" Ren said "Not our problem unless it reaches us" Shinso's eyes said liar. Ren's eyes answered not now. The phone was silent for two seconds. Then Nezu asked "What makes you say heavy combatant?" Ren felt the trap close gently. Not malicious. Precise.
"Arai's vibration report. Facility impact pattern. Villain strategy. They came prepared for more than students" The room stared. Nezu did not answer immediately. That silence was different from the others. It was too short to be confusion. Too long to be nothing. The line went quiet just long enough to become information. Then Nezu said "Akiyama. That is a specific assessment" Ren swallowed.
"It is an assessment, not confirmed intelligence""I did not ask whether it was confirmed. I asked why you made it" Ren looked at the monitor. Central Plaza: critical. Flood Zone: red. Communications: degraded. All Might absent. Aizawa slowing. Black fog dividing space. A hand-covered figure in the fragments he had never fully admitted to himself, standing near something too large and too obedient. He chose the part he could defend.
"The attack is structured. The black-fog villain controls mobility and division. The one covered in hands appears to occupy command or symbolic leadership. The heavy combatant's movement and impact profile do not match a student-targeting role. If the villains came for All Might, they brought something meant for All Might" No one in the shelter spoke. Even Shinso looked at him differently. Nezu's voice, when it came, was softer. Not warmer. Sharper.
"You saw the hand-covered individual?" Ren's blood went cold. Careful.
"In the partial feed. Briefly" True. Not full truth.
"Enough to assess leadership?"
"Enough to assess that other villains were not treating him as disposable" Another pause.
"Continue" Ren's throat tightened. He continued because stopping would not make the pattern kinder.
"The black-fog villain is the mobility piece. If allowed to move freely, he can keep students isolated and prevent coordinated evacuation. The hand-covered individual is either giving orders or representing the group's purpose. The heavy combatant is likely being held for All Might or any teacher strong enough to replace him as target. If All Might arrives alone, they will try to isolate him from support" Shinso whispered "How the hell" Ren ignored him.
Nezu said "Your basis remains partly unaccounted for""Yes""Is that deliberate?"
"Yes" The shelter went still. Shinso stared. Kenta slowly looked from Ren to the phone. Nezu did not sound offended. That was worse.
"Understood" Nezu said "For now, do not speculate aloud beyond necessary shelter instruction. I will route your assessment to active command. We will discuss what remains unaccounted for later" Later. The word landed like a sealed door. Ren closed his eyes for half a second.
"Yes, Principal" The shelter phone clicked. Another voice entered briefly, deeper, strained.
"Principal. External line restored. Iida reached faculty" Iida. Ren breathed out. Good. The voice disappeared. Nezu returned.
"Reinforcements are mobilizing" The room exhaled. Not fully. Enough. Nana whispered "Help is coming?" Ren looked at her.
"Yes" This time it was supported. Better. Shinso leaned against the wall, eyes closed.
"Engine guy made it out""Iida" Ren said"Sure""His name is Iida" Shinso opened one eye.
"You always correct names during attacks?"
"When useful""It wasn't""It was" Shinso looked at him for a second. Then said "Fine. Iida made it out" Names mattered. If people became roles too easily, they became movable pieces. Hero Course. General Studies. Civilian. Villain. Extra. Deku. Brainwashing guy. Quirkless. Heavy combatant. Symbol. Names resisted flattening. A new alert appeared on the monitor. Shelter B external corridor: hostile movement detected. Kenta immediately straightened. Sano started to stand. Ren held up one hand.
"Not yet" Arai pressed both hands to the floor.
"Many footsteps. Running past? No. Stopping" The door speaker crackled. A voice came through.
"Students inside Shelter B. This is U. A. staff extraction unit. Respond" Ren lifted the phone.
"Principal Nezu. Door speaker claims staff extraction unit" Nezu answered "Do not open yet. Ask for faculty code Delta-Seven-Kuro" Ren repeated through the door speaker.
"Provide faculty code Delta-Seven-Kuro" A pause. Then the voice outside responded "Delta-Seven-Kuro. Secondary code Recovery-Five" Nezu said "Confirmed. Unlock on my count. Students move out in groups of four. Injured first. Follow staff without deviation" Ren stood. Kenta's hand twitched as if to push him back down. Ren looked at him.
"Extraction""That means you still don't run""Correct" The door opened. This time, real staff stood outside. Three U. A. security officers in reinforced gear. One medical responder. Kurose behind them, face pale with controlled fury. Ren had never been so relieved to see an angry teacher. She looked into the shelter. Her eyes found him first. Then Shinso. Then the blood on the floor. Then the students behind them. For one second, her face shifted. Not much. Enough. Then she became function.
"Everyone out. Injured first. Stay low. No talking unless giving medical information. Arai, with me. Sano, lean on that officer. Fujimura, medic. Akiyama" Ren stepped forward. Kurose pointed at the bench.
"Last group, because you will attempt to count everyone otherwise" He stopped. Shinso gave him a look. Ren said nothing. Kurose's eyes narrowed.
"That was not a request""Yes, sensei" Students moved. Nana and Reina first with the medic. Fujimura next. Arai under Kurose's direct hand. Sano reluctantly accepting support. Tamura clutching his shoes. Kenta paused at the door. Ren said "Go" Kenta pointed at him.
"You come out""Yes""You say yes too easily""I have been told" Kenta left. Shinso remained. Kurose looked at him.
"Shinso""He goes, I go" Ren said "Unnecessary" Shinso did not look at him. Kurose's gaze moved between them. For a second, Ren expected her to argue. Instead she said "Fine. Both of you last. Officer behind them" The extraction route led through the corridor they had been trying to reach earlier, now cleared by staff.
Signs of conflict marked the path: scuffed walls, a dropped knife sealed in evidence foam, scorch marks along a pipe, a villain unconscious under restraint cuffs, a smear of blood that did not belong to any student Ren had seen. Every detail entered his mind. He did not want all of them. He got them anyway. They moved toward an internal triage point, not the main exit. The facility still shook with distant impacts. Reinforcements had not ended the fight. They had only begun to change the equation.
At one junction, the corridor opened briefly onto an upper maintenance balcony overlooking the central plaza. Kurose was ahead with the first students. The officer behind Ren and Shinso gestured.
"Keep moving" Ren turned his head anyway. Only one second. One second was enough. The central plaza was a battlefield. Aizawa lay broken near the stairs, barely moving, blood bright against concrete. Thirteen was down. Several students were scattered at the edges, some injured, some trying to move, some frozen. The hand-covered leader stood near Aizawa with twitching fingers, anger in every line of his body. The black-fog villain hovered nearby like a wound in space. The heavy combatant stood in the middle. Still.
Waiting. Ren did not have a name for it. Names were for people. This was purpose wearing flesh. Then the main doors blew open. Light cut into the plaza. A figure stood against it, massive shoulders filling the entrance, costume torn at the edges by speed and urgency, smile present but strained by something deeper than performance. All Might had arrived. The facility seemed to inhale. Ren felt everyone around him pause, even the officer who had told them to keep moving. The Symbol stepped into USJ. Late. But there.
For one terrible, impossible second, relief hit Ren so hard it almost became pain. Then he looked at the heavy combatant. At Aizawa. At the hand-covered leader's sudden, delighted fury. At All Might's smile. And he understood that arrival was not the same as victory. The officer pushed gently but firmly at his shoulder.
"Move" This time, Ren obeyed. As the balcony wall cut off his view, All Might's voice rolled through the plaza, bright enough to shake fear and wounded enough that Ren could hear the crack beneath it.
"I am here" Ren walked away from the light with blood on his sleeve, Shinso silent beside him, and the sound of a symbol arriving late echoing behind them.
