Chương 29: Public Reassurance

The announcement came at 9: 12 in the morning, which Ren Akiyama immediately disliked. Not because of the time itself. Because of the timing. First period had started. Students were in classrooms. Teachers were present. Corridors were controlled. Parents were far enough away that immediate family panic would have to travel through phones instead of hallways. Media restrictions were still active. The first wave of post-USJ welfare meetings had been completed. Injury reports had been collected.
Rumors had been partially contained. The school had resumed enough ordinary function to make an extraordinary announcement look like part of the schedule. U. A. had waited until the building could absorb the reaction. That was not wrong. It was still manipulation. Ren sat in Class 1-C with his notebook closed on the desk, a soft pencil beside it, and the folded restriction paper from Daichi in the inside pocket of his blazer like an embarrassing legal charm. His ribs were better than yesterday.
Better did not mean good. His left forearm itched under the bandage. The old burn scar beneath the gauze remained quiet enough to be ignored if he was willing to classify quiet as harmless, which Recovery Girl had explicitly told him not to do. Kurose stood at the front of the room, tablet in hand, expression unchanged from the moment the schoolwide chime had sounded. Not the emergency tone. Routine announcement tone. Several students had still flinched.
Kurose had said "Routine tone" before the speaker clicked fully on. Prepared. Again. The classroom speaker crackled. Then Principal Nezu's voice filled the room.
"Good morning, students" The room went still. Nezu sounded exactly as he usually did. Cheerful. Precise. Almost gentle. That made the announcement worse.
"I appreciate your patience during the modified schedule following the recent attack on the Unforeseen Simulation Joint. I know that many of you have questions. Some of those questions can be answered now. Others cannot yet be answered safely or responsibly. I ask that you continue following faculty instructions regarding privacy, media contact, and post-incident support" Ren's pencil remained untouched. He did not need notes. The words were entering anyway.
Nezu continued "After extensive consultation with faculty, security personnel, medical staff, law enforcement, the Hero Public Safety Commission, parent representatives, and relevant external partners, U. A. has decided that the upcoming Sports Festival will proceed" No one spoke. That was the first reaction. Not excitement. Not outrage. Silence. Even the students who had been hoping for it looked momentarily wrong-footed by the shape of wanting becoming real.
Ren felt the announcement settle into the room like pressure. The Sports Festival would proceed. Not might. Not under review. Proceed. Nezu's voice continued, smooth and careful.
"The schedule will include additional security measures, revised emergency protocols, enhanced medical presence, and updated student welfare procedures. Participation expectations and exemptions will be communicated through homeroom faculty. No student will be asked to ignore medical restrictions. No student will be permitted to use recent events as justification for unsafe preparation" Kurose's eyes moved once across the room. Several students looked away. Ren did not. He had already been seen.
"U. A. recognizes the gravity of continuing a public event after a direct attack on school grounds" Nezu said "We also recognize that fear is one of the weapons used by those who attacked us. Our answer will not be denial. It will not be recklessness. It will be preparation, transparency where possible, protection where necessary, and the continued education of students who came here to build futures larger than fear" That was good language. Ren hated that it was good. It would work. It probably should work.
That did not make it clean. Nezu paused. When he spoke again, the cheer had thinned into something quieter.
"To all students who were present at USJ: your survival is not being used as decoration for institutional pride. If you feel that it is, tell your homeroom teacher, medical staff, or support services. If you cannot participate safely, you will be protected. If you choose to participate, you will be supported. If you are unsure, you will be helped to determine what is safe, not pressured to decide alone" Ren looked at Kurose. Her face did not change. But her grip on the tablet had relaxed by one fraction.
That sentence had her fingerprints on it. Maybe Recovery Girl's. Maybe both. Nezu finished.
"More information will follow. For now, continue with your modified schedule. Faculty will discuss department-specific details with you. Thank you" The speaker clicked off. The silence remained. Then Yabara raised his hand. Kurose looked at him.
"Yes""Are we allowed to react?" A laugh moved through the room. Small. Uneven. Necessary. Kurose set the tablet down.
"Yes" Everyone reacted at once. Not loudly at first. It started as air returning to bodies. Chairs shifted. Someone whispered "They're really doing it" near the back. Sano leaned back and stared at the ceiling. Kenta muttered something under his breath that sounded like "of course they are" and not like approval. Arai put both hands near the base of her wrapped horns, not touching, just grounding. Nana looked scared. Reina looked excited and guilty about being excited. Fujimura closed his eyes. Shinso did not move.
He sat two desks to Ren's left, chin propped on one hand, face bored enough to be dishonest. Ren looked at the board. Kurose had not written anything yet. That restraint was alarming. Sano spoke first in full volume.
"So we're just supposed to perform for cameras after villains attacked us?" Miyazaki answered before Kurose could.
"That's not fair. The Sports Festival is huge. People work for it all year" Kenta said "People got hurt last week""People get hurt in hero work all the time" Miyazaki snapped, then immediately looked like she hated herself for saying it. The room sharpened. Kurose's voice cut in.
"Stop" Everyone stopped. Not because she shouted. She did not need to. Kurose looked at Miyazaki.
"Repeat what you said" Miyazaki's face went pale.
"I didn't mean""Repeat it" She swallowed.
"People get hurt in hero work all the time" Kurose nodded.
"Now tell me what is wrong with using that sentence here" Miyazaki looked down.
"That we're students""Yes""That getting hurt being possible doesn't make it acceptable""Yes""That saying it like that makes it sound like USJ was normal""Yes" Miyazaki's voice got smaller.
"I'm sorry" Kurose did not soften, but her voice lowered.
"You are not wrong to want the Sports Festival. You are wrong if you need the attack to become acceptable in order to want it" Miyazaki nodded quickly. Kurose looked at the whole room.
"That distinction matters for all of you" Ren placed both hands flat on the desk. No pencil. No notes. He could feel the structure of the lecture forming before it arrived. Kurose turned and wrote on the board. Public reassurance. Then beneath it: Private cost. She stepped aside.
"The Sports Festival has always been more than a sports festival. Some of you knew that. Some of you preferred not to. After USJ, pretending becomes harder" Shinso's mouth twitched. Not humor. Recognition. Kurose continued "This event serves multiple purposes. Student evaluation. Hero agency scouting. Public entertainment. Media revenue. Civic ritual. Institutional branding. National reassurance. Quirk spectacle. Social ranking. Recruitment. Political messaging" She underlined national reassurance.
"After a villain attack on U. A., that last function becomes louder" Yabara muttered "So propaganda" Kurose looked at him.
"Sometimes" That answer quieted the room more than a denial would have. She continued "Propaganda is not defined simply by whether something is false. It is also about selection, framing, repetition, emotion, and purpose. The Sports Festival can showcase real student skill and also serve institutional messaging. It can inspire children and also pressure injured students. It can be meaningful and exploitative in the same hour" You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.
Kenta crossed his arms.
"That sucks""Yes""Isn't it your job to make that sound less bad?"
"No" Sano said "Best teacher" Kurose ignored him.
"The question is not whether the Sports Festival is pure. It is not. The question is how you participate without letting the event decide your meaning for you" Ren looked at the words again. Public reassurance. Private cost. A system could put those beside each other and call it education. Maybe that was education. Maybe education was learning which words adults placed side by side before asking children to walk between them. Kurose tapped the board.
"For Hero Course, the pressure will be obvious. The public will want to see strength. Parents will want to see safety. Agencies will want talent. Media will want narratives. U. A. will want proof that its students are not broken" Her eyes moved across 1-C.
"For General Studies, the pressure is different. You will be tempted to believe this is your chance to become visible because USJ proved you mattered" The room went still. Ren's ribs felt tight. Not from injury. Kurose continued "Some of you did matter at USJ. That is not in dispute. Some of you acted in ways the entrance exam did not measure. Some records now reflect that. Some faculty members are discussing that.
But if you enter the Sports Festival trying to turn trauma into certification, you will make yourself easy for the system to spend" The sentence hit too close. Recovery Girl's voice echoed in memory. Do not make yourself easy to spend. Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso's eyes were on the board. His expression was closed. Too closed. Kurose said "No one in this classroom will earn Hero Course consideration by proving they can be damaged attractively" Several students flinched. Ren did not.
Maybe because the sentence had struck too deep to allow movement. Kurose's gaze found him anyway. Then moved away. Not absolution. Mercy, perhaps. Hated. Needed. She continued "You may earn consideration by demonstrating judgment, adaptability, cooperation, control, strategic thinking, ethical Quirk use, physical ability within safe limits, and the capacity to act under pressure without confusing pressure for permission" Sano raised a hand slowly.
"Yes""So we can try?" Kurose looked at him.
"You can try" The room changed again. Hope entered badly. Like light through a cracked door. Kenta leaned forward.
"Even after USJ?"
"Especially after USJ, if you understand what I am saying" Miyazaki wiped one eye quickly. Yabara looked at the board like he wanted to argue with every word and had not chosen the order yet. Shinso remained still. Ren knew stillness. Sometimes it was control. Sometimes it was too many doors opening at once. Kurose looked at them.
"This is not an encouragement speech" Sano muttered "You don't do those""Correct. This is an instruction speech. If you participate, you will prepare under supervision. You will not challenge Hero Course students in hallways. You will not test Quirks unsafely. You will not form unauthorized training groups. You will not pressure classmates to reveal strategies. You will not use USJ as social currency.
You will not say someone deserves to participate because they suffered, or does not deserve to participate because they froze" Arai whispered "Good" The word barely reached the front. Kurose heard it anyway.
"Yes" Ren looked at Arai. Her hands had lowered from her horns. That mattered. Kurose moved to the next page on her tablet.
"Participation forms will be distributed today. Medical restrictions override ambition. Psychological restrictions count. Parent or guardian consultation is required for students under post-incident review. Transfer candidates will receive an additional briefing later this week" The last sentence split the room. Transfer candidates. There it was. Not Ren. Not Shinso. Not Sano. Not Kenta. A category large enough to hold all of them and sharp enough to cut. Shinso's eyes moved to Ren. Ren looked back.
For one second, the entire room faded. One seat. Maybe two. Maybe none. Sports Festival. Visible. Measured. Public. A way through the gate. A way to be spent. Shinso looked away first. Not surrender. Calculation. Ren respected it. That was unfortunate. The bell rang. No one flinched this time. Not much. Kurose said "Routine transition. Remain seated" The room remained seated. She looked satisfied.
"Progress" Yabara raised a hand.
"Is progress allowed to feel terrible?"
"Yes""Cool""Not the word I would choose" The morning continued after that, but the announcement had already rearranged everything. Mathematics happened. Technically. Language happened. Barely. History happened with unusual intensity because everyone now understood that events could become history while the bruises were still yellow. At lunch, the cafeteria was louder than it had been since USJ. Not pre-USJ loud. Different loud. Nervous energy had volume.
Sports Festival speculation moved from table to table despite every faculty attempt to contain it. Students discussed obstacle races, cavalry battles, tournament brackets, agency scouts, security, possible cancellations that had not happened, whether parents would be allowed to attend, whether All Might would appear, whether Aizawa would recover in time to watch, whether 1-A would dominate, whether 1-B would use the attack as motivation, whether General Studies had any chance at all.
Ren sat at the edge table with Shinso, Kenta, Sano, Arai, Nana, Reina, and Fujimura. The table had become theirs without anyone declaring it. That seemed dangerous. Also useful. Ren ate slowly because ribs disliked speed and Hana had written do not rush meals on a note inside his lunch container. Shinso saw it. He did not comment. That was suspiciously kind. Kenta slammed his tray down.
"I'm participating" Sano looked at him.
"You were before the announcement too""Now I'm participating angrily""That changes everything" Kenta pointed at the table with his chopsticks.
"I'm serious. I don't want USJ to be the only time anyone notices we can do anything" Nana looked down.
"I don't want everyone watching" Reina nodded.
"I want to try, but I also don't want cameras" Arai stirred her soup.
"Crowd noise will be bad" Fujimura said "Light too" Sano leaned back.
"So the event is designed by people who hate nervous systems" Ren said "It is designed for spectacle""Same thing""Not always" Shinso said "Often enough" Kenta looked at Shinso.
"What about you?" Shinso did not answer immediately. His chopsticks rested against the rice bowl.
"I'm participating" Sano grinned.
"Angrily?"
"Strategically" Kenta nodded with exaggerated solemnity.
"Worse" Shinso's gaze slid to Ren.
"And him?" Ren set down his chopsticks.
"I am medically restricted" Everyone stared. Kenta said "That was not the question""It is currently the primary constraint" Shinso leaned back.
"Are you participating?" Ren looked at the table. At the rice. At the bandage hidden beneath his sleeve. At the folded restriction paper in his pocket. At every year of training he had done for a door that had not opened. At Nezu asking how much he knew. At All Might's thin face. At Izuku's bandaged hand. At Kurose's board. Public reassurance. Private cost. He said "If medically cleared, yes" Kenta exhaled.
"Finally" Sano grinned. Arai looked concerned. Nana did too. Shinso's expression did not change, but something in his eyes sharpened. Good. Unfortunate. Good. Reina asked "For transfer?" Ren answered honestly.
"Yes" The table went quiet. Kenta's enthusiasm softened around the edges. Sano looked down at his knee brace. Fujimura stared at his tray. Shinso said "Same" No one seemed surprised. That almost made it worse. Ren looked at him.
"If there is one seat""I'm taking it" Shinso said The table stopped breathing. Ren nodded.
"Good" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"That wasn't an insult""I know" Kenta looked between them.
"You two are insane" Sano said "But clearly" Ren picked up his chopsticks again.
"Clarity reduces unnecessary resentment" Shinso snorted.
"No it doesn't""Sometimes""Not here""Perhaps not" Nana whispered "Can you be friends and compete?" Ren looked at her. Shinso did too. Neither answered immediately. Kenta said "Obviously" Sano said "Depends if they define friends like normal people" Arai said "They don't" Fujimura, who had been silent, said "Maybe that helps" Everyone looked at him. He shrugged, embarrassed.
"If normal doesn't fit, maybe they don't have to follow normal friendship rules" Shinso stared. Ren considered.
"That is structurally useful" Fujimura looked relieved. Kenta groaned.
"Please don't reward him with Akiyama approval" Sano said "Too late" The conversation moved on, but the sentence stayed. If there is one seat, I'm taking it. Good. It was not comfortable. It should not be. Comfort had never been the point of ambition. Maybe it should have been part of the point. Ren was still considering that when the cafeteria noise shifted. The Hero Course had entered. 1-A and 1-B together this time, or close enough in timing that the room read it as comparison.
Conversations tilted toward them instantly. The Sports Festival made every Hero Course student a future headline. After USJ, the effect doubled. People looked at them with admiration, concern, hunger, resentment, and expectations that had not asked permission before landing. Izuku entered beside Iida and Uraraka. His eyes found Ren's table. Ren nodded once. Izuku nodded back. Alive. No apologies. Small progress. Bakugo came in behind them, already irritated by being observed.
He looked like the entire cafeteria's attention was either fuel or insult. Possibly both. Todoroki walked near the back. Calm. Alone. Too controlled. Ren looked away before fragments sharpened. Too late. Ice across an arena. White breath. A half-body refusing inheritance. Crowd roaring. A path closing. A body too cold to move. Scar tissue burning under skin. Ren's fingers tightened around the chopsticks. They cracked. Not fully. Enough. Shinso's eyes moved to his hand.
"What?" Ren set the chopsticks down.
"Nothing immediate""That is not nothing""No" Kenta looked between them.
"What happened?" Ren said "Fragment" The table went still. He rarely said the word aloud with classmates. Maybe never at this table. Sano's voice lowered.
"Sports Festival?" Ren looked at Todoroki across the cafeteria. Then away.
"Possibly" Shinso followed the glance.
"Todoroki?" Ren did not answer. Answer enough. Shinso leaned closer, voice low.
"Immediate?"
"No""Dangerous?" Ren breathed carefully.
"All Quirks at the Sports Festival are dangerous""That's evasive""Yes" Kenta looked at Todoroki too.
"Half-and-half guy?" Sano said "He's strong as hell" Arai's fingers touched the wraps near her horns.
"He feels quiet" Ren looked at her. She shrugged slightly.
"Not sound. Just. Quiet" Shinso said "Helpful""It is to me" Ren watched Todoroki sit alone at the Hero Course table, surrounded by noise that did not seem to enter him. Quiet. Yes. Not peaceful. Frozen. Ren said "He will matter" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"To you?" Ren looked at him.
"I don't know" Shinso did not like that. Ren liked it less. After lunch, Ren reported the fragment. Not because it was immediate. Because the protocol existed and Kurose had the uncanny timing of someone who appeared near doorways before students could decide whether silence counted as compliance. She read the short written note in the empty classroom after dismissal. Fragment triggered by Sports Festival announcement and visual contact with Todoroki Shoto.
Images: ice, arena, crowd, cold immobilization, body unable to move, old scar heat. No confirmed immediate danger. Possible tournament context. Emotional tone: pressure, exposure, pain, recognition. Kurose read it twice. Then looked at him.
"You wrote recognition""Yes""Recognition of what?" Ren looked at the bandage under his sleeve.
"Unclear""Student risk?"
"Possibly me. Possibly Todoroki. Possibly both""Medical symptoms?"
"Scar itch. Brief. No heat. No visible change""Did you report to medical?"
"Not yet" Kurose's eyebrow rose.
"I was reporting through channel first""The channel includes medical symptoms""Yes""So" Ren closed his eyes.
"I will report to Recovery Girl""Now""Yes, sensei" She placed the note into a sealed folder.
"Good report" Ren opened his eyes.
"That was efficient""That was you not acting on it alone" He had no response. Kurose continued "This is what the protocol is for. Not certainty. Not drama. Channel" Channel. Structure. Not alone. He nodded once.
"Understood" Kurose's gaze softened by a degree.
"Also, your parents must be informed that a fragment occurred if it materially affects your safety or medical status""It may not""Did your scar react?"
"Briefly""Then it may" Ren sighed.
"Yes, sensei""Hana will be less angry if you tell her before she extracts it from your posture" That was unfortunately true.
"She is not angry" Kurose looked at him.
"She is terrified with excellent manners" Ren considered.
"Accurate""Tell her""Yes" That evening, the Sports Festival dominated the news. U. A. had held a press conference. Nezu's public language had been almost identical to the internal announcement, with fewer student-specific safeguards and more civic framing. The school would proceed. Security would be enhanced. Students' safety remained highest priority. Fear would not dictate the future. The Symbol of Peace would appear if his duties allowed. The Hero Public Safety Commission supported U. A.' s decision.
Parents would receive updated guidance. Details remained limited due to ongoing investigation. Commentators did what commentators did. Some praised U. A.' s courage. Some called it reckless. Some argued that canceling would embolden villains. Some argued that continuing would exploit students. Some asked whether All Might's presence had saved U. A. from catastrophe or revealed how dependent the school was on him.
Ren sat on the couch at home with his notebook closed, the television muted, and Hana reading the official parent guidance beside him. Daichi stood near the kitchen counter making tea with more force than tea required. Hana reached the section on participation and looked at Ren.
"You want to participate""Yes" She closed her eyes briefly. Daichi set down a cup.
"Medically cleared only""Yes""No loopholes""No loopholes" Hana opened her eyes.
"You had a fragment today" Ren looked at Kurose's message on his phone. Traitor. Correct. Traitor.
"Yes" Hana's mouth tightened.
"Sports Festival?"
"Yes""About you?"
"Possibly" Daichi sat slowly. Ren explained only what the protocol allowed and what he understood. Ice. Arena. Crowd. Cold. Scar heat. Todoroki. No immediate danger. Medical report pending. Unclear meaning. Hana listened without interrupting. That was worse. At the end, she asked "Do you still want to participate?" Ren looked at the muted screen. Footage of the U. A. stadium from last year played behind a commentator's moving mouth. Students ran. Crowds cheered. Bright banners moved in the wind.
Everyone in the footage looked younger because they existed before USJ.
"Yes" Hana's hands closed around the parent guidance paper.
"Why?" The answer could have been transfer. It could have been visibility. It could have been to prove U. A. wrong. It could have been because every year of training had led toward a public measurement large enough to make the system look again. All true. Incomplete. He said "Because if I only avoid danger after USJ, then USJ decides the shape of my life" Daichi looked at him. Hana's face changed.
Ren continued "But if I participate by damaging myself to prove USJ did not change me, then USJ also decides the shape of my life" Hana's grip loosened slightly.
"I do not know the correct path yet" Daichi nodded slowly.
"That is better than pretending you do" Ren looked down.
"The Sports Festival is an opportunity. It is also pressure. It is also public reassurance. It is also a machine" Hana's voice was soft.
"And you want to walk into the machine""Yes""Why?" This time, the answer was smaller. Maybe truer.
"Because I want to be seen" Silence. The words hurt more outside his head. Hana's eyes filled. Daichi looked away. Ren forced himself not to retract them. Not to add qualifiers. Not to convert want into strategy. Hana set the paper down and took his uninjured hand.
"Then we make rules so being seen does not mean being spent" Ren's throat tightened. Daichi nodded.
"Yes" They spent the next hour making rules. Not training rules. Participation rules. Medical clearance required. Recovery Girl approval required. No unsupervised preparation. No hiding symptoms. No using fragments as private strategy if safety risk was involved. No competing through injury beyond approved limits. No refusing stoppage orders from faculty, referees, medical staff, or parents if parents were authorized to intervene. Ren argued that the last one was structurally unusual.
Hana said "Good" Daichi wrote it down. By the end, the Sports Festival existed in the apartment not as a dream, not as an inevitable stage, but as a permitted risk under hostile supervision. Ren suspected this was what love looked like when it learned paperwork. His phone buzzed. Shinso. You participating? Ren looked at it. Typed: If cleared. You? The reply came quickly. Yes. Then: If there is one seat. Ren typed: You are taking it. Shinso: Yes. Ren: Good. Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.
Shinso: You too. Ren looked at the message. Then typed: Yes. A pause. Then: Don't make me regret being encouraging. Ren almost smiled. Carefully. He wrote: No promises. Shinso: Terrible. Ren set the phone down. Hana watched him.
"Shinso?"
"Yes""He is participating?"
"Yes" Daichi leaned back.
"Of course" Hana's expression was unreadable.
"Good" Ren looked at her.
"You say that about potential competition?"
"I say that about a boy choosing a future" Ren had no answer. That happened more often now. Outside, the evening news continued silently. The public was already building its story. U. A. would stand. Heroes would rise. Students would show courage. Fear would lose. Simple. Useful. Incomplete. Ren opened his notebook for five allowed minutes before bed. He wrote: Sports Festival confirmed. Public reassurance. Private cost. Transfer path reopens under pressure. Shinso says if there is one seat, he is taking it.
Correct. I want to be seen. He stopped. His hand shook once. Not from injury. He let the sentence stay. Then added: Rule: being seen cannot mean being spent. The page looked too honest. He closed the notebook before he could make it more acceptable. In the dark of his room later, he lay awake longer than he should have, listening to rain begin again against the window. Fragments moved behind his eyes. Stadium lights. Ice. Crowd noise. A quiet boy split in half by inheritance and refusal. A body trapped under cold.
Old scar heat. Recognition. Pain. Ren breathed in. Ribs answered less sharply than before. Progress. Not enough. Repeatable. Somewhere else, Shinso was probably staring at a blue envelope and pretending the word rescue did not matter. Somewhere else, Izuku was probably writing rules he did not yet know how to follow. Somewhere else, All Might was probably coughing blood into a cloth while deciding how to smile for a nation that needed him to look unbroken. U. A. wanted reassurance. Villains wanted fear.
Students wanted futures. Systems wanted stories. Ren wanted to be seen without being consumed by the looking. That seemed like a difficult path. Then again, he had never trusted easy ones.
