Iida Tenya did not intend to lie. That was the worst part. When Manual asked if he understood the patrol boundaries, he answered yes. When Manual explained that Hosu was unstable after recent villain activity, he answered yes. When Manual told him that internship students were not to separate from their supervising hero under any circumstances, especially with the Hero Killer investigation still active in the city, he answered yes. Every answer was true. At the time. Truth changed shape when a name entered it.
Ingenium. Tensei. Brother. Hero. Hospital bed. Critical injury. Possibility of permanent loss. The words had followed him through orientation, through equipment check, through Manual's careful professionalism, through the city streets where every alley seemed to hold too much shadow and every siren seemed to arrive a second too late. Iida walked beside Manual with perfect posture. That was how he kept himself together. Manual noticed anyway.
"A little stiff, kid" Iida adjusted his glasses.
"I apologize""Not a criticism""I understand" Manual glanced at him.
"Do you?" Iida's hands tightened at his sides.
"Yes" Manual did not press immediately. He was older than Iida had expected, not in years but in the tired way of practical heroes, the kind who knew that public safety was usually less dramatic than the cameras preferred. He had already checked in twice with Iida about food, once about sleep, and once about whether Iida needed to visit the hospital after shift with approved supervision. Iida had answered correctly. That was becoming a problem. Correct answers were easy to stack between himself and collapse.
Manual stopped near a corner where traffic lights blinked red over a partially cleared street.
"Your school sent a welfare note" Iida's shoulders went rigid.
"I am aware""Good. Then you know I am not bringing this up because I enjoy paperwork""I understand" Manual turned toward him fully.
"Your brother is a hero. A good one. A lot of people here respect him" Iida felt the sentence strike somewhere deep. He bowed before he could stop himself.
"Thank you" Manual's face softened.
"That respect does not require you to become useful before you are ready" Iida's eyes lifted. The words sounded too much like U. A. Too much like Akiyama. Too much like a door he did not want opened in public. Manual continued.
"If you need to step back during patrol, say so. If you need to visit the hospital, say so. If you feel the investigation is affecting your judgment, say so" Iida's mouth dried. He remembered the consultation room. Akiyama's voice.
"If you hear your brother's name and it sounds like an order, stop" Iida had not replied to that message. Because replying would have made it real. He answered Manual now.
"I will report if my judgment is compromised" Manual looked at him for a long moment. Then nodded.
"All right" The city screamed before either of them could say more. The first explosion came from the south. Then sirens. Then another sound, heavier and wronger, like metal being crushed inside a throat. Manual turned instantly.
"Villain attack. Stay close""Yes" They ran. The next few minutes fractured into commands. Evacuation route. Civilian down. Water pressure line ruptured. Smoke above the commercial district. Reports of multiple monsters. Nomu. Iida heard the word over Manual's comm and felt USJ enter the street like a ghost he had never personally seen but had heard enough about to fear correctly. Manual pulled a civilian away from falling glass. Iida helped move debris from a doorway.
His engines thrummed beneath his calves, eager, controlled, waiting. He carried one injured man to the sidewalk. He blocked a panicking driver from turning into an evacuation lane. He followed orders. He moved with purpose. For several minutes, he was almost what he had promised to be. Then he saw the scarf. Not a hero scarf. Not exactly. A strip of cloth vanishing around the corner of a narrow side street near an older commercial block. A shape moving too quickly into shadow. A blade catching light. Iida stopped.
Manual shouted something behind him. A civilian cried out. The comm crackled. Hero Killer sighting unconfirmed near— The rest broke under static. Iida's breath vanished. Ingenium. His brother's name did not sound like memory. It sounded like command. Stop. Akiyama's message entered. If his name sounds like an order, stop. Iida stopped. For one heartbeat. Only one. Then the blade flashed again at the mouth of the alley, and the command returned louder. His legs moved. Manual shouted "Iida!" Iida ran.
The alley smelled of damp concrete, blood, and oil. It narrowed after the first turn, walls pressing close, lights broken overhead. A pro hero lay against one wall, breathing hard, blood running from a cut across his arm. Native. Iida recognized him from professional rankings and civic rescue records before fear could name him only victim. The man standing over him turned. He was thinner than the shadow he cast. Bandages. Blades. Wild hair. Eyes that looked as if the world had failed a test he had written in blood.
Stain. The Hero Killer. Iida's engines roared before his mind did. Stain's mouth curved.
"Another one" Iida stepped forward. His hands shook. He forced them still.
"I am Tenya Iida" His voice echoed in the alley.
"The younger brother of the hero you attacked" Stain tilted his head. The blade in his hand dripped red. Iida's breath burned.
"I am here to stop you" Native's eyes widened.
"Kid, run" Iida did not look away from Stain.
"I cannot" Stain moved. Too fast. Not faster than Iida in a straight line. Faster than the alley allowed. Iida launched forward with Recipro, engines screaming, aiming to drive Stain away from Native and into the wall before the villain could close distance. Stain slipped under the line of attack, blade grazing Iida's arm as he passed. Pain opened. Small cut. Enough. Stain's tongue touched blood. Iida's body locked. The fall was immediate and humiliating. His knees hit concrete. His arms failed to catch him.
His engines died mid-vibration, leaving silence where power should have been. The alley tilted sideways. Find this and other great novels on the author's preferred platform. Support original creators! Stain crouched near him.
"Revenge" Iida could not move. His eyes could. That was worse. Stain looked down at him with something like disgust and satisfaction braided together.
"Your brother was a hero. You are only a child wearing his name as a knife" Iida's heart slammed against paralysis. He tried to speak. His mouth did not obey. Stain stood.
"The name Ingenium deserves better than this" The words entered like poison. Not because they were wholly false. Because they were close enough to something Iida feared. Native tried to move. Stain struck him down again without looking.
"Stay still. I will deal with the false one first" Iida screamed inside his locked body. Move. Move. Move. The engines did nothing. His brother's name sounded like an order again. Not to stop. To die correctly. Then another voice struck the alley.
"Get away from him!" Green lightning cracked above the narrow street. Midoriya Izuku hit the ground between Stain and Iida with his body lowered, one arm raised, eyes too wide and too steady at once. Not broken. Not yet. Iida's frozen heart jolted. Midoriya. No. Not here. Stain turned.
"A student" Midoriya's breathing was uneven, but his stance was deliberate. He held his phone in one hand for a fraction of a second before shoving it away. Location sent. Ren. Todoroki. Anyone. Everyone. He had done one thing before entering. Tell someone. Akiyama's voice again, remembered from the cafeteria through Midoriya's fear. Tell an adult before following. Midoriya had not quite done that. He had told the person connected to adults by protocol. Close enough to matter. Maybe.
"Iida" Midoriya said without looking back "I found you" Iida could not answer. Stain smiled.
"You came for a friend""Yes""No hesitation" Midoriya swallowed.
"No" Stain's gaze sharpened.
"Why?" Midoriya's hands trembled. Then steadied.
"Because he needs help" Stain laughed softly.
"Good" That word, from that mouth, sounded wrong. Midoriya's face tightened. Stain moved. Midoriya did not meet him head-on. He should have. The old Midoriya would have. One burst. One broken bone. One desperate heroic impact. Instead, he shifted sideways, a small green flicker moving through his legs and shoulder, less force than fear wanted, more control than panic liked. Stain's blade sliced air near his cheek rather than skin. Midoriya stumbled, recovered, and moved again.
"Small" he whispered to himself Stain heard. His eyes gleamed.
"You restrain yourself" Midoriya did not answer. Good. Do not answer the ideology. Move. Stain attacked with knife and sword together, body low, angles sharp. Midoriya gave ground, not because he was winning but because the alley allowed very few kinds of survival. He used the wall once, not to leap wildly, but to change direction. Green sparked along his fingers and faded before it became damage.
Iida watched from the concrete, trapped inside a body that had failed him because his blood had become a key in someone else's mouth. Midoriya was here. Midoriya would get hurt. Because of him. Because Iida had run. Because his brother's name had sounded like an order and he had obeyed. Stain feinted left, cut right, and nicked Midoriya's shoulder. Midoriya hissed. Stain's tongue flashed. Midoriya's body locked. He fell hard. Not fully paralyzed? No. His fingers twitched once and then stopped.
Stain looked down at him.
"Blood type difference" he murmured "Shorter" Then he raised the blade. Iida's mind broke against his own stillness. No. No. No. Stain said "You are closer than most, boy. But you defend a false hero's revenge. That stains even good instinct" Midoriya's eyes moved toward Iida. No accusation. That hurt more than accusation would have.
"Iida" Midoriya forced out through shallow breath "This is not" His jaw locked briefly. Then he managed the rest.
"Your brother" The words struck. His brother. Not Stain. Not the alley. Not the blade. Not the order. His brother. Tensei lying in a hospital bed. Tensei smiling in old interviews. Tensei lifting a child away from a traffic accident on the news. Tensei telling him once, years ago, that running fast only mattered if you knew what you were running toward. Iida's vision blurred. Stain's blade descended. Ice erupted through the alley. Not wild. Not the massive wall from the Sports Festival.
A narrow, controlled spine of ice shot between Stain and Midoriya, forcing the blade aside and driving Stain back half a step. Heat followed. Small fire along the upper edge, steam rising in a controlled curtain, not enough to burn Midoriya, enough to disrupt vision. Todoroki Shoto landed near the mouth of the alley, one hand extended, one side cold, one side warm. His eyes took in everything. Iida on the ground. Midoriya paralyzed. Native bleeding. Stain between them. The alley. The walls. The angle.
"Midoriya" Todoroki said "You texted like an idiot" Midoriya's eyes widened with desperate offense.
"I sent location""To Akiyama and me. Not the supervising hero first" Stain watched him with interest. Todoroki's gaze did not leave the villain.
"Good enough to get us here. Bad enough to discuss later" Midoriya would have apologized if his mouth fully worked. Todoroki stepped forward. Stain smiled.
"Another child" Todoroki's left hand warmed. Right foot iced the ground.
"Move away from them" Stain's eyes narrowed.
"You carry a famous fire" Todoroki's face hardened.
"I carry mine" The words were quiet. They filled the alley anyway. Stain moved first. Todoroki did not flood the space. That would have trapped Midoriya and Iida too. He used narrow lines, ice as interruption rather than domination, fire as flash and pressure rather than explosion. Ren would have noticed the difference. Todoroki noticed it himself and hated that part of him wanted to know if Akiyama would call it good.
Stain avoided the first ice line, sliced the second, and ducked under a flame burst with inhuman precision. He closed distance fast enough that Todoroki had to step back, raising a small ice barrier that Stain kicked off rather than struck.
"Useful power" Stain said "Useful name. Useful bloodline" Todoroki's eyes sharpened.
"My father is not here""He is everywhere in your stance" That hit. Stain saw it. He was very good at seeing where to cut. Todoroki's fire flickered too high. Then lowered. No. Small is repeatable. The phrase had come from Ren. Annoying. Useful. Todoroki adjusted. A thin sheet of ice formed under Stain's foot. Not to trap fully. To alter friction. Stain slipped half a step. Midoriya's fingers twitched again. Iida's body began to return in pieces. Pain first. Then breath. Then fingers.
The paralysis receded like chains turning to water. He could move one hand. Not enough. More than before. Stain noticed. Of course he did. He smiled at Iida.
"Will you crawl toward revenge again?" Iida's fingers dug into concrete. The question was a blade. His brother's name rose. Ingenium. Order. Stop. If his name sounds like an order, stop. Iida stopped. Not physically. He was already on the ground. He stopped the motion inside that had been trying to drag his body toward Stain with his brother's name clenched in its teeth. Midoriya's voice strained.
"Iida" Todoroki fought, ice and fire snapping in measured arcs, buying seconds with discipline he had not possessed before the Sports Festival and pain he had not chosen as cleanly as he wished. Stain cut him once across the arm. Todoroki hissed but kept moving. Stain licked the blood. Todoroki's body slowed but did not fully lock. Maybe the cut was shallow. Maybe blood type. Maybe luck. He dropped to one knee, still able to move one hand enough to throw ice between Stain and Native. Stain laughed.
"The children crawl for one another. Better than most professionals" Midoriya's eyes burned.
"Don't call that" His body trembled. The paralysis weakened.
"Don't call that pure" Stain looked at him. Midoriya forced his hand against the ground. Green light flickered, low and controlled.
"I didn't come because I'm pure" His fingers scraped forward.
"I came because my friend was alone" Stain's smile sharpened.
"Then save him" The words landed on Midoriya like a command from someone unworthy to give it. Midoriya did not launch. He breathed. Damage is not tuition. He pushed small. Enough to roll his shoulder. Enough to move his arm. Not enough to break. Stain stepped toward him. Then Iida moved. Not fast. Not heroic. Not clean. His hand caught Midoriya's sleeve and pulled him back half a foot, away from the blade line. The motion cost everything. Iida gasped. Stain paused. Todoroki's eyes flicked toward him.
Iida's voice scraped out.
"Midoriya" Midoriya turned his head as much as he could. Iida's eyes were wet.
"I am sorry" Midoriya's face twisted.
"Later" Todoroki said from one knee "Move now. Apologize after surviving" That sounded like Aizawa. Good. Iida tried to rise. His body shook. His engines sputtered once. Stain's gaze sharpened.
"Ah" The sound was almost satisfied.
"You hear it now. The shame. The correction. The chance to die with a cleaner face" Iida froze. Because Stain had found the next order. Not Ingenium. Shame. Die correctly. Redeem the wrong move by paying too much. For one terrible second, Iida almost accepted. Then he heard Ren's voice, not in memory alone, but in the shape of the warning. If his name sounds like an order, stop. His brother's name was not the only thing that could sound like an order. Shame could. Heroism could. Purity could. Justice could.
Iida inhaled. His legs trembled.
"My brother's name is not yours to use" Stain went still. Iida pushed himself to one knee.
"It is not mine to use like this either" Midoriya's eyes widened. Todoroki's expression shifted. Iida's engines coughed. Then steadied. Weak. But present.
"I came here for revenge" The words tore coming out.
"I called it justice" Stain's face darkened. Iida lifted his head.
"I was wrong" The alley changed. Not enough to save anyone. Enough to move something inside it. Stain snarled.
"Then prove you can still move as a hero" He lunged. Todoroki's ice burst low, disrupting the path. Midoriya forced his body sideways with a small burst, grabbing Native's collar and dragging him away from the line of attack. Iida's engines fired in a damaged, uneven burst. Not Recipro. Not full speed. A short, ugly movement. He slammed his shoulder into Stain's side just as Todoroki's flame flashed across the villain's vision and Midoriya's controlled strike hit Stain's wrist. Three imperfect motions. One opening.
The blade flew. Stain twisted, caught Midoriya's sleeve, nearly cut him with the second knife, but Todoroki's ice pinned the weapon arm against the wall for half a second. Iida's leg swept low, not to destroy, not to punish, but to take stance. Stain fell to one knee. Then he broke the ice. Because monsters built of ideology and muscle did not fall cleanly. He rose with blood on his teeth. His eyes burned.
"Better" The word was terrible. He looked at Midoriya.
"At least you move for others" Midoriya pushed himself upright, breathing hard. He did not answer. Good. Stain looked at Todoroki.
"At least you begin to carry your own flame" Todoroki's eyes narrowed. He did not answer either. Stain looked at Iida.
"And you" Iida's body trembled. Stain's voice lowered.
"You almost understood too late" Iida did not look away.
"I know" Stain lunged. The next exchange was not graceful. It was survival with sharp edges. Midoriya moved in short controlled bursts, every movement less than his fear demanded. Todoroki alternated ice and fire in narrow lanes, keeping Stain from closing without freezing the entire alley or burning his friends. Iida stayed near Native and Midoriya, not chasing openings when Stain baited him, not letting his engines turn grief into direction. Stain cut all three. Not deeply enough every time.
Enough to make them respect the blade. Enough to make the alley smell like blood and steam and fear. Midoriya's shoulder hit the wall. Todoroki's left sleeve burned at the edge. Iida's calf screamed where old acceleration met new strain. Native, half-conscious, tried to rise and failed.
"Young ones" he gasped "Run" Iida turned his head. For one second, he looked at the hero he had forgotten while chasing the villain. Shame rose. Order. Stop. He did. He did not chase Stain when the villain stepped back. Instead, he shifted toward Native. Protect the living. Midoriya saw it and moved with him. Todoroki covered them. Stain saw it too. His smile vanished.
"So you can learn" He raised his blade. Then the alley filled with heat. Not Todoroki's. Bigger. Heavier. Endeavor's flame roared above the street beyond, lighting the mouth of the alley orange as a Nomu crashed through nearby masonry and a pro hero shouted orders. The force of the wider Hosu crisis pressed into their narrow fight for one second. Stain's eyes flicked toward the sound. Todoroki's face tightened. Iida's engines fired. Midoriya moved. They did not need words.
Todoroki sent ice low to bind Stain's forward foot. Midoriya struck the already-injured wrist with a controlled burst that made his own fingers scream but not break. Iida drove in from the side with the last clean angle his legs could manage, not toward Stain's throat, not toward revenge, but toward the center of balance. Stain hit the ground. Todoroki iced the wall behind him, pinning one arm. Iida pinned the other with his body weight and shaking hands.
Midoriya kicked the blade away, then fell to one knee, breathing hard. For one second, it was over. Then Stain smiled. Blood from his own mouth touched his tongue. His body strained. He nearly rose anyway. The fear that passed through the alley was not cowardice. It was recognition. Some people made defeat feel like a temporary misunderstanding. Then pro heroes arrived.
Gran Torino first, too fast for the eye to catch properly, striking Stain's head into the ground before the villain could complete whatever impossible movement he had begun. Endeavor's flames lit the alley mouth but did not enter fully. Manual arrived with another hero behind him, face pale and furious, eyes landing on Iida like a blow.
"Iida!" Iida looked at him. No words. Manual's expression twisted. Relief. Anger. Fear. All of it deserved. Gran Torino looked at Midoriya.
"Young fool" Midoriya tried to bow while kneeling and nearly fell over.
"Sorry" Gran Torino smacked the air near his head, not quite hitting him.
"Later" Todoroki sat back against the wall, breathing hard. Endeavor's shadow fell across the alley entrance. For a second, fire and blood and family history tried to enter the same space. Todoroki did not look at him. Not yet. Endeavor looked at the scene. Three students. One wounded pro. The Hero Killer restrained. His jaw tightened.
"Medical" That was all he said. Good. Maybe. Not enough to trust. But good for now. Iida remained on his knees beside Native. His hands shook. Not from paralysis now. From what had almost happened. Manual crouched before him.
"Tenya" The use of his first name broke what discipline had left. Iida bowed until his forehead nearly touched the concrete.
"I am sorry" Manual's voice was hard.
"You should be" Iida flinched. Manual continued "And alive enough to hear the rest later" Iida nodded once. Midoriya looked at him. Todoroki looked too. No one absolved him. No one abandoned him either. Stain, pinned and half-conscious, laughed once. The sound pulled every eye back. His gaze found Midoriya first. Then Todoroki. Then Iida.
"Remember this" he rasped "A hero's name is not cleaned by law. Only by blood" Iida's face went white. Midoriya's hand curled. Todoroki's fire flickered. Then Iida spoke. Quietly.
"No" Stain's eyes shifted. Iida lifted his head.
"My brother's name was not clean because he bled" His voice shook.
"He made people safe" Silence. Even Stain stopped smiling. Iida continued "I forgot that" The words hurt. They also stood. Gran Torino glanced at him, then away. Manual's mouth tightened. Midoriya's eyes shone. Todoroki looked at the ground. Endeavor's expression remained unreadable from the alley mouth. Stain whispered "We will see" Then his eyes rolled back. The world did not become safe. It became procedure. Medical checks. Statements. Scolding. Emergency transport. Legal issues. Agency accountability.
Student misconduct. Hero Killer containment. Hosu still burning in places beyond the alley. Nomu still being handled. Endeavor still fighting. The scene broke apart into adults, stretchers, comms, and lights. Midoriya sat on a curb under protest while Gran Torino yelled at him in short bursts and a medic cleaned the cut on his shoulder. Todoroki allowed his arm to be bandaged while refusing to look toward his father. Iida sat wrapped in an emergency blanket, engines silent, hands clenched around nothing.
Manual stood nearby, speaking to another hero, face tight. Native had been moved first. Alive. That mattered. Midoriya leaned toward Iida when the medic turned away.
"Iida" Iida did not look up.
"I am sorry" Midoriya's face crumpled.
"I said later" Iida almost laughed. It failed.
"I almost made you die for my revenge" Midoriya's eyes lowered.
"Yes" Iida flinched. Midoriya continued, voice shaking.
"But you stopped""Too late" Todoroki, from the other side, said "Late is different from never" Iida looked at him. Todoroki's expression was tired and unreadable and very young.
"I am learning that" The sentence came from somewhere larger than the alley. Iida understood enough not to ask. His phone had survived. Cracked screen. Functional. He took it out with fingers that did not feel like his. There were messages. From his family. From U. A. From Midoriya earlier. From Akiyama. If his name sounds like an order, stop. Iida stared. The words blurred. He had heard it. Not soon enough to stay away. Soon enough to stop becoming the order completely. His hands shook as he typed. I heard it.
He sent it before shame could turn the message into something longer and cleaner and less true. Midoriya looked at him.
"Who?" Iida lowered the phone.
"Akiyama" Midoriya's face softened with painful recognition. Todoroki looked toward the street.
"Good" Iida closed his eyes. The word hurt. It also held. Above the alley, Hosu's smoke climbed into the night. The Hero Killer had fallen. Ingenium still lay in a hospital. Iida Tenya had not become justice. Not tonight. He had almost become a wound with engines. He had almost let his brother's name become a blade. But when the order came again, through blood and shame and the mouth of a murderer, he had heard the warning. Stop. And for one broken second, he had. It had not saved everything.
It had saved enough for there to be consequences. Enough for apology. Enough for repair to begin badly, honestly, and alive.
