Ren was asleep when Bakugo won the Sports Festival. That felt unfair to Bakugo. Probably. It also felt unfair to Ren, which was less rational and therefore more irritating. He woke from a fever-thick dream of ice cracking into applause and found the infirmary dimmer than before, the ceiling unchanged, the left side of his body still busy being expensive, and Hana asleep in the chair beside him with one hand resting near the bed.
Daichi sat by the window with his phone in his hand, screen turned down against his knee. He looked awake in the way people looked awake after deciding sleep was a betrayal. Ren blinked. The room took shape slowly. Medical monitor. IV line. Transparent dressing. Plastic sleeve on the table with All Might's note inside. No stadium audio. No shouting. No Shinso in the chair. That last one took an extra second. Ren turned his eyes toward the empty seat. Daichi noticed.
"Kurose took him to eat" Ren tried to speak. His throat objected. Daichi reached for the water before Ren asked. Straw. Small sip. No argument. Ren swallowed.
"Final?" Daichi looked at his phone. Then at Ren. His expression became careful.
"Bakugo won" Ren stared at the ceiling.
"Todoroki?"
"Second""Method?" Daichi hesitated. That answered too much. Hana stirred in the chair but did not wake fully. Daichi lowered his voice.
"I only saw summary clips. Kurose said not to show you video""Audio?"
"No""Report" Daichi's mouth moved. A tired almost-smile.
"You sound like Recovery Girl""High standard""She would disagree""Report" Daichi looked at the dark phone again.
"Todoroki used fire once. Small. Enough to make Bakugo react differently. Then he stopped using it" Ren closed his eyes. Small fire. Then refusal. Not regression. Not resolution. A step and a wall.
"Bakugo?"
"Angry""Baseline""More than baseline. He won, but he seemed furious that Todoroki didn't fight fully" Ren pictured it too easily. Bakugo demanding full force because anything less made victory feel like theft. Todoroki standing with one half of himself newly awake and not yet available on command. The crowd wanting a conclusion clean enough for a medal ceremony. No one receiving it. Good. No. Not good. True. Ren opened his eyes.
"Was Todoroki injured?"
"Stable, according to Kurose""Midoriya?"
"Still being treated. Broken fingers. Stable""Uraraka?"
"Stable""Kenta, Arai, Sano?" Daichi's face softened.
"Stable. Annoying. Eating unauthorized snacks in a hallway according to Kurose" Ren let out one breath that might have become laughter in a healthier body. The ribs warned him. He stopped. Daichi leaned forward.
"Pain?"
"Four with medication. Six under laughter threat""Then no comedy""Tell Sano""I would rather not engage him without faculty support" Hana opened her eyes.
"Sano is a lot" Ren looked at her.
"You woke""I was never fully asleep" Daichi said "Same family trait" Hana ignored him and looked at Ren.
"You missed the final""Yes""Are you upset?" Ren considered lying. The monitor waited with institutional malice.
"Yes" Hana nodded.
"Do you want to know more?"
"Yes""Do you need to know more tonight?" Ren looked toward the plastic-sleeved note. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. Then toward the empty chair where Shinso had been. Then down at the dressing over his arm.
"No" Hana's shoulders lowered.
"Good" Daichi said "We are all becoming very proud of boring answers" Ren whispered "Concerning development" Hana's mouth trembled into a small smile.
"Very" The door opened before the smile could become too large. Recovery Girl entered with Kurose behind her. Shinso followed, holding a wrapped sandwich and looking as if he had been betrayed into nutrition. Aizawa came last. Ren went still. Aizawa looked worse than his voice had sounded. The capture weapon scarf was absent. Bandages disappeared beneath his collar and cuffs. His posture remained straight only by decision, not comfort. The skin around one eye was bruised. One arm hung with slight stiffness.
He looked like someone had argued with a building and then returned to work because the building had not filed the paperwork correctly. Hana straightened. Daichi stood. Aizawa gave them a shallow nod.
"Mr. and Mrs. Akiyama" Hana's eyes moved over him once.
"You should also be in bed" Aizawa's face did not change.
"Yes" Daichi said "That was not a disagreement""No" Recovery Girl pointed at Aizawa without looking.
"He has seven minutes before I make that statement enforceable" Aizawa looked at Ren.
"You're awake""Yes" Love what you're reading? Discover and support the author on the platform they originally published on.
"Status" Ren almost smiled. Everyone asked status now.
"Pain four with medication. Fever lower. Scar heat mild. No dizziness. Ribs stable if I do not laugh. Left shoulder bad. Emotional state annoyed by missing data" Aizawa nodded.
"Good enough for five minutes" Recovery Girl said "I gave seven""I plan to use fewer""Miracle" Kurose stepped forward with her tablet.
"Principal Nezu is joining remotely for provisional documentation review. This is not a final classification meeting. This is an initial language meeting" Ren looked at her.
"Language meeting""Yes" Shinso dropped into the chair near the wall.
"That sounds worse than combat" Kurose looked at him.
"You are here because Akiyama requested you remain in the room if his parents agreed" Shinso froze. Ren had not remembered asking. Maybe he had. Fever made custody of decisions complicated. Hana looked at Shinso.
"We agreed" Daichi nodded. Shinso looked away.
"Bad judgment all around" Recovery Girl said "If you make this emotional, I will remove you" Shinso opened his sandwich.
"Medically obedient" Aizawa looked at him for one second. Then at Ren.
"Do you understand what this meeting is?" Ren nodded slightly.
"U. A. needs words before public rumor writes worse ones" Kurose said "Yes" Aizawa added "And before internal systems use careless language that becomes policy" Ren's eyes moved to Aizawa. That was not an accidental sentence.
"Thank you" Aizawa's face stayed flat.
"Don't thank me yet" Kurose connected the tablet to the wall screen. Nezu appeared seated at a desk somewhere private, paws folded, expression mild enough to be alarming.
"Good evening" No one in the room believed the evening was good. Nezu continued anyway.
"Thank you for agreeing to this limited discussion. Akiyama, you may end it at any point. Mrs. and Mr. Akiyama, Recovery Girl may end it medically. Kurose may end it pedagogically. Eraser Head may end it if I begin sounding too much like a principal" Aizawa said "You already do""Then we shall proceed quickly" Kurose brought up a document. The title filled the screen. PROVISIONAL QUIRK OBSERVATION RECORD — AKIYAMA REN Ren's mouth went dry. Hana's hand moved near his. Daichi sat again, slowly.
Shinso stopped pretending to eat. Kurose did not look at Ren yet. She read.
"Student: Akiyama Ren. Department: General Studies. Current registration status before event: Quirkless designation with disputed or unconfirmed adaptive physiology observations. Incident context: U. A. Sports Festival tournament match, Todoroki Shoto versus Akiyama Ren, followed by emergency response to falling ice hazard" Ren stared at the title. Provisional. Observation. Record. Not judgment. Not destiny. Still a cage with better hinges. Kurose continued.
"Observed phenomenon: acute activation of a conditional trauma-adaptive physiological response under combined immobilization, cold exposure, musculoskeletal stress, and immediate external hazard" Recovery Girl said "Add severe pain and inflammatory risk" Kurose typed.
"Added" Aizawa said "External hazard should be separated from match pressure. He moved toward the hazard, not the opponent" Kurose typed.
"Added" Nezu nodded.
"Important distinction" Ren swallowed. Todoroki had asked why. Different direction. Aizawa's eyes moved toward Ren.
"That distinction will protect you" Ren whispered "From what?"
"People who think your Quirk activates because you want to win badly enough" The room went quiet. There it was. The bad myth. The one the public would love. The one agencies would love. The one Ren, in the worst parts of himself, might love too. Hana's face hardened.
"That is not what happened""No" Aizawa said "So we write it before someone else does" Kurose continued.
"Provisional functional description: The response appears to create temporary connective-tissue bracing, scar-based anchoring, and stress redistribution across previously injured or adapted tissue patterns. It allowed limited emergency movement despite partial immobilization. It did not appear to heal existing injury during activation" Recovery Girl said "Stronger" Kurose looked at her. Recovery Girl crossed her arms.
"Write: no evidence of acute healing, regeneration, pain elimination, or damage immunity" Kurose typed. Ren watched the words appear. No acute healing. No regeneration. No pain elimination. No damage immunity. Every no felt like a fence. Every fence felt like air. Aizawa said "Add not a strength enhancer" Kurose typed. Nezu tilted his head.
"Not primarily a strength enhancer?" Aizawa's visible eye narrowed.
"Do not leave room for recruiters to call it one" Kurose typed. No evidence of primary strength enhancement. Aizawa nodded. Recovery Girl said "Add emergency-only based on current evidence" Ren looked at her. She looked back.
"Do not make that face""What face?"
"The face that wants useful things to be less limited" He looked away. Kurose typed. Current evidence supports emergency activation only. No safe repeatability established. Hana read the sentence aloud softly.
"No safe repeatability established" Daichi said "Good" Ren closed his eyes for one breath. The sentence hurt. Therefore useful. Nezu spoke.
"We need a provisional name for the phenomenon" The room became too still. Ren opened his eyes. On the screen, a blank field waited. PROVISIONAL NAME: Kurose looked at Ren.
"This does not have to be public" Recovery Girl added "And it does not have to sound marketable" Aizawa said "Preferably it doesn't" Shinso muttered "Team No was right there" Recovery Girl looked at him. He took a bite of sandwich. Ren stared at the blank field. Names were dangerous. Names became handles. Handles became hooks. Public names were worse. They simplified what they could not hold. Painproof. Scar Boy. Unbreakable. But a private name could also protect. It could refuse worse ones.
He thought of Recovery Girl after the entrance exam. Scar tissue isn't stronger in every way. He thought of the ring. Not healing. Holding. He thought of his own notebooks long before U. A., long before the stadium, long before anyone had wanted to write him correctly.
"Scar Tissue" Hana's eyes closed for half a second. Daichi looked down. Recovery Girl's expression shifted. Kurose typed nothing yet.
"Explain" she said Ren's throat hurt.
"It is what remains after injury. Not better than original. Not useless. Restrictive if overbuilt. Protective if placed correctly. Evidence of survival, not proof of invincibility" No one spoke. Shinso looked at the floor. Aizawa's gaze remained on Ren. Nezu's ears lowered slightly. Recovery Girl said "That is accurate enough to be unpleasant" Kurose typed. Common provisional name: Scar Tissue. Then beneath it: Acute manifestation observed during Sports Festival: Scar Lattice. Ren looked at the second line.
Scar Lattice. The words seemed too clean for what had happened. Kurose noticed.
"Do you object?"
"No""Do you consent to internal use?"
"Internal, restricted, provisional""Not public?"
"Not public" Kurose typed. Hana said "If media uses it?" Kurose's mouth tightened.
"We do not confirm" Daichi asked "Can they still guess?"
"Yes""Can they still turn it into a brand?"
"Unofficially, yes" Hana's hand curled around the bedsheet. Nezu spoke softly.
"Which is why we establish internal language designed around care rather than spectacle" Aizawa said "And why we keep training staff from saying heroic nonsense around him" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"Good. You learned from someone" Aizawa said "Painfully" Ren whispered "Contagion" Shinso said "Do not laugh""I was not""You were thinking about it""Sorry" Recovery Girl said "Illegal word" Ren corrected.
"Thank you" Hana looked proud and devastated. Kurose continued reading the document.
"Risks: severe metabolic cost, fever, inflammation, muscle rigidity, acute pain, delayed mobility impairment, possible fibrosis, possible expansion of scar-line activation with repeated exposure, psychological reinforcement of self-sacrificial behavior if misframed" Aizawa said "Move that last one higher" Kurose did. Ren watched psychological reinforcement of self-sacrificial behavior if misframed climb above several physical risks. He hated how correct it was.
Nezu said "Necessary safeguards" Kurose read as she typed.
"No unsupervised activation attempts. No Quirk provocation. No training under pain escalation conditions. No public demonstration. No replay exposure without clearance. No combat application development until medical stabilization. Welfare check required before and after all Quirk-related discussion. Parent notification required for any safety-impacting evaluation.
Student consent required for non-emergency observation beyond standard medical care" Hana said "Add that consent cannot be requested during fever, acute pain, sedation, or immediately after activation" Kurose typed immediately.
"Added" Daichi said "Add food" Everyone looked at him. He did not back down.
"I am serious. If this thing burns through his body, then food and rest are not optional side notes" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Good parent" Daichi looked startled. Hana almost smiled. Kurose typed. Metabolic support protocol required. Food, hydration, sleep, and post-activation caloric monitoring are part of safety management, not optional comfort. Ren stared at the sentence. Food in the Quirk file. Of course. Hana looked satisfied in the most terrifying way. Shinso whispered "Your Quirk has lunch rules" Ren whispered back "Envy is unbecoming""I have dinner rules by association. I'm not safe either" Aizawa looked at both of them.
They stopped. Mostly. Nezu spoke again.
"There remains the question of student responsibility" Kurose's expression sharpened.
"I have language prepared" Ren looked at her. Of course she did. Kurose read.
"Possession of a hazard-relevant Quirk response does not create an obligation for the student to enter dangerous conditions. Akiyama Ren is not to be treated as emergency equipment, structural rescue apparatus, or proof that student self-endangerment is acceptable" The room went quiet again. Hana's eyes shone. Daichi looked away. Shinso's jaw tightened. Recovery Girl said "Add bold" Kurose said "Internal format does not""Make it bold anyway" Kurose made it bold. Aizawa read the line once. Then nodded.
"Good" Ren could not look at it too long. Emergency equipment. Structural rescue apparatus. Proof. Every phrase was something he could have become if the wrong person wrote faster. Nezu said "Akiyama, do you consent to this provisional record being restricted to the following parties: principal, medical staff, your homeroom teacher, your parents, Eraser Head for safety and training relevance, and All Might under existing controlled protocol?" Hana looked at Ren sharply at the last name. Daichi did too.
Shinso looked between them and then at Ren with a face far too blank. The note from All Might sat on the table. The Symbol's attention was still a heavy object in the room. Ren said "Yes. Restricted" Nezu nodded.
"The Hero Course staff as a whole?"
"No" Kurose typed. Nezu did not argue.
"The Hero Public Safety Commission?" Hana said "No" Ren said "No" Daichi said "Absolutely no" Recovery Girl said "Over my corpse" Aizawa said "Unnecessary" Shinso said "That seemed unanimous" Nezu's smile remained mild.
"Denied for now" For now. Ren heard it. So did everyone else. Kurose wrote not authorized at this stage. That was better than never only because it was harder to challenge as fantasy. Nezu looked at Ren through the screen.
"Would you like to add a student statement?" Ren blinked.
"To the file?"
"Yes. One paragraph or less. It may be revised later" Recovery Girl said "He is feverish""Then he may decline" Everyone looked at Ren. He should decline. He was tired. His left shoulder burned. His ribs hurt. The words would matter. That meant not saying them would matter too.
"I want to add" Hana leaned closer.
"You do not have to make it perfect" That helped. Annoying. Ren stared at the ceiling while Kurose placed the cursor beneath a new heading. STUDENT STATEMENT: He spoke slowly.
"My Quirk did not activate because I wanted to win. It activated when I was trapped and there was an external hazard. I did not choose the activation fully. I chose where to move. I chose the falling ice instead of Todoroki. I do not want this to be used as proof that injury is a good way to be seen" Kurose typed. Her fingers stopped after the last sentence. The room was too quiet. Recovery Girl looked away first. Daichi covered his mouth with one hand.
Hana's fingers touched Ren's sheet but not his hand, because perhaps touching would break something in both of them. Shinso stared at the floor. Aizawa spoke after several seconds.
"Good statement" Ren closed his eyes.
"That word is everywhere""Yes" Nezu's voice was softer when he spoke.
"The statement will remain restricted. Thank you" The screen changed as Kurose saved the document. PROVISIONAL QUIRK OBSERVATION RECORD SAVED. Ren felt something in him loosen. Not peace. Never that easy. But the first bad translation had not won. For now. Nezu said "This will be enough for tonight. Rest, Akiyama. Mrs. and Mr. Akiyama, Kurose will provide a copy of the parent-access version. Recovery Girl, please refrain from threatening more than three departments in writing before morning" Recovery Girl smiled.
"No""Worth asking" The call ended. Kurose disconnected the tablet. No one spoke immediately. The file existed now. Scar Tissue existed in U. A. language. Not public. Not final. But written. Correctly enough to begin. Shinso leaned back and exhaled.
"They wrote it" Ren looked at him. Shinso's eyes remained on the blank wall screen.
"Not perfectly. But not badly" Ren swallowed.
"No" Shinso turned his head.
"Told you. Paperwork matters" Ren remembered his own words. He had said it to Shinso. Emergency Rescue Support. Now Shinso handed it back. Annoying. Necessary.
"Yes" Aizawa stepped closer to the bed. Recovery Girl looked ready to bite him if he stayed too long. He ignored that for exactly one sentence.
"Your Quirk is not a license. It is an emergency system. If you build a fighting style around emergencies, you are building a career around failure" Ren absorbed the words. They entered cleanly. Horrible. Useful.
"Yes, sir" Aizawa's visible eye narrowed.
"We will find out later if there is a boring part""Scar Tension" Aizawa looked at Recovery Girl. She pointed at Ren.
"He named the hypothetical safer version while feverish" Aizawa looked back at Ren.
"Of course you did" Ren whispered "It may be trainable""Later""Yes""Boringly" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Shinso groaned. Aizawa looked at him.
"You too" Shinso stiffened.
"What?"
"Later. Your Quirk is not the problem. Your lack of options after it fails is" Shinso stared. Aizawa continued.
"We'll fix that if you stop looking offended by help" Shinso's mouth opened. Closed. Opened.
"Did you just offer to train me?" Aizawa's face remained flat.
"No. I stated a problem and a likely future inconvenience" Kurose said "That is an offer in Eraser Head" Shinso looked at her. Then at Aizawa. Then down at the sandwich.
"Okay" The word was small. Aizawa nodded once.
"Eat" Shinso looked personally attacked. Recovery Girl pointed to the door.
"Out. All of you who are not parents or patients" Aizawa left first, apparently grateful for the excuse to pretend he had not just changed Shinso's life in a sentence. Kurose followed after collecting the tablet. Shinso stood last. At the door, he paused. He looked at Ren.
"They wrote Scar Tissue""Yes""Internal, restricted, provisional" Ren almost smiled.
"You listened""I absorb horrible language under stress""Useful""Unfortunately" He left. The room became smaller. Hana sat beside Ren again. Daichi exhaled and leaned back in his chair like the bones had been temporarily removed from his spine. Recovery Girl remained because removing her from a patient required forces beyond available Quirks. No one turned the tournament audio back on. The final had ended. The festival had crowned a winner. The world had already begun turning victories and losses into summaries.
But inside the infirmary, another result mattered more. A name had entered the file. Not Painproof. Not Scar Boy. Not Unbreakable. Scar Tissue. A record of damage. A warning against myth. A thing that remained. Ren closed his eyes. His body hurt. His fever pulsed. His future did not open like a door. It appeared like a document with too many restrictions and one correct name. For tonight, that was enough.
