Chương 67: The First Shared Floor
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 161 chương · ~39 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The first mixed training block began with two doors. That was not accidental. Ren knew because Kurose was involved. Gym Gamma had been divided into three zones by low barriers, tape lines, movable wall panels, observation marks, and enough clipped signs to make the room look as if a training facility had lost an argument with a legal office. One entrance was marked HERO COURSE. The other was marked CROSS-COURSE.
Between them, on the floor at the center of the gym, a thick white line divided the space without fully separating it. The line was not a wall. It was worse. Aizawa stood near the middle with his capture weapon hanging loose around his neck, looking as if the existence of teenagers in organized groups remained a personal insult. Kurose stood beside him with a clipboard. Cementoss was near the movable panels. Thirteen watched from the far end, where rescue dummies had been arranged beside a mock debris structure.
Recovery Girl sat at a medical station with a monitor, several clipboards, and the moral authority of someone who could shut down every dream in the room with one eyebrow. Ren entered through the Cross-Course door with Shinso beside him. The Hero Course students entered from the other side. Midoriya. Iida. Todoroki. Uraraka. Yaoyorozu. Tokoyami. Tsuyu. Kirishima. A few others selected by Aizawa for reasons likely related to pedagogy and suffering. Bakugo was there too. Of course.
He entered like the door had insulted him first. His eyes moved across the room, landed on the white line, then on Ren and Shinso.
"Tch" Shinso leaned toward Ren.
"Traditional greeting" Ren said "Culturally significant" Bakugo's head snapped toward them.
"I heard that" Shinso said "Growth opportunity" Ren looked forward.
"Do not" Kurose did not look up from her clipboard.
"Akiyama. Shinso. Stop provoking the explosion before the lesson begins" Bakugo bristled.
"I am not the explosion" Aizawa looked at him.
"You are often the weather warning" Kirishima made a sound that might have been laughter and swallowed it badly. Bakugo glared at everyone in range. Ren kept his face still. No scar heat. No tension. Good start. Maybe. Aizawa stepped onto the white line.
"This is not sparring" Several Hero Course students visibly adjusted expectations. Bakugo looked offended on principle. Aizawa continued.
"This is not a transfer exam. This is not a charity session. This is not Hero Course showing General Studies how real training works, and it is not Cross-Course proving you deserve to breathe the same air" Silence. Kurose added "Anyone treating it that way gets removed" Shinso whispered "A beautiful threat" Kurose said "Thank you" Shinso looked pained. Aizawa pointed at the white line.
"The line represents institutional boundary, not value. Some of you are on one side because of combat metrics. Some because of written metrics. Some because of timing. Some because the entrance system is imperfect. Some because you made choices that put you where you are. None of that matters once a scenario starts" He looked at the Hero Course students.
"You cannot assume a Cross-Course candidate is a civilian, a burden, or a rescue objective" His gaze moved to Ren and Shinso.
"You cannot assume Hero Course students are proof, shortcuts, or enemies wearing better uniforms" Ren's right hand relaxed by one degree. Aizawa noticed. Of course. Kurose stepped forward.
"Today's theme is shared floor discipline. You will work in mixed teams under scenario constraints. The goal is not victory. The goal is to observe what assumptions your body makes before your mouth explains them" Sano would have called that emotional violence with mats. Sano was not present. Unfortunate. Aizawa lifted one card.
"Scenario One. Unstable corridor. One injured civilian. One unknown villain threat. Low visibility. Limited communication. Team of four" Kurose read the first team.
"Akiyama. Midoriya. Uraraka. Iida" Ren's stomach tightened. Of course. Midoriya looked at him from across the line. Uraraka's eyes widened slightly. Iida straightened, then caught himself and let his shoulders lower by one deliberate fraction. Ren reported quietly before anyone asked.
"Yellow. History load. No heat" Recovery Girl pointed at him without looking up.
"Logged" Shinso muttered "Efficient surveillance" Aizawa said "Shinso. Todoroki. Yaoyorozu. Bakugo. You are Team Two" Shinso went perfectly still. Bakugo's grin was all teeth.
"Oh this'll be fun" Todoroki looked at Shinso. Yaoyorozu inhaled slowly. Shinso said "I regret every ambition that led here" Aizawa looked unmoved.
"Good" The teams separated. Ren crossed the white line. It should not have mattered. It did. The floor felt exactly the same. That was the point. Midoriya approached with notebookless hands. Progress dramatic enough to require documentation. Uraraka gave Ren a small smile.
"Hi""Hi" Iida bowed.
"Akiyama""Iida" They stood there for one second too long. Midoriya broke it.
"Status?" Ren blinked. Then answered.
"Yellow. No heat. No fragment. No pain increase. Mild resentment at obvious team design" Uraraka looked at Kurose.
"She did do that on purpose" Iida adjusted his glasses.
"Likely" Midoriya said "My status is nervous. No major pain. Shoulder two. Fingers one. Wanting to overexplain" Ren nodded.
"Good report" Midoriya flushed. Uraraka said "My status is nervous but ready. Also curious if this counts as weirdly advanced friendship" Iida looked at her.
"I am uncertain friendship has formal levels" Ren said "Kurose could create them" All four looked toward Kurose. She did not look up.
"No" Uraraka whispered "She heard" Aizawa called from the center.
"Team One. Start position" The unstable corridor was built from movable panels and taped hazard zones. One rescue dummy lay behind a low barrier near the far end. Red tape marked collapse risk. Yellow tape marked unknown footing. Blue tape marked safe communication points. The lights had been dimmed. A speaker played low static and distant crowd noise, just enough to make thinking annoying. Aizawa stood outside the corridor. The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
"Constraint. Akiyama cannot enter red zones. Midoriya cannot use more than low-output movement. Uraraka cannot make the civilian weightless until contact is secure. Iida cannot sprint. You have two minutes to decide first action. Five minutes to execute" Iida's jaw tightened at cannot sprint. Ren noticed. Midoriya noticed. Uraraka noticed. Iida noticed them noticing and breathed.
"Status" Ren asked Iida's voice was controlled.
"Yellow. Frustration. No engine activation. Constraint accepted" Midoriya looked like he wanted to celebrate and decided wisely not to. Aizawa said "Begin" The corridor waited. Ren looked first. Not the dummy. The floor. Panels angled too cleanly. Red zone too obvious. Yellow zone too wide. Blue points placed at awkward distances. The civilian was visible, which meant the trap was probably not the civilian but the route. Uraraka whispered "Visible victim pulls us forward" Ren glanced at her. She gave a small shrug.
"Gunhead made me do hostage path checks" Good. Midoriya crouched slightly.
"Low output can scout safe footing if I stay blue to yellow edge" Iida said "I can coordinate evacuation path and carry if route is confirmed" Ren looked at him.
"Without sprinting" Iida's mouth tightened.
"Yes. Without sprinting" Ren nodded. The word carry had weight with him. Maybe all of them had words like that now. He looked at the corridor again. One useful sentence. Compression.
"Hold position. Confirm floor. Do not touch civilian until exit route is stable" Midoriya nodded immediately. Uraraka repeated "Confirm floor before contact" Iida said "I will mark return path" Aizawa's eyes narrowed slightly. Not disapproval. Recording. Midoriya moved first. Small green flickers ran along his legs. Less than before. He stepped into the first blue point, then crouched and tested the edge of the yellow tape without entering red.
He tapped one panel with his knuckles, stopped when it shifted, and looked back.
"Panel loose" Uraraka moved to the side, not forward, and used a training pole to pull a light obstacle away from the marked return path. Iida placed markers along the safe route, every motion controlled enough to look painful. Ren remained outside the red zone. The body did not like that. The dummy lay beyond the red line. Visible. Reachable if he ignored the tape. Not reachable if he followed the rules. His left palm warmed. Not Scar Tension. Not yet. He reported.
"Scar heat mild left palm. Trigger visible rescue beyond restriction. No activation" Recovery Girl's voice cut across the room.
"Good report. Hands open" Ren opened his hand. Midoriya's head turned. Concern. Ren shook his head once. Not now. Midoriya turned back. Good. Uraraka reached the dummy first, but did not touch.
"Contact point secure?" Midoriya tested the floor.
"Left side stable. Right side shifts" Iida moved closer at walking speed, jaw tight, and placed his body at the edge of the safe zone without crossing.
"I can brace from here" Ren saw it. If Iida leaned too far, he could pull the dummy. If the floor shifted, he would catch. If he used engines, he would break the constraint. Ren said "Iida, name the want" Iida froze. Then his eyes closed for one second.
"I want to move faster because slow feels like neglect" The corridor went quiet. Uraraka's face softened. Midoriya swallowed. Ren said "Then move slow correctly" Iida opened his eyes.
"Yes" He braced. Uraraka touched the dummy only after Midoriya confirmed footing. She did not make it fully weightless at first. She reduced load gradually. Smart. The dummy lifted enough for Iida to guide it without sprinting. Midoriya stabilized the loose panel with his shoulder at low output. Ren stayed at the blue communication point and gave compressed route calls.
"Left foot blue""Pause""Panel shift""Return path clear" His body wanted more. The want was a dog behind a fence. Not evil. Not safe loose. They reached the start line with thirty seconds left. Aizawa called "End" The lights rose. Uraraka exhaled hard. Midoriya sat down on the floor without noticing, then looked offended by gravity. Iida remained standing, breathing through his nose. Ren's palm cooled. Kurose approached with clipboard.
"Debrief. Akiyama""Constraint held. Scar heat mild. Want to enter red zone managed through communication role. Useful but uncomfortable""Midoriya""I used low output. I wanted to move faster when Ren reported heat because I thought he might be in trouble. I stayed on task" Recovery Girl grunted.
"Noted positively" Midoriya lit up, then tried not to. Progress.
"Uraraka""I wanted to make the civilian weightless immediately because it felt kinder. Gradual release was safer""Good""Iida" Iida looked at the dummy.
"I wanted speed to prove care. Moving slowly felt disrespectful to the injured. It was not" Silence. Aizawa's eyes moved to him. Kurose wrote.
"Good" This time, Iida accepted the word like a splint. The second team began while Team One rested. Ren sat beside Uraraka on the observation bench. Midoriya sat on his other side with his hands open on his knees as if someone had told him that open hands prevented apologizing. Iida stood at the end of the bench until Aizawa said "Sit" without looking at him. Iida sat. Across the room, Team Two entered a mock negotiation corridor. Constraint cards appeared on the board.
Shinso cannot use Brainwashing unless target speaks first and Kurose authorizes. Todoroki cannot create full-wall ice. Yaoyorozu cannot create more than three objects. Bakugo cannot use explosions above mobility level two. Bakugo stared at the card.
"What the hell is mobility level two?" Aizawa said "Less than property damage""That's not a level""It is today" Shinso whispered "Shared floor discipline is beautiful" Bakugo snapped "Say that again" Shinso looked at Kurose.
"May I?"
"No""Tragedy" The scenario started. A villain dummy with speaker projection stood behind a barrier. A civilian dummy was tied to a chair in the center. The team had to cross, distract, secure, and extract without triggering red-zone pressure plates. Yaoyorozu immediately started mapping object options aloud. Todoroki scanned floor and angles. Bakugo bounced on his heels like a grenade placed in a waiting room. Shinso stood very still. Too still. Ren noticed. Aizawa noticed faster.
"Shinso. Report" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Yellow. Wanting villain projection to speak so my role becomes obvious. Frustrated. Body stillness increasing""Move one foot" Shinso moved one foot. Bakugo looked at him.
"What, you need a permission slip to walk?" Shinso's face went blank. Todoroki looked at Bakugo.
"Unhelpful" Bakugo bristled.
"You wanna start?" Yaoyorozu raised her voice.
"Stop" Everyone looked at her. Including Bakugo. She did not flinch.
"We have three objects, restricted output, and one civilian. If we spend the first thirty seconds proving personalities, we fail" Ren saw Bakugo's face change. Not soften. Adjust. Yaoyorozu created a low mirror, a weighted line, and a small shield. Three objects. No more. Todoroki used a narrow ice strip to test floor pressure. Bakugo used a small blast to cross a gap without touching the pressure plate, angry enough to be precise. Shinso moved when the villain projection started taunting.
"Little heroes. Which of you wants to be first?" Shinso inhaled. Then waited. The projection continued "No answer?" Kurose said "Authorized" Shinso's voice changed.
"Look at me" The projection froze by simulation trigger. Shinso's shoulders lowered. Too much relief. Aizawa's voice cut in.
"Report" Shinso gritted his teeth.
"Relief because first answer worked. Risk of relying on it""Second answer" Shinso moved forward physically, took the weighted line from Yaoyorozu, and secured the civilian dummy's chair instead of speaking again. Good. Bakugo blasted one obstacle aside at the allowed level and looked personally offended by compliance. Todoroki created a thin ice guard around the dummy's legs without immobilizing the extraction path. Yaoyorozu coordinated the route in three sentences, each shorter than the last.
They completed the scenario with less grace than Team One, but more raw force. Aizawa called "End" Bakugo immediately pointed at Shinso.
"You freeze up before you move" Shinso's mouth tightened. Aizawa said "Accurate. Unhelpful framing" Bakugo's eyes snapped to him.
"What?" Aizawa looked bored.
"If you can only identify the flaw after the exercise, congratulations. You are a spectator with volume" Kirishima, watching from the side, whispered "Brutal" Kurose turned to Shinso.
"Report" Shinso's voice was clipped.
"I wanted the projection to speak because then I knew what I was for. When it did not, I froze. When Brainwashing worked, I relaxed too much. Second answer was taking the line" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Bakugo looked annoyed that the report had not become a fight. Yaoyorozu said "Your second answer stabilized the extraction" Shinso blinked. Then looked away.
"Useful information" Todoroki said "You moved after not knowing" Shinso stared at him.
"That is not a normal compliment" Todoroki considered.
"I am told I need practice" Bakugo scoffed.
"Everyone here needs practice" Aizawa said "Including you" Bakugo's grin returned.
"Obviously" Ren watched Bakugo for a long second. Interesting. Bakugo did not deny needing practice. He denied needing humility in a way that still allowed improvement if the world survived him. Dangerous. Useful. Both. The third exercise mixed the teams further. Ren expected Kurose to pair him with Todoroki or Iida. Instead, she called "Akiyama. Bakugo. Yaoyorozu. Shinso" The room became still. Bakugo looked delighted. Shinso looked at the ceiling as if asking a god he did not believe in why.
Yaoyorozu stood with the quiet expression of someone accepting a tactical disaster as an educational opportunity. Ren reported to no one in particular.
"Yellow. Anticipated conflict. No heat" Bakugo laughed once.
"At least you're honest" Ren looked at him.
"At least you are loud" Kurose said "Akiyama" Ren stopped. Bakugo's grin widened.
"Ha" Aizawa said "Bakugo" The grin vanished. The scenario was simpler. That made Ren more suspicious. A mock street. One civilian dummy. One unstable object suspended above the route. One villain marker that could move once when triggered. Objective: extract civilian and prevent falling hazard. Constraint: Bakugo limited to directional blasts only. Ren cannot cross red line. Shinso cannot Brainwash teammate or villain marker unless spoken trigger occurs. Yaoyorozu has two creations.
Ren looked at the suspended object. Falling hazard. Of course. His left forearm warmed immediately.
"Scar heat left forearm. Visual trigger. No activation" Recovery Girl's chair creaked.
"Logged. Continue only if stable""Stable" Bakugo glanced at him. Not mockery this time. Assessment. The scenario began. The hazard swayed. A speaker played crowd noise. The civilian dummy lay within reach of Bakugo and Yaoyorozu, not Ren. Ren stayed behind the red line. Again. Always. Bakugo moved first. Too fast but within constraint, crossing the safe line with a directional blast and landing near the dummy. Yaoyorozu created a brace pole and a wedge. Shinso moved toward a side angle, eyes on the villain marker.
Ren looked at the suspended hazard. Not falling yet. Route wrong. If they pulled the civilian straight back, the hazard would drop across the exit. If Bakugo blasted upward, debris scatter risk. If Yaoyorozu braced from below, she had one object left and not enough angle. If Shinso waited for the villain marker to speak, useless. One useful sentence.
"Do not pull straight. Rotate civilian left. Brace hazard from side. Bakugo, blast the swing, not the weight" Bakugo snapped "Don't order me" The hazard dropped one inch. Ren's forearm burned. He opened his hand. Shinso shouted "He is right" Bakugo's eyes flashed.
"Shut up brainwash" Yaoyorozu said "Bakugo, the swing vector is the threat" That landed. Not because Ren said it. Because Yaoyorozu translated it into physics and urgency without ego. Bakugo blasted sideways, not up. The suspended object swung away from the exit instead of dropping across it. Yaoyorozu wedged the brace pole into the side support. Shinso moved without waiting for a trigger and used his body to block the villain marker's path, then reported through clenched teeth.
"Second answer physical obstruction" Ren stayed behind the red line and called "Left rotation now" Bakugo grabbed the dummy and snarled as if rescue offended him. Yaoyorozu guided the movement. The hazard slipped. Ren's body surged. Not thought. Body. Forward. His right foot touched the red line. Not across. On. Kurose's voice cut through.
"Status" Ren froze. The hazard dropped another inch. Bakugo looked back. For one second, the old trap opened. Wrong priority. Move. Prove. Hold. His scars warmed under the sleeve. No. Anchor is not holding until breaking. Ren forced his foot back.
"Yellow-red. Urge to cross. No activation. Redirecting to command" Recovery Girl said "Good" Bakugo shouted "Less talking!" Ren snapped "Then move left now!" Bakugo moved. Not because he obeyed. Because the order matched the field. The team cleared the dummy as the suspended object dropped, hit the brace, slid, and landed in the empty zone instead of the exit path. Aizawa called "End" Ren's forearm cooled slowly. Bakugo set the dummy down with a glare.
"You've got a damn mouth for someone behind a line" Ren met his eyes.
"You have good field response when ego stops blocking your ears" The room went silent. Kirishima whispered "Oh no" Bakugo's smile sharpened.
"You wanna test that?"
"No" That stopped him. Ren continued "That would be proving ego is still in the route" Shinso made a small strangled sound. Yaoyorozu looked down at her clipboard very quickly. Aizawa's scarf shifted. Not moving. Warning. Bakugo stared at Ren. Then laughed. Short. Sharp. Not friendly. Not hostile enough to be simple.
"Damn. General Studies got teeth" Ren said "You noticed after the exercise. Spectator with volume" Kirishima actually choked. Aizawa closed his eyes as if asking for strength. Kurose said "Akiyama. Bakugo. Both of you will now report one useful thing the other did" Bakugo looked betrayed by the universe. Ren inhaled. He had done this to himself. Fair.
"Bakugo adjusted blast angle immediately once the vector was clarified. He did not overblast despite visible frustration" Kurose nodded.
"Bakugo" Bakugo's jaw worked. No one moved. Finally, he said "Scar boy saw the drop path and didn't jump the line" Recovery Girl said "Name" Bakugo's eyes flicked to her. Then to Ren. He scowled.
"Akiyama saw the drop path and didn't jump the line" Kurose wrote.
"Good" Everyone hated it appropriately. Training continued. By the end of the block, no one had fought, no one had crossed a prohibited line, no one had used a Quirk beyond constraints, and almost everyone looked as if they had been personally insulted by cooperation. Aizawa declared this acceptable. Kurose declared it a start. Recovery Girl declared Ren medically annoying but stable. Thirteen declared the mixed teams promising. Cementoss declared compression improved.
Bakugo declared nothing, then told Kirishima "They're not dead weight" at a volume that suggested he had not meant Ren to hear. Ren heard. Shinso heard. Everyone heard. Kirishima smiled like this was a victory parade. Ren did not comment. That was a heroic act. After the session, students filtered out in uneven clusters. The white line remained on the floor, scuffed by shoes from both sides. Ren stood looking at it. Shinso stopped beside him.
"We crossed""Yes""Floor was the same""Yes""Annoying""Yes" Midoriya approached with Uraraka and Iida. Todoroki followed at a distance that had become his version of joining. Midoriya looked at the line.
"It felt bigger before crossing" Iida nodded.
"Most institutional barriers do" Uraraka tilted her head.
"That sounded like Kurose" Iida looked faintly alarmed.
"Oh" Todoroki said "It happens" Shinso muttered "Infection confirmed" Ren looked at them. Hero Course. Cross-Course. Different doors. Same floor. Not same path. Not same access. But for one hour, under constraints, they had moved in the same scenario without pretending the line did not exist. That mattered. Not enough. Enough. Aizawa passed behind them.
"Stop looking at tape like it will solve your lives" Everyone straightened. Kurose, following him, said "It will be removed before tomorrow" Ren looked at the line again. Then at Shinso. Shinso said "Hallway continues" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Midoriya smiled faintly.
"Real enough to matter?" Ren looked at him.
"Narrow enough to hurt" Iida added quietly "Wide enough to walk" The sentence surprised them all. Iida most of all. Todoroki looked at him.
"Good" Iida closed his eyes.
"The word" Uraraka smiled.
"It got you too" For once, no one argued. That evening, Ren wrote under normal notebook conditions. Mixed training. Then: The floor was the same after crossing. Then: A line can be real without being permanent. He paused. Then added: I stayed behind the red line and still changed where the hazard fell. The sentence stayed. He did not underline it. It did not need proof. Outside his room, Hana called dinner. Daichi was arguing with Shinso about whether Bentaro counted as field-tested or emotionally overused.
Shinso was losing because he had not yet learned that Daichi's most absurd arguments were load-bearing family structures. Ren placed the notebook down. His left forearm was cool. His hands were open. Behind a line, he had acted. Across a line, they had met. Not transfer. Not victory. A first shared floor. For tonight, that was enough structure to stand on.
